    The Marriage of Figaro
    Contemporary accounts of Beaumarchais
Extract from Gudin's journal describing Beaumarchais and his household during the 1770's:- ... Two days later he invited me to his house, presented me to his father, to the one sister who lived with him, and whom I had never met. I saw him as simple in his domestic circle as he was brilliant in a salon. I was very soon certain that he was a good son, good brother, good master, and good father, because he had still a little son, a young child whose infantile words were often repeated to us, which charmed me all the more because it betrayed his paternal tenderness ... We soon learned to esteem each other from a similar foundation of severe principles, hidden in his case under an exterior of lightness and gaiety by a vivid and constant love of the good, the beautiful, the honest, by an equal disdain for prejudice and for all opinions ill-founded. . . The taste for letters, for the theatre, for the arts, the same indulgence for the weaknesses of the human heart, strengthened our union . . . His character (writes Gudin de la Brenellerie) was an unusual combination of good qualities and the most contradictory faults: he had wit but no judgement, pride but no dignity; a vast but disordered memory; a great desire for knowledge, but an even greater taste for dissipation; prodigious bodily strength; a violence of deposition which clouded his always rather confused judgement: frequent accesses of fury in which he resembled a drunken savage, not to say a ferocious beast. Always swayed by the impression of the moment, regardless of consequences, he had more than once brought trouble on himself. Banished from the kingdom for five years on one occasion, he employed his time of exile in making a scientific expedition, visited the Pyramids, foregathered with the Bedouins of the desert, and brought back many objects of natural history, and an unfortunate ape which he beat savagely every day.

An impeccably-acted costume drama, this film transports us back in time more than two centuries to a France where growing social unrest is soon to doom the Bourbon monarchy. The movie essays approximately ten years in the life of playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (Fabrice Luchini), the celebrated author of "The Barber of Seville" and "The Marriage of Figaro". The film is, by turns, an adventure, a dissection of the creative process, and a social commentary. Through it all, one thing remains constant: the script, by director Edouard Molinaro and Jean-Claude Brisville, refuses to relinquish its grasp on a tongue-in-cheek approach. Molinaro is no stranger to films with a humorous edge – his La Cage aux Folles took a serious theme and cleverly concealed it in a screenplay that was rich in comedy.

    BEAUMARCHAIS AND MOZART
    by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 588. Today, you will go dancing, but genius will play the tune. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. M ozart wrote The Marriage of Figaro for a new market for the public subscription concert. He was an early pioneer of listener-supported music. You couldn't be very radical when you wrote for royal patrons. Here you had means for taking your case to the people. It was 1786. Revolution was afoot. Mozart's librettist adapted The Marriage from a play by a French clockmaker, born Pierre Caron. When he was only 19, Caron invented a fine new clock escapement mechanism. That earned him enough money to run with the rich. He married a wealthy widow. He took the fancy name of Beaumarchais. By the age of 27, he was teaching harp to Louis XV's daughters. He had a nose for court intrigue. He soon gained the title of Count Beaumarchais. He moved from mechanics to music to social climbing. Then he took up play-writing. And his plays supported the cause of revolution from inside the palace walls. His best known works were the original Barber of Seville and Marriage of Figaro The Marriage came out after a long bout with French censors the same year Mozart began his concert series.

Caron de Beaumarchais painted (1755) by Jean M. Nattier. [private collection]
Pierre-Augustin Caron was born in Paris, the son of a watchmaker. Initially, Pierre followed in his father's trade, and exhibited a talent not only with mechanical objects, but in the fields of music and writing. He taught the harp to the daughters of the French king Louis XV, which introduced him to the high society of Paris. Talented and handsome, Pierre became notoriously popular with women. By marrying in succession two wealthy widows and pursuing his own commercial activities, he acquired considerable financial means. He wrote successful theater pieces and engaged in other literary activities. His comedy The Barbarer of Seville was shown in 1775, and was a popular success with the broad public, if not all of the nobility. With his money and social connections, Pierre Caron was able to assume the name ‘de Beaumarchais' in 1756.
Despite his rather irregular background [or maybe because of it] the French foreign minister, Vergennes, turned to Beaumarchais to conduct a series of secret dealings in arranging for French support to the colonial rebels at the outset of the American Revolution. There is some speculation that Beaumarchais had eariler performed a secret mission in London for Louis XV and Mme Du Berry in 1774. However, the scheme set up in 1776 to support the American cause was quite elaborate.
To provide cover for his operations, Beaumarchais followed a pattern of deception already being undertaken by the French. Beaumarchais set up a fictitious firm using a Spanish name:

    Michel Serrault . . . . . . . . . . Louis XV
Fabrice Luchini, who first appeared as a child actor in Eric Rohmer’s CLAIRE’S KNEE and who upstaged Gerard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant in COLONEL CHABERT, plays the roguish dramatist with a mix of hubris and humility. Never sure of his writerly abilities, he seems genuinely surprised at the success of his plays, and nonplussed by the praise of Voltaire, then the greatest living writer. Cameo turns by veteran stars Michel Piccoli (as the Prince of Conti), Claude Brially (as a priest) and Michel Serrault (as King Louis XV) are matched by bright newcomers Manuel Blanc (in a role as Beaumarchais’s literary secretary, and looking painfully like MTV actor Pauly Shore), and Sandrine Kiberlain (as Miss Willermawlaz, the playwright’s third wife). All the actors (even Jeff Nuttall as Benjamin Franklin) seem genuinely caught up in a light-hearted play (the film) that acts as a shell holding many small plays, some from Beaumarchais’s life, and some from his pen. Although the film leaves us at a high point, full of idealism and bonhomie, the French revolution and its later mutations were not so kind to Beaumarchais. He was arrested by the Directory, Robespierre’s gang, in 1792 and then exiled to Holland. His wife, his daughter, and his sister were sentenced to death in 1794. He did, in the year between get to listen for the first time to Mozart’s operatic adaptation, "La Nozze di Figaro." Returned to France a few years later, Beaumarchais died of apoplexy. It was the same year, 1799, another great French social critic, Balzac, was born.

    Synopsis:
A portrait of the complex life of 18th century gadfly Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, most noted for his plays "Barber of Seville" and "The Marriage of Figaro." Although a talented playwright, Beaumarchais's social activities were not confined to the stage, in fact he conspired with France's leaders in aiding rebels from the American colonies. Beaumarchais's controversial political involvement included: being sent by Louis XV on a secret mission to London, imprisonment in Britain, and even having a short-lived career as a gun-runner for the American Revolution.
