EDWARD BELLAMY A Daring Shop-Robber, who was executed at Tyburn On 27th of March, 1728 THIS malefactor was a native of London, and served his time to a tailor; but his apprenticeship was no sooner expired than he associated with some women of ill-fame, and became a thief in order to support their extravagance. His commencement in the art of theft was with a number of young pickpockets, and he soon became an adept in the profession. From this business they advanced a step further. They used to go, three or four in company, to the shops of silversmiths in the evening, and while one of them cheapened some article of small value, his companions used to secrete something of greater. It was likewise a practice with them to walk the streets at night, and, forcing up the windows of shops with a chisel, run off with any property that lay within their reach. Having followed this infamous business about three years, he forged (an offence not then capital) a note, by which he defrauded a linen-draper of money to a considerable amount. Being taken into custody for this forgery he was lodged in Newgate, but discharged without being brought to trial, his friends having found means to accommodate the matter with the injured party. A short time after he left Newgate he made connections with Jonathan Wild, who used frequently to borrow money from Mr Wildgoose, who kept an inn in Smithfield; and Bellamy, wishing to become acquainted with a man whom he thought he could make subservient to his interest, applied to Jonathan to recommend him to Wildgoose, but this the famous thief-taker absolutely refused.

Edward Bellamy Edward Bellamy was born March 26, 1850, in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, and spent most of his life in this industrial town. It was called Chicopee, "river of elms" by the Indians. Bellamy's lineage goes back to the 1630's and 1640's, of old New England families, among them Baptist ministers. Bellamy's father, the Reverend Rufus King Bellamy was the son of the famous Joseph Bellamy who worked closely with Jonathon Edwards in the Great Awakening at the time of the Revolutionary War. His mother, Maria Putnam Bellamy, was the daughter of the Reverend Benjamin Putnam of Springfield, Massachusetts. When he was 17, he applied for admission to West Point, but failed to pass the physical examination. At this time, he became an independent reader and a student at Union College, Schenectady, New York. Bellamy's education was primarily in the United States, but included studies in Germany, where he lived for a year. He studied law and passed the bar examination with distinction in 1871, and opened his own law office in Chicopee. However, when his first and only case caused him to evict a widow for non-payment of rent, he took down his shingle and never again practiced law. In fact, he was so disillusioned with the profession that when he wrote Looking Backward, he banned lawyers from his Ideal World! From 1875-1889, Bellamy published 23 known short stories in some of the best magazines of his day. He was internationally known for the famous and highly influential Looking Backward and its sequel, Equality. We also was recognized by the readers and the editors of his own time as the prolific writer of highly imaginative psychological and speculative short stories and novels. He wrote over 500 articles published in newspapers and magazines.

Bellamy Essays
The following is a collection of original works that are exclusive to this page. They represent my attempts to provide some direction for understanding Bellamy's work and impact. As you'll read, I don't mind hanging my dirty intellectual laundry for public viewing. By no means are these essays complete - rather, they are beginnings... Your suggestions and comments are most appreciated.
Description of Looking Backward - "Looking Backward portrayed a seemingly contradictory balance between individualism and community." Impact of Looking Backward - "Bellamy, himself, argued that his utopian fiction must be implemented quickly by the nationalization of railroads, telegraphs, and similar means of movement and control." Influences on Looking Backward - "Bellamy was inspired by at least three books which appeared before the publishing of Looking Backward." Return

Stephen Bates's Days of Future Past - "The same blind spots commonly afflict utopian predictions, according to University of Maryland History Professor James B. Gilbert. As an illustration, Gilbert discussed Edward Bellamy's Victorian novel Looking Backward: 2000-1887 and its sequel, Equality, which depict an American utopia of the year 2000.
