2001-07-16 - 8:45 p.m. In spite of getting spayed just this past Friday, the puppy's presently bouncing around like a giant tribble on crack. Lord, I wish I had her energy. Of course, she got more sleep last night than I did, too. My candle burns... The BYM is bringing home milk and scallions, and I will boil penne pasta and stir together an easy tomato-and-cream sauce for our dinner, and then, I think, to bed, if I'm wise. If I succumb to foolishness (as is my wont), I might stay up and concoct something for this month's Ampersand . So many possible ways to approach the theme... "But I fear that to fall in love with you / is to fall from a great and gruesome height. . . "
    - Dar Williams, "Iowa"
"Some things look hard and then they're not / Like getting on a tightrope and falling off. . ."
"I love myself / I want you to love me
When I feel down / I want you above me..."
    - The Divinyls, "I Touch Myself"

Jorge Carrera Andrade
The Editors of The Drunken Boat are pleased to present an extensive introduction to the well-known Ecuadorian poet, Jorge Carrera Andrade. This issue contains a selection of Andrade's poetry translated from the Spanish by Steven Ford Brown. by Steven Ford Brown
I cannot remember on another occasion finding a place so clear and free of the torment of the spirit that has now become our daily bread. The images of Jorge Carrera Andrade are so extraordinarily clear, so connected to the primitive I imagine I am... participating in a vision already lost to the world. It is a place melancholy but grand.
— William Carlos Williams
Generally forgotten by American literary critics and anthologists, Ecuadorian Jorge Carrera Andrade (1902-1978) has long been considered by Latin America critics to be one of their most important poets. A country the size of Nevada, Ecuador is bordered by the dense rainforest of the Amazon on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. The country interior includes both lush farmland and the otherworldly volcanic landscapes and snow-capped mountains of the Andes. It's a country of startling contrasts. This is where Jorge Carrera Andrade grew up.

III. Religion and the American Revolution
R eligion played a major role in the American Revolution by offering a moral sanction for opposition to the Britishan assurance to the average American that revolution was justified in the sight of God. As a recent scholar has observed, "by turning colonial resistance into a righteous cause, and by crying the message to all ranks in all parts of the colonies, ministers did the work of secular radicalism and did it better." Ministers served the American cause in many capacities during the Revolution: as military chaplains, as penmen for committees of correspondence, and as members of state legislatures, constitutional conventions and the national Congress. Some even took up arms, leading Continental troops in battle. The Revolution split some denominations, notably the Church of England, whose ministers were bound by oath to support the King, and the Quakers, who were traditionally pacifists. Religious practice suffered in certain places because of the absence of ministers and the destruction of churches, but in other areas, religion flourished.

Allen Tate's Life and Career David Havird T ATE was born John Orley Allen Tate near Winchester, Kentucky, the son of John Orley Tate, a businessman, and Eleanor Parke Custis Varnell. During Tate's childhood the business interests of his father-lumber, land sales, and stocks-forced the family to move as often as three times a year. As Tate later recalled, "we might as well have been living, and I been born, in a tavern at a crossroads." By 1911 his father's business ventures and his parents' marriage had failed. The youngest of three boys by almost ten years, Tate found himself in "perpetual motion" with his mother, a native Virginian whose family seat in Fairfax County later became the "Pleasant Hill" of Tate's only novel, The Fathers From 1916 to 1917 Tate studied the violin at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. As he implies in his late poem "The Buried Lake" (1953), his failure to fulfill his musical ambitions signaled "the death of youth." In 1918 he enrolled at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. During the fall semester of his senior year (1921), at the invitation of Donald Davidson, a member of the English faculty, Tate began attending the informal meetings of the group of men, which also included his sometime professor John Crowe Ransom, that launched the Fugitive in 1922. Tate thus became a founding editor of the poetry journal whose three-year run heralded the literary renascence of the South.
