W ORKS of philosophy can last for millennia, novels for centuries. Works of history, if they're really good, survive maybe a generation. But Richard Hofstadter's The American Political Tradition: And the Men Who Made It is now celebrating its fiftieth year in print and remains a solid backlist seller. High school students, undergraduates, and graduate students read it, as do lay readers. Journalists grab it off the shelf when they need to pepper a column with a dash of historical authority. Academic historians revere it too: whenever they set out to write about it, they end up producing panegyrics. Like a robust octogenarian, the vigorous old book invites us to inquire of it the secrets of its longevity. Discuss this article in
Begun in 1943, when Hofstadter was just twenty-seven years old, and completed four years later, The American Political Tradition launched the young scholar on his career as the pre-eminent historian of his time. He had already written one book

Richard Hamilton Thursday, February 13, 7:00 P.M.
Members $85, guests $110 New York City and Newport, Rhode Island, go way back. It was, after all, largely members of New York's elite Four Hundred who transformed the tiny island, turning it into America's first resort playground. Summers, New York's moneyed class would make an en masse exodus for their "cottages" in Newport. This month, we're reversing time and direction by bringing a taste of Newport's Gilded Age to Manhattan in the person of Richard Hamilton of the soon-to-open Spiced Pear at The Chanler. Newport Daily News columnist Midge Knerr wrote about that stove, "it's obvious the owners have a lot of faith in Hamilton." You will, too, after one taste of his elegant cuisine.

    by Richard Beard
You will need three English coins of the same denomination, preferably silver and minted in the same year. Heads, our Queen, is warp. She is light, warm, strong, rigid, active, odd. Tails is weft: dark, cold, supple, restful, and even. Although weft is weak and warp is strong, there is strength in weakness, and weakness in strength. The English Book of Changes is an oracle that responds to sincere meditation on any given situation, exploring both its correctness and its consequences. The wisdom of the Book is based on ancient texts handed down through generations, their origins often lost. They take into account your present circumstances, analyse possibilities for action, and frequently refer you back to your past. The ideal place to consult the Book is wherever you feel the most self-possessed and serene, such as the patio or conservatory, or even in the bathroom! 1. Take your three coins in cupped hands, shake, and let fall simultaneously on a flat surface. 2. Heads equals a value of one.

Hi everyone, Well there has been some discussion here about the "Elders" of ACC. My understanding is that two of these elders are Richard Coenenburg and Bruce Thurstin. I have spent severals years with these two humans during the years 1976 - 1979. They were living in the foothills of the Sierras, outside of Tuolumne City. They promoted a curriculum they called The Planetary Country School. HOW I MET THEM- When I was just out of high school I was back packing in the Yosemite Park. After a summer of partying, as I woke up in the beautiful Cathedral Peaks and Lakes area I looked up at the sky and prayed, Father I don't want to party all my life, I want to return to a spiritual life. (I grew up a christian but set it aside when it couldn't answer all my theological questions.) That day we hiked out for a two day return to the valley floor, approximatly 22 miles. By noon we'd already covered half the distance. One friend who didn't take too well to back packing with bears and snakes over heard my other friend and I talk about what to do as we were getting back faster than we thought. We wanted to find a tangent hike to take to kill the time gained. When the non backpacker heard we could make it back by night fall he was gone!!!! We didn't catch up to him until night fall when we were back at the park headquarters. Well, that night as my packing friend and I pondered what to do with our two days left, we walked around the campground. He said, "Look over there. There's two interesting looking hippies. Let's go talk with them." So we did. It was Bruce and Richard. Bruce had long white hair and a Confucious like beard, Richard long dark hair and equally full beard. They both sported robes. They told us about the UB and the planetary government, UFO's, and read a line from the Life and Teachings of Jesus from the Ubook. Needless to say the quote went right over my head. But the sensation in by body was that this book was a treasure house of information I needed to know. (TA at work, I believe.) They had two dogs named Andon and Fonta - male and female German Shepards.

Lady Tess Farnsworth bitterly accepted the royal decree to wed the man whom she detested above all. The gloriously handsome Earl of Easterby had failed her in a desperate time of need, and her only solace in wedding him was the promise of vengeance. First, Tess plotted to seduce the Earl. PROLOGUE DEAR READER:
England, l4l4 Flames licked up to the starry sky, and an orange glow throbbed at the center of the crowd. The fires of hell could not burn brighter , thought Lord Richard Avery. Tugging leather reins with numb fingers, he drew in his mount at the edge of the riveted crowd near St. Giles’s Field. His spirited black destrier fought the bit, whinnying in fear. The beast tossed back his mane and bared the whites of his eyes. "Easy, Shadow," Richard murmured, scratching the horse’s withers. "I don’t like the smell any more than you do."

Richard Beard (who on 23rd June 1841 purchased the patent rights for the daguerreotype originally sealed by the patent agent Miles Berry) brought six cases against professional photographers, generally over infringement of the patent because the photographer was using the technique without a licence, or (as with Alfred Barber) because of a dispute after a licence had been obtained.

Richard Beard and the Daguerreotype Patent in England Portrait of Richard Beard (1801-1885) Richard Beard opened England's first photographic portrait studio in London on 23rd March 1841 and made a fortune selling daguerreotype licences. Richard Beard Nicephore Niepce , the man who had made the first successful photograph from nature in 1826. Antoine Claudet , a French glass merchant living in London, who had made direct contact with Daguerre in France and had secured from the inventor a licence to make daguerreotype portraits in London. Until the patent rights of British Patent No 8194 expired on 14th August 1853, any person who wanted to legally carry out the art of daguerreotype portrait photography on a commercial basis had to apply to Richard Beard, to either purchase the right of patent in a prescribed geographical area or to purchase a licence to work the process in a particular town or city. 79. X20 - Richard Beard
X20 is richard beard's novel about a man's adventures with smokingand an insight into the tobacco industry. X20. richard beard.
    http://member.melbpc.org.au/~kja/x20.html
Richard Beard Not my usual fare this one, it was not a sci-fi, horror, fantasy or anything like that, it was just a story. The story was not about a great deal.
The book was basically written in an autobiographical style, although seeing that the main characters name was different to the authors I am asuming it is a work of fiction. The reason the character is writing the book is because he is quitting smoking and is writing a book to keep himself busy to distract himself from the fact that he is not smoking.
The novel is basically the characters memoirs of smoking, I percieve the majority of the sotry as taking place over roughly a ten year period, with ocasional flashbacks to early childhood thrown in for background referance. There are four or five diferent timelines at once, they gradually all end up at the same point.
At some stage I figured out what the name of the book was all about the "x20" is times twenty (by twenty), the number of cigarettes the character smoked per day at the height of his "career".
The cover has a nice satin finish and feels quite nice, the smoke rings give the reader the idea that it may have something to do with smoking. The really clever thing is the diagramatic representation of the top-down view of a cigarette packet, each chapter sees one more cigarette taken from the pack.
