History had never stopped happening in Haiti. The Revolution seemed to have taken place only yesterday. That phenomenon was partly explained by the compressed sense of time of an oral culture, and partly by the fact that Haitians, by means of their religion, had regular opportunities to meet the spirits of the revolutionary dead face to face, and partly by the other fact that nothing had really happened, politically speaking, since the Revolution the same patterns had kept on repeating themselves, over and over, as one feudal baron replaced another. Professor Bell has generously provided commentary for a number of the paintings in our "Under $200" Wing, drawn from his book in progress 'Soul In A Bottle.'

MASTER OF THE CROSSROADS
By Madison Smartt Bell
New York: Panther Books, 2000.
ISBN: 0-375-42056-8. 752 pages, plus Glossary and historical chronology.
$30.00 hard bound. Published Sunday, November 12, 2000, in the Miami Herald Toussaint's bloody battle for the `bauble' of Haiti Master of the Crossroads. Madison Smartt Bell. Pantheon. 752 pages. $30. BY ELLEN KANNER With this, his ninth novel, Madison Smartt Bell returns to the Haiti he so beautifully and achingly portrayed in All Souls' Rising, a finalist for the 1995 National Book Award. Both books are historical, recounting Haiti's bloody fight for independence with the country itself a crucible for racial struggle. A Tennessee native, Bell is haunted by the politics of race, and with Master of the Crossroads he provides a history lesson that tells us much about our present and, perhaps, constitutes a warning for our future. Taking up where its predecessor ended, Master of the Crossroads begins in 1794, with England, Spain and France all vying for control of the French Haitian colony Saint Domingue. The axis on which Bell's novel turns is Toussaint Louverture, the freed slave who led Haiti's revolt. "Toussaint understood the colony to be tossed among the European powers like a precious bauble, a stake or a pawn in their games of war. As yet he did not know enough to reason his way to an outcome. The bits of information he possessed lay quietly in his mind, like seeds." Toussaint is a pawn, used by France and Spain as a means by which to seize Saint Domingue, just as the rich, detached colonists toy with the lives of the poor natives, diminishing a land and its people in order to serve their selfish needs. Toussaint passes through the crossroads of countries and races, assuming the role of hero, traitor, criminal, slave, husband, general, father, pagan and Catholic.

HIDEOUS DREAM
By Stan Goff
Soft Skull Press, 499 pages, $18.50 paper
Review by Madison Smartt Bell. Madison
Smartt Bell is the author of "All Souls'Rising" and, most recently, "Master of the Crossroads."
April 8, 2001
From the Chicago Tribune. "Hideous Dream" is the story of the last campaign in the military career of Stan Goff: the U.S. invasion of Haiti in 1994. Goff went to Vietnam at age 18 and participated in subsequent U.S. military actions with various elite corps, including the Rangers and Delta Force, and in Haiti was master sergeant of a Special Forces A-team a group of eight men in charge of keeping order among many thousands of Haitians in the area around the town of Ft. Liberte. For its account of the recent U.S. occupation of Haiti, Goff's book merits comparison with Bob Shacochis' "Immaculate Invasion," and it provides as privileged an insight into the world of the U.S. military elite as Mark Bowden's "Black Hawk Down," about the 1993 U.S. raid in Somalia. Goff also takes a hard look at the practice that George Bush, during his recent presidential campaign, renounced as "nation-building." At the start Goff declares loudly that he is not a writer, and the book does have some organizational flaws that betray him as a novice. But his best passages are better than most pros could offer. "Above the combat patch was a blue and white airborne tab," Goff writes about insignia worn by a black drill sergeant during his basic training. "The color pierced the predawn halftones ahead of anything else, a bit of brilliance, as Smith's silhouette strode before the morning formation. The patch defeated darkness."

Beyond the Bestsellers, Fall 2002
Bell, Madison Smartt ANYTHING GOES
When the first two words in Granta-celebrated Bell's book are "Curt Cobain," you know you're in uncharted territory. Cobain is offering advice to sometime lead usually bass player Jesse, who narrates this trip through snake-handler band leaders, pregnant vocalists and Black Dogs (bar/pub/honky-tonks named after the first they played). There's even a Sweet Lorraine (allusion to Country Joe purely intentional). This is one of the best rock road books (backroads) of all time.
Chiaventone, Frederick MOON OF BITTER COLD
Chiaventone is a military historian and superb writer, who here depicts the Fetterman Massacre (or Fight, depending on viewpoint) which took place on a frigid windswept bluff in Wyoming the day before Christmas, 1866. Fetterman's ill-advised and contra-orders foray cost the US 80-some men, and gave Red Cloud (whose strategy is almost textbook) one of his great victories. Civil War Vet Fetterman, a popinjay, boasted that with 80 men he could "ride through the Sioux Nation": he was dead wrong. Great book.

