Writer's Bloch
A Brief Tribute To 'the Author Of Psycho'
by Leigh Blackmore
Appeared in Tabula Rasa#5
Robert Bloch once dedicated a book to close friend and fellow writer Fritz Leiber with the words "When he writes of graves, they always yawn but his readers never do". The same could be said of Bloch himself. I never had the good fortune to meet Robert Bloch in person. Much to my regret, I missed Cinecon, the Australian convention at which he was Guest of Honour in 1981. When I visited the US in 1990 for the Lovecraft Centennial Conference, I had hoped Bloch would be present, but on writing to him he advised he had just attended a Lovecraft-related convention elsewhere and would not be going to Providence. Plans to meet up with him in his home-town of Los Angeles on the return leg of my trip also didn't work out, due to other commitments which took him out of town at the only time I could be there. While I couldn't meet him in person, at the John Hay Library in Providence I was delighted to see for the first time a display of some of Bloch's original art, executed when he was about 16 in homage to the stories and characters of H.P Lovecraft. Bloch began by wanting to be an artist, only turning to fiction when Lovecraft encouraged him to do so.

The Unofficial Robert Bloch Homepage
Welcome to the first website to deal exclusively with the life and works of Robert Bloch. Robert Bloch wrote more than 200 stories (mostly fantasy, horror, and science fiction, but also mystery and crime), as well as 22 novels and a large number of non-fiction articles. He was also very active in Hollywood, penning a large number of teleplays and screenplays. He is best known to the general public for his novel "Psycho," which became the basis for Alfred Hitchcock's film of the same name . Bloch is regarded as one of the seminal authors of twentieth century fantastic literature, a successor to Poe and Lovecraft (by way of James M. Cain), but with a voice entirely his own. While comfortable with writing about the exploits of ghouls, serial killers, and monsters of all varieties, Bloch was also one of the most pleasant and generous members of the writing community. A fan himself, he always replied to the letters of his fans, answering their questions and encouraging their talents. This site is designed to give the both the casual reader and the scholar of fantastic literature a general introduction to Robert Bloch and his works. The goals of this site are to encourage the reading and the study of the works of Robert Bloch, and to get Bloch's works back in print (and keep them there).

The letters, written to Vernon Shea and Bruce Walker, are of a personal nature, although they contain a good deal of information on the science fiction writing community of the time, particularly the writings of Harlan Ellison, Phillip Jose Farmer, H. P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, and other of Bloch's works. Included is a short screenplay by Vernon Shea and Bloch's critique. The late, great Robert Bloch (author of Psycho ) was a master of macabre humor: he was fond of clever, grisly one-liners, often used as twist endings.
