Poet, essayist, journalist, preservationist, Betjeman was knighted in 1969 and in 1972 he became Poet Laureate of England, although he was always self-deprecating and once described himself as 'a hack'.
His father was a manufacturer of Dutch extraction but as a schoolboy during the First World War, Betjeman suffered considerably because other children thought his name was German. He also suffered as a freshman at Oxford. He felt that people despised him because his father was 'in trade', and because although he had been at a quite respectable public school, Marlborough, he must be inferior to fellow students who had been to schools of higher social standing such as Eton, Harrow and Winchester. One of Betjeman's Oxford friends who shared his feelings, believing his school also to be socially inferior, was the novelist Evelyn Waugh . However, they both eventually moved into circles which enabled them to live the pleasure-seeking extravagant Oxford life described in Waugh's 'Brideshead Revisited', and neither of them took their academic work very seriously. Later Betjeman felt more confident about his social position, having married the daughter of an admittedly disapproving Field Marshal and acquired a mistress from a ducal family. He was also strong enough in his personal beliefs not to allow Waugh to persuade him to follow him into the Roman Catholic Church.

BETJEMAN'S CORNWALL BETJEMAN, John. Complete autograph draft of the spoken commentary for Betjeman's television programme 'One Man's County' broadcast on BBC 1 in 15 foolscap pages, numbered 1-3, 3-14, written in ball-point pen on ruled paper, heavily revised, in very good condition. 'John Betjeman first fell in love with Cornwall during his childhood holidays and continued to return to it yearly until his death ... It has inspired some of his best poems and most evocative prose. Many other places in Britain and Ireland ... have been celebrated by him, but the Cornish cliffs and beaches, modest churches and formidable sea have the power to stir him which only first love possesses' (prefatory note to Betjeman's Cornwall, 1984, where this script was first published).
'One Man's County' draws together all these aspects of Cornwall – the moorland granite landscape, the traces of early man, the coming of Christianity, the churches and the 'Cornish miracle of carving' at St. Mary Magdelene in Launceston, the Methodists, the mines and quarries, granite and slate, Cornish engineers, and Brunel's great railway bridge. The programme ends with reflections on the damage caused by pyramids of white silica waste from the china clay industry, and by tourism.
Betjeman made this programme for BBC Documentaries at Bristol (John Boorman was then director of the unit). He will first have collaborated with the BBC in choosing which sites to film in Cornwall, and then will have written the commentary while watching the roughly-edited film on a screen editor, writing to footage. This requires a particular talent (Auden's The Night Mail is the best-known example), and Betjeman writes a rhythmical prose set out as it is to be read:

Betjeman, John The Cottage Hospital
On-Line Text Genre Poem Keywords Abandonment Body Self-Image Death and Dying Disease and Health ... Time Summary On a summer afternoon, the poet lies in a garden under a mulberry tree. The air is "swimming with insects" and children are playing in the street. He notices a housefly being caught in a spider's web. The spider poisons and kills the fly, then wraps it in "lithe elastic," but everything else in the garden remains the same. Life goes on as usual. The poet then turns his attention to the future. One day in some cottage hospital he, too, will approach the end of his life. Will he groan in his bed and gasp for breath, while no one notices? [36 lines] Commentary This poem is in essence a single leap of the imagination. The first 24 lines accurately and minutely describe the scene in the garden. After a stanza break, the final 12 lines are made up of a series of questions about the poet's own death. Where will I be when the time comes? Will I be in pain? Will I gasp for breath?

    http://www.ourcivilisation.com/smartboard/shop/brookej/btjmn/chap5.htm
John Betjeman by Jocelyn Brooke Chapter V It has been suggested in an earlier section of this essay that the hard and fast distinction between 'light' and 'serious' verse is a comparatively modern phenomenon, scarcely to be encountered, in the sense in which we understand it, before the beginning of the nineteenth century. When we speak of light verse nowadays we are likely to have in mind such popular rhymesters as A. P. Herbert and the late A. A. Milne: inheritors of a tradition which goes back through W. S. Gilbert to R. H. Barham and Thomas Hood. John Betjeman, however, can hardly be fitted into this category; on the other hand, he is quite obviously not a 'serious' poet in the sense that we regard Yeats, Eliot or Auden as such, and the recent tendency (exemplified by Lord Birkenhead's preface) to treat him as though he were can only lead to confusion. In this connection, the ' Variations on a Theme Betjeman is an unequal poet, not only in his prosodic technique, but in the quality of his imagination. On the whole he is least good when he is trying to be most serious; some of the 'funny' poems, on the other hand (' Sun and Fun', 'How to get on in Society

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Betjeman, John English poet and essayist. He was the originator of a peculiarly English light verse, nostalgic, and delighting in Victorian and Edwardian architecture. He also wrote prose works on architecture and social history which reflect his interest in the Gothic Revival . His Collected Poems appeared in 1958 and a verse autobiography, Summoned by Bells , in 1960. Betjeman's verse, seen by some as facile, has been much enjoyed for its compassion and wit, and its evocation of places and situations. His letters, edited by his daughter, Candida Lycett Green, were published in two volumes (1994 and 1995). He was knighted in 1969 and became poet laureate in 1972.

Smaller collections of books, pamphlets, and manuscripts have been added to the collection over the years. Description The collection is a comprehensive collection of material by Sir John Betjeman, Britain's seventeenth Poet Laureate. The collection contains first editions, single journal issues, pamphlets, manuscripts, and letters. The chronological and geographic emphasis of the collection is twentieth century England. Although the emphasis of the collection is on poetry and literature, there is a broad cultural and social history character in the total collection. The collection is being developed actively and attempts are made to fill all gaps. The collection is also being broadened to include material in all relevant languages. Language English and selected non-English material (German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese).

    23 April 2000, 8pm
Sir John Betjeman's public image is that of a lifelong devotee of the English upper classes. In a 40-year career as a poet, he celebrated the English countryside, poked affectionate fun at the country set and cursed the vulgarity of the lower orders. The same patrician viewpoint informed his writings on architecture. Appointed Poet Laureate in 1972, he was eventually hailed by the Times newspaper: 'By appointment: Teddy Bear to the Nation'. Channel 4's The Real John Betjeman shows that behind the public image was a more complex reality. Combining hitherto unseen archive material with the testimony of friends ranging from journalist Simon Jenkins to Barry (Dame Edna Everage) Humphries, it shows that Betjeman was a high Tory lyricist who was deeply insecure about his social background and his gift for poetry; a believer in the cohesive force of Christianity who could not himself believe; and an apolitical old buffer who spied for Britain.
John Betjeman's family background was far removed from the aristocratic milieu he loved. His father, a cabinet-maker, was descended from Dutch immigrants, and, when the First World War broke out, the eight-year-old Betjeman was bullied at school by children chanting 'Betjeman's a German spy!'