y new novel, Anything Goes got started as a dream, the same way the opening of the novel begins (though in the book it's somebody else that dreams it), and the dream itself got started by a lot of other circumstances: nearly ten years ago I had a grant and a year off from my teaching job, but it wasn't convenient to go anywhere, so instead I bought a Les Paul. I grew up near Nashville, and played guitar and banjo since my early teens, mostly bluegrass and country blues. I'd always wanted to learn to play lead guitar, and this year seemed like a good time to do it, so I spent a lot of hours hacking along to records until I had picked up the basics. Nirvana was big then, and I had a copy of Nevermind Then Kurt Cobain showed up in one of my dreams, and explained to me how to play the song, and when I woke up I thought it might be the start of something, so I wrote a short story called "Never Mind," and when I read it over it seemed like it might be a jumping off place for a novel, so I began to write on that, in between things, and mostly just to amuse myself at first. It was a novel without much more of a plan than its characters have, which is to play music from roadhouse to roadhouse up and down the eastern seaboard, following good weather. Elsewhere, my old friend from the Hollins M.A. program, Wyn Cooper, had washed up in Vermont. He had left a Ph.D. program, for various compelling reasons, without getting the degree, and what he had to show for many years of education was a slender volume of verses called

Bell is best known for his historical novels. All Souls' Rising , about the Haitian Revolution, was a finalist for both the PEN/Faulkner and National Book Awards. Master of the Crossroads was then second in Bell's projected Haitian trilogy. Anything Goes , the versatile Mr. Bell's most recent novel is very different, centering as it does on rock musicians in today's American South.

MARY GORDON HOSTED BY MADISON SMARTT BELL An encore showing of The Writing Life with Novelist Mary Gordon hosted by Madison Smartt Bell. What secrets drive a writer's work? How do they become metaphors? Mary Gordon is the highly praised author of six volumes of fiction - among them Final Payments Temporary Shelter and The Rest of Life - and one of essays, Good Boys and Dead Girls . Interviewed by friend and fellow novelist Madison Smartt Bell, she reads "Losing My Father," a chapter from her memoir, The Shadow Man Bell observes that Gordon's work, though often centered on domesticity and Catholicism, takes on a larger scope. Gordon feels she treats what happens inside the mind, the balance between inside and outside worlds, the differences between ideas and how we really live. For The Shadow Man , she chose a non-fiction form because the facts she uncovered in searching for her father were so "improbable." This episode originally aired in 1995. Back

Madison Smartt Bell discusses inspiration for latest novel
By J.C. Sanders
Senior Staff Writer I ordered coffee, Madison a latte. Madison Smartt Bell is the author of two collections of short stories and eight novels, a National Book Award finalist for All Souls' Rising, and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1995. You can see why I, a beginning writer, was a bit nervous.
But believe it or not, he appeared more nervous than me. Not due to my presence, you can be sure, but the presence of admiration. His modesty and desire to be in Baltimore writing, instead of on this book tour, caused him to shift in his seat and nervously brush hair that wasn't there out of his face.
He looked around the room as I began to question him about his new book Ten Indians
"Is that how you guys do it down here?" he asked, nodding at three gentlemen sitting at a table nearby.
"What?" I asked, looking over in their direction three ordinary guys, from what I could tell.
"No holster," he said. "Just stuck down in his pants."
Then I saw what he was talking about. One of the fellows had a revolver crammed down in his back waistband.

'Master of the Crossroads' by Madison Smartt Bell Historical novel makes Haiti slave revolt come alive Sunday, December 24, 2000 By Sharon Dilworth Master of the Crossroads By Madison Smartt Bell Pantheon
This new novel does a tremendous job of capturing the turmoil, violence and chaos of Haiti’s history. Madison Smartt Bell began his trilogy of the Haitian slave revolt with the 1995 novel “All Souls’ Rising” (a finalist for the National Book Award that year). This second volume, while using many characters introduced in the first, concentrates on Toussaint L’Ouverture, the Haitian military hero, and recounts the only successful slave revolt in history. The novel opens in 1794, when the French Republic proclaims the abolition of slavery on the island of what was then called Saint Dominigue. Toussaint L’Ouverture’s revolt reflects the passion of the country, and his struggle shows the confusion of the times. Bell’s novel is atmospheric, well researched, and well written. He uses his knowledge of traditions on the island and brings to light the magnitude of what was happening at the end of the 18th century.

The Forgotten Revolution
Madison Smartt Bell's Master of the Crossroads by Doug Childers
Madison Smartt Bell's Master of the Crossroads , the second volume in his projected trilogy about the Haitian Revolution, is a stunning achievement with a beautifully tragic figure at its center. I n the wake of the French Revolution, Saint Domingue (modern-day Haiti) staged its own revolt with varied motivations, as Madison Smartt Bell showed in his All Souls' Rising (a 1995 National Book Award finalist in fiction). Landowners and slave owners wanted to gain their economic independence from France (as the Americans had done fifteen years before), and both enslaved Africans and persons of mixed African / European blood wanted to make the French and American Revolution's declaration of rights apply to all people, regardless of race. While the intentions may have been noble, though, the revolt itself was not. Two thousand whites were killed and nearly two hundred sugar plantations burned, but the French National Assembly failed to issue a definitive gesture of solidarity to either side, and the warring factions themselves failed to force a military solution.
