Blanchot , Maurice, trans. Lydia Davis, Barrytown , New York: Station Hill Press, 1981) The Gaze of Orpheus When Orpheus descends to Eurydice, art is the power that causes the night to open. Because of the power of art, the night welcomes him; it becomes the welcoming intimacy, the understanding and the harmony of the first night. But Orpheus has gone down to Eurydice: for him, Eurydice is the limit of what art can attain; concealed behind a name and covered by a veil, she is the profoundly dark point towards which art, desire, death, and the night all seem to lead. She is the instant in which the essence of the night approaches as the other night. Yet Orpheus’ work does not consist of securing the approach of this “point” by descending into the depths. His work is to bring it back into the daylight and in the daylight give it form, figure and reality. Orpheus can do anything except look this “point” in the face, look at the center of the night in the night. He can descend to it, he can draw it to him— an-even stronger power — and he can draw it upwards, but only by keeping his back turned to it. This turning away is the only way he can approach it: this is the meaning of the concealment revealed in the night. But in the impulse of his migration Orpheus forgets the work he has to accomplish, and he has to forget it, because the ultimate requirement of his impulse is not that there should be a work, but that someone should stand and face this “point” and grasp its essence where this essence appears, where it is essential and essentially appearance: in the heart of the night.

Maurice Blanchot
- En introduksjon
Av Espen Haakestad og Ole Fjereide
RED. ANM:
Denne artikkelen sto på trykk i Bøygen 1-2/2002.
Maurice Blanchot døde 20. feb. 2003.

Maurice Blanchot
Quotations
The Journal is not essentially a confession, a story about oneself. It is a Memorial. What does the writer have to remember? Himself, who he is when he is not writing, when he is living his daily life, when he is alive and real, and not dying and without truth. There is between sleep and us something like a pact, a treaty with no secret clauses, and according to this convention it is agreed that, far from being a dangerous, bewitching force, sleep will become domesticated and serve as an instrument of our power to act. We surrender to sleep, but in the way that the master entrusts himself to the slave who serves him. A writer who writes, "I am alone" . . . can be considered rather comical. It is comical for a man to recognize his solitude by addressing a reader and by using methods that prevent the individual from being alone. The word alone is just as general as the word bread. To pronounce it is to summon to oneself the presence of everything the word excludes. Lovers of painting and lovers of music are people who openly display their preference like a delectable ailment that isolates them and makes them proud.

Maurice Blanchot
Maurice Blanchot (born in 1907) remains one of the most mysterious figures of contemporary literature. No interview, no biographical sketch, not even a photograph has ever been published. A Conservative journalist and activist in the 1930s, he renounced politics when he began his fecund career as a novelist and literary critic. His sole public appearance since then was in support of young Left during the events of May 1968. Yet for fifty years he has been the most consistent champion of modern literature and its tradition in French letters.

Maurice Blanchot
edited by George Quasha
translated by Paul Auster, Lydia Davis, and Robert Lamberton
Six books in one, this is the first and only collection of Maurice Blanchot's celebrated fiction and critical/philosophical writing. Regarded both on the European continent and in America as one of the truly great authors of French Post-Modernism, Blanchot's reputation and readership in the English has already established him as a modern classic. A Blanchot Reader brings together a substantial collection of critical and philosophical writings ( The Gaze of Orpheus ) and the only edition in print in English of his major works of fiction ( Thomas the Obscure Death Sentence Vicious Circles The Madness of the Day When the Time Comes and the one who was standing apart form me ). General reader and student alike will seek out these essential works by the writer Susan Sontag calls "an unimpeachably major voice in modern French literature."
