Haiku brings you in touch with your true self and nature.
Basho, the 17-th century originator of haiku, has been attributed with defining haiku as: "What is happening in this place at this moment." Haiku gets you in touch with your true inner self and its relation to the natural world that surrounds us. Many of the 185 authors of the over 800 haiku in Haiku Moment (now in its 3rd printing) and many readers like you tell me they have taken great pleasure from the collection and return to it again and again for inspiration. As examples: "reading her letter/ new snow/ on the branches" Nick Avis. "middle of the highway/ with bells on/ our old dog" Carol Montgomery. "twilight deepens/ the wordless things/ I know" Francine Porad. Table of Poems from

But that is not the only aspect of the poetry worth mentioning. Jacqueline Turner, Marianne Bluger and Anne F. Walker walk a fine line between writing as women and being read solely as female authors. Each poet keeps her balance. gouged to the bed. The bed is holding her in its gouge. She is unable to ungouge herself. She looks at the clock, knows, it is time to get up. And yet. This gaping gouge. Caught in the fold

Briefly, rengaccio is a five-link poem about politically correct, foot-in-mouth, or embarrassing situations; rengatto is a nine-link poem with the mention of a cat therein; rendango consists of seven links that mentions a dance. Instructions on how to write each of these forms are included here. Altogether, these frisky poems frequently left me laughing out loud, and do so every time I go back to this delightful collection. Blessed be! cur*rent: linked haiku by Marlene Mountain and Francine Porad. Vandana Press, 6944 SE 33 rd In addition to the seven one-line, 36-link poems between Marlene Mountain and Francine Porad, the book, cur*rent opens with a Foreword by Randy Brooks followed by a wittily composed essay on the work of Marlene Mountain in the form of an acrostic interview by Jim Kacian spelling out the name of her projected book - from the mountain. As always there is lots to learn from Marlene's lips. The heart of the book is, however, the seven collaborative works done between Francine Porad and Marlene Mountain beginning in March, 1990, and ending in August, 1998. In the beginning, the poems were written by mail so the slower pace allows a change of seasonal references to mark and advance the images. Later, the poems were done in 3 - 5 days by email which quickens the action considerably.

THE REMARKABLE TANKA
by Geraldine C. Little

Entries for this tanka anthology arrived during the Christmas season. On every side getting and spending raged madly. How wonderful, I thought, that in the midst of all this, I have the privilege of reading 788 poems, a marvelous antidote to the forces of materiality. they brought me back to what really matters, to the delights of the word and spirit. My strongest regret is that I was limited to choosing only thirty-one poems! The entries given to me were anonymous. It was delightful, then, when I was given the names of those chosen, to see that some poems came from the Netherlands, from England, India, Canada, as well as all over the United States. This short form is indeed becoming one which is practiced internationally. What one strongly felt is that poets, (myself included!) would be rewarded by reading and re-reading all one can find on the subject of tanka. Read Sanford Goldstein, Hiro Sato, Jane Reichhold's Introduction to Wind Five Folded , Jane Hirshfield's fine work. Tanka traditionally embodied the delights and tragedies of love. As evidenced by these 788 poems, the subject matter now embraced is much wider than that. Whether that is a good thing or otherwise, is open to question, or so it seems to me. Whether the wider subject matter weakens or enhances the "form" is worth debating.

Tanka-An Ancient Style of Poetry that Speaks to the Modern Soul Tanka is the modern name of a form of Japanese verse that dates back over twelve centuries. Older than haiku, tanka differs from haiku in both its form (31 syllables) and its style of expression. In Japan, tanka has long been considered the most important form of Japanese poetry. In recent decades, not only have western readers begun to discover Japanese-language tanka through originals and translations, but western poets have begun to explore the power of the tanka form in their own languages.

      by Susan Helwig
Seraphim Editions 2001. Susan Helwig's first collection starts with the vigour and probing of youth and ends with the lassitude of middle age. Part 1, "The Garden", is about making poetry and other art forms. "First and Best Morning" is presented as unpunctuated run-on prose cluttered with ampersands, a formlessness that serves as a metaphor for the subject green youth. Like an adolescent raising her voice at the end of every statement, Helwig occasionally uses the interrogative mode "seeing you, is it like angels / who sing to those who never run out of hope?" ("Breakfast at the Midcity") Part II, "Butter, No Butter," reveals the poet's parents. Helwig co-opts the persona of Leo Montag and the story-telling mode of Ursula Hegi in Stones from the Sea (1997) to penetrate the compassionate psyche of her father. Her father's death gives her greater access to her mother. Her narrative techniques range from the Magic Realism of "The Wesch Girls" to the allusive threnody of "Remains of the Night." In the latter poem the reader will recognize the theme of perceived duty to others opposed to one's duty to oneself so central to Ishiguro's novel The Remains of the Day . A saccharine reflection on singing for loved ones, the poem "In Concert" contains the title of the book, and of Part III. It is placed, not coincidentally, in the midst of a catalogue of 'loved ones.' Part IV, "So Far From Home," travels through Europe, with recollections of Ontario. The best poems contain narrative and descriptive content as framework for the more esoteric musings. The "Driver," as
