Katharine Lee Bates August 12 , 1859 - March 28, 1929)
Probably best known as the author of the words to "America the Beautiful," Bates was a prolific poet and a professor of English and head of the English department at Wellesley, where she had been a student in its earliest years. Her father, a Congregational minister, died when Katharine was less than a month old. Her brothers had to go to work to help support the family, but Katharine was given an education. She received her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1880. She wrote to supplement her income. "Sleep" was published by The Atlantic Monthly during her undergraduate years at Wellesley.

Katherine Lee Bates
Born Falmouth August 12, 1859,
Died Wellesley March 28, 1929 Teacher - Poet - Author of "America the Beautiful" Born on Aug. 12, 1859, Miss Bates was the fifth child born to William and Cornelia Frances Lee Bates. The family had come to Falmouth in 1858. The Rev. Bates served as pastor of the First Congregational Church on the Village Green. As noted in church records, Katharine was baptized on September 4, 1859. She was only three weeks old. Because of his illness, her father, Rev. William Bates, was unable to attend church. He was forced to discontinue his preaching the previous May. Now his arms and legs were paralyzed, and he had difficulty breathing. He could not speak above a whisper. A friend, Rev. Professor Butler of Madison University, Wisconsin came to the Bates' home to officiate at Katharine's baptism. William died on September 10, just six days after Katharine's baptism. Miss Bates was a month old when her father died from a tumor in his spine which may have been the result of an earlier injury. He strained his back in 1853 when, in rescuing fellow passengers from a train wreck, he was obliged to rip a seat out of the floor. "Katie" was said to have eased the pain of her mother's first years of widowhood. At age 12, life in Falmouth ended when the family moved to GranitviIle, now known as Wellesley Hills. She attended Wellesley High School, graduating in 1874. In 1878, She graduated from the more advanced Newton High School. Miss Bates then entered Wellesley College, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in 1880 She became president of it's second graduating class and returned to teach for 40 years.

If You Could Come
My love, my love, if you could come once more From your high place, I would not question you for heavenly lore, But, silent, take the comfort of your face. I would not ask you if those golden spheres In love rejoice, If only our stained star hath sin and tears, But fill my famished hearing with your voice. One touch of you were worth a thousand creeds. My wound is numb Through toil-pressed, but all night long it bleeds In aching dreams, and still you cannot come.            Katherine Lee Bates

Thank Falmouth's Katherine Lee Bates for " America the Beautiful
T
he words all America is singing to honor the heroes of Black Tuesday 9-11, were written by a native Cape Codder over a century and a half ago. Katherine Lee Bates , who wrote the poem "America The Beautiful," was born in a house on the Town Green in Falmouth on August 12th, 1859. Her father was the pastor of the Congregational Church right around the corner. This house is impeccably maintained by the Falmouth Historical Society today. Miss Bates moved to Wellesley and graduated from Wellesley College in 1880. She was a professor at the college until 1925. The following year there was a national movement to adopt her hymn which had been set to music as the national anthem. However, the older, more established "Star-Spangled Banner" won official status on March 3, 1931 when President Herbert Hoover signed a bill making it our anthem. Even today, advocates of the hymn push for official anthem status because it is far easier to sing, and the words mean more to most citizens than the obscure War of 1812 references by Francis Scott Key in his poem "Star-Spangled Banner."

About Falmouth
"The Quiet Corner of Cape Cod" Falmouth (including Woods Hole) is one of the Cape's oldest resort towns. The island of Martha's Vineyard is plainly visible from any harbor in Falmouth, being just a few miles across the Vineyard Sound. For this reason, the harbor is busy with ferry boats going back and forth. The historic village square is charming. Woods Hole, home of the world-famous Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, is a fun walk and has a slightly more bohemian flavor than the rest of Falmouth. Both these towns are a nice stay if you're interested in going to the Vineyard, beachgoing (there are many beaches in Falmouth), and prefer a more vibrant, busy place to stay. History
Falmouth was incorporated in 1694 and was named for its sister town in England. Bartholomew Gosnold, the man who named Cape Cod, sailed from Falmouth, England, in 1602 and landed upon these shores. Until incorporation, Falmouth was known by its Native American name of Succonessett which means "place where the black clam is found."

Come on it still,
This Puck of plants
The wise would do away with,
The sunshine slants
To play with,
Our wee, gold-dusty flower, the yellow clover,
Which once in Parting for a time
That then seemed long,
Ere time for you was over,
We sealed our own? Do you remember yet, O Soul beyond the stars, Beyond the uttermost dim bars Of space, Dear Soul, who found earth sweet, Remember by love's grace, In dreamy hushes of the heavenly song, How suddenly we halted in our climb, Lingering, reluctant, up that farthest hill, Stooped for the blossoms closest to our feet, And gave them as a token Each to Each

Katherine Lee Bates
Generally known only as the poet who composed America the Beautiful , Katherine Lee Bates was a fascinating woman. The daughter of a Congregationalist pastor, she was born in Falmouth, Massachusetts in 1859 and spent her life in New England. According to Planet Out web site links to articles on Boston marriage in the women's history section of about.com.) In 1893, traveling cross-country to a summer teaching job in Colorado Springs in 1893, a trip up Pike's Peak inspired her to write America the Beautiful . Although she originally considered the poem unworthy of publication, after several years she published it in The Congregationalist and it became immensely popular. After it was set to music the royalties supported her comfortably for the rest of her life. Bates wrote many books and hundreds of poems. In 1912, Coman was stricken with breast cancer, and Bates nursed her through three painful years of decline. Katharine Bates lived until 1929, but she never stopped mourning Katharine Coman.
