Madison Smartt Bell
"I've always felt that the Haitian slave revolution is a microcosm of American racial history.."
interviewed by Ron Hogan
In 1996, Madison Smartt Bell was chosen by the British literary magazine Granta as one of the twenty Best Young American Novelists. At the time, he had eight novels out, the most recent of which, All Souls' Rising , was in some ways a significant departure from his earlier work. In it, Bell, who was highly regarded for his portrayals of contemporary society, presented the first volume of a proposed trilogy about the Haitian slave uprising of 1791. Praised by critics nationwide, it went on to earn nominations for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner award for fiction. Ten Indians was published a few months after the Granta awards were announced. Returning to the modern world, Bell tells the brief, but intense, story of Devlin, a Baltimore child psychologist whose attempts at community outreach with a martial arts school in an inner-city black neighborhood meet with tragic consequences. RH: After the historical setting of All Souls' Rising , you jumped right back into a very contemporary urban story with this novel.

Biographical Sketch
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1957, Madison Smartt Bell was raised on a farm in Williamson County just outside Nashville. His father, an attorney, and his mother were friends with the Agrarian School of poets at Vanderbilt University, which included Allen Tate, Caroline Gordon and John Crowe Ransom. Bell did not follow his parents to Vanderbilt but attended Princeton University instead, although as an undergraduate English major he did do independent research on the Agrarian School. Madison Smartt Bell gets back to urban despair
Ten Indians
By Madison Smartt Bell. Pantheon, 264 pages, $23. By Bill Forman LAST YEAR
Madison Smartt Bell managed to transform himself from a cult author into an acclaimed historical novelist. All Souls Rising, his epic novel that deals with the slave rebellions in 18th-century Haiti, was hailed by the New Yorker as the beginning of a brilliant second act in Bell's career. The novel was also a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pen/Faulkner Award for Fiction the latter had particular meaning for the former Tennessean who, he has said, went off to Princeton determined to follow in the literary tradition of the Southern Renaissance writers he read obsessively throughout high school. Perhaps corrupted by his Yankee education, Bell changed his literary intentions after college, going on to chronicle a decidedly contemporary urban existence in his first half-dozen novels. Works like Waiting for the End of the World, Save Me, Joe Lewis, and Dr. Sleep gave us an intriguing cast of characters: ex-junkie hypnotists, existential terrorists, troubled folk. But it's really no surprise that for his latest book Bell has opted to abandon, at least temporarily, the "second act" of his career, returning instead to the urban despair for which he is known and loved. Ten Indians is set in Baltimore, Bell's adopted hometown. Here we are introduced to Mike Devlin, a psychiatrist whose inner conflicts have begun to drown out those of his upper-class patients. Though by all external measures happily married, Devlin has a great deal in common with the loners who traditionally populate Bell's books: mired in lives that have slowly gone wrong, they attempt forced reconciliations between inner and outer realities, with often tragic results.

All Soul's Rising
Granta Top 20 Authors Under 40
Author Info: Madison Smartt Bell
The best Historical Fiction takes great events with which we are familiar but brings an added human dimension to them, first by fleshing out the basic situations via fictional narrative techniques (dialogue, characters thoughts, etc.), but second, by taking the historical context and peopling it with living characters. There is a great difference between the Claudius of a Roman History book and the Claudius of Robert Graves' novels. Graves' achievement is that he breathes life into Claudius and makes him a virtual contemporary of ours, which adds immediacy to the historic circumstances and gives us a vested interest in what occurs. History essentially is transformed into the present. In All Soul's Rising, on the other hand, Bell plops the reader down in the midst of the incredibly violent Haitian revolt at the turn of the 19th Century and through the use of shifting perspectives, allows the reader access to the experiences of those caught up in it, but he provides no context for what is occurring. Basically he's trying to tell the story of a riot from the viewpoint of the rioters; there's just a whirl of events, the meaning of which is impossible to decipher. There are scenes of elaborate torture and violence, but we are so deeply thrust into the story that we have no idea how they connect back to the tides of history. The book seems to be about nothing more than the racial violence itself, disconnected from any rhyme or reason.
