    Giovanni Boccaccio
    Writer Italy Born
Boccaccio was born in 1313, either in Florence or Certaldo (a town in Florentine territory). His father, a prosperous merchant banker with the Compagnia dei Bardi, moved to Naples in 1327 as general manager of the bank's Neapolitan branch, taking the adolescent Boccaccio with him. He entertained notions of his son following in his footsteps, and apprenticed him to the trade, but when he realised that Boccaccio had no vocation for banking he arranged for him to study canon law. This was equally unsuccessful, and after a few years Boccaccio gave up his legal studies and devoted his time to literature and scholarship. At this period Naples, under King Robert of Anjou, was one of the major intellectual and cultural centres in Europe. To judge from references in his Latin epistles, Boccaccio considered his sojourn in Naples as the happiest period in his life.

Boccaccio, detail of a fresco by Andrea del Castagno; in the Cenacolo di Sant' Apollonia, Florence SCALA/Art Resource, New York City (b. 1313, Paris, Fr.d. Dec. 21, 1375, Certaldo, Tuscany [Italy]), Italian poet and scholar, best remembered as the author of the earthy tales in the Decameron . With Petrarch he laid the foundations for the humanism of the Renaissance and raised vernacular literature to the level and status of the classics of antiquity.
    Youth.
Boccaccio was the son of a Tuscan merchant, Boccaccio di Chellino (called Boccaccino), and a mother who was probably French. He passed his early childhood rather unhappily in Florence. His father had no sympathy for Boccaccio's literary inclinations and sent him, not later than 1328, to Naples to learn business, probably in an office of the Bardi, who dominated the court of Naples by means of their loans. In this milieu Boccaccio experienced the aristocracy of the commercial world as well as all that survived of the splendours of courtly chivalry and feudalism. He also studied canon law and mixed with the learned men of the court and the friends and admirers of Petrarch, through whom he came to know the work of Petrarch himself. These years in Naples, moreover, were the years of Boccaccio's love for

    Giovanni Boccaccio
Boccaccio, Giovanni (1313-75), Italian writer and humanist, born into a family of a Florentine merchant. His youth he spent in Naples, where be began his literary studies and wrote his first works. In 1340 he returned to Florence. Municipality of Florence employed him for different diplomatic missions. His main literary work is Decameron. The Story of Nastagio degli Onesti is a novella from Decameron, it tells the story of the young Nastagio from Ravenna, who cunningly uses a horrific event in order to persuade his beloved to marry him.
See: The Story of Nastagio degli Onesti in 4 frescos by Botticelli:
    1. The Encounter with the Damned in the Pine Forest.
Nastagio, rejected by the lady he admires, retires in the pine forest. There he suddenly comes upon a knight on horseback who is hunting a naked woman with his hounds. Nastagio seizes a branch in order to protect the defenseless woman.
    2. The Infernal Hunt. Nastagio watches with dismay as the knight tears out the woman's heart and entrails and feeds them to his dogs. Then the armed rider is once again hounding his victim along the shores of the ocean. The chase is hell's punishment for the hunter, whose despairing love caused him to commit suicide, and for the naked woman, who was cruel to her lover; it is a punishment that will be repeated eternally.
    3. The Banquet in the Pine Forest.

    Boccaccio, Giovanni
The historical importance of Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-75) as a literary theorist and critic lies not so much in the originality of his thinking as in his civic-spirited mediation between Dantean (scholastic) and Petrarchan (proto-humanist) cultures.
Born at Certaldo, Boccaccio lived in Florence until the age of 13, when he joined his father at the Florentine merchant colony at Naples. There he trained as an apprentice merchant before switching to the study of canon law at the Neapolitan Studio. Returning to Florence in 1341, he became a vigorous supporter of the republican regime and served during the next thirty years as, inter alia, ambassador to emperor and pope, overseer of mercenary troops, and advisor to the bishop of Florence. He wrote his Decameron immediately after the catastrophic Black Death of 1348. By the time he first met Petrarch (1350), he was the undisputed leader of Florentine literary culture. Under Petrarch's influence, he turned increasingly away from vernacular fiction in favor of Latin encyclopedism. He took lessons in Greek, solicited translations from Greek texts, and in 1360 successfully worked to establish at Florence the first chair of Greek in non-Byzantine Europe. In 1373 the citizens of Florence chose him to give the world's first

OPERE CONSULTABILI GRATUITAMENTE BIBLIOTECA
