We would have been willing to win, but we were content to lose. Frederick and Steven Barthleme
I supplement my reading materials - which consist mostly of bargain-bin used books - with something even cheaper. The Garland Public Library has a table groaning with donated magazines. I look through these for anything with fiction/short stories (usually the New Yorker ) in it, drop the proper donation in the little box, and haul them off. I read a New Yorker the other day, and after the Fiction section I cruised the articles for something interesting - and found it. The piece that was so fascinating ( Good Losers , article in Mar 8, 1999 New Yorker Magazine) was the story of two brothers (Frederick and Steven) named Barthelme . They are both writers of some renown, and are from a literary family. Their brother Donald was a well-known trailblazer of modern writing, but had passed away recently. Part of the story dealt with the brother's relationship with their family and their late brother. This was presented as a partial explanation (though not an excuse) for what had happened to them. What had happened was harrowing. They were originally from Southeast Texas (an area I'm pretty familiar with) and had moved to a university in the Mississippi valley. There they discovered they had a weakness for and an addiction to gambling.

(Harcourt) Frederick and Steven Barthelme teach English literature and writing at the University of Mississippi in Hattiesburg. Starting in 1995, they began to drive down together to the Grand Casino in Gulfport to play blackjack, the slots, roulette. When their father, a Houston architect, died, they took his inheritance - more than $250,000 in bonds - and blew it, managed to squander all that he had left and then some. In 1998, the Grand Casino indicted the two of them, claiming they had conspired with a dealer to defraud the casino. Their case created much ado. Here were two respected college professors blowing a considerable inheritance in a seedy Mississippi casino. And then - on top of that - there was the possibility that they had been trying to screw the casino. The chance that the two might spend considerable time in the hoosegow for their malfeasances added much pith to the story. The phrase Double down comes from a somewhat arcane rule in blackjack, where you take your two cards, flip them up, double your bet, and have the dealer give you another card down. It doubles your chance to win but it also doubles your chance to lose. Double Down

    How to Use this List
Rather than create a million more links (this page was added late as a reader suggestion), the link after the title will take you to the list the entry is on, but not directly to the title, so scroll to the title you're interested in. If you want to get back to this list from an individual "Beyond" page, go to the bottom of that page, and click back over to the A-Z list, or hit your "back" button. OK?
If you are looking for a specific author, here are letters you can click at to get you in that author's proximity:
    B
    D E F ...
Or, go to the bottom of this page.
Bonus: whenever you see an image in the text, beneath it will be a click back to the top of this A-Z list. Then you can keep searching, or use the "bottom of page" option to escape to other parts of the website.

    WHAT'S EATING WILLIAM GASS?
Take One: Sometime in the 60s a philosophy teacher named William H. Gass was writing a novel. He had it about where he wanted it when someone stole the manuscript from his car. He re-wrote the novel, adding one new outsized character named Jethro, and published it under the title Omensetter's Luck . Some guy reviewed the new novel in a respected national magazine, called it the most important novel of this half-century, and made reference in the review to Joyce, Proust, people like that. There were, let us say, expectations. Gass followed up with a collection of short stories called In the Heart of the Heart of the Country , which included a longish story called "The Pedersen Kid," a story which he'd had a hell of a time getting published (John Gardner finally published it in a small magazine called MSS, now defunct) and which Raymond Carver, who you've heard of, couldn't make any sense of when he was learning the trade with Gardner. (Gardner told him to read it again. As near as I can tell, Ray didn't. Didn't hurt him.) Gass then began writing a novel called The Tunnel . From time to time pieces of the new novel would appear in literary magazines, sometimes accompanied by essays in which Gass delivered himself of rather chesty literary pronouncements. Years passed. He kept working on the novel. Meanwhile, his essays kept appearing, mostly in

Monday, May 15, 2000 Brent Brent also played a huge part in another favorite. "Bats". Fear and Loathing. Can't forget that, or our wicked parody of it on our road trip down to the San Francisco. Now I'm getting nostalgic. And of course that leads to the Darma Bums and On The Road. How many times have we been down to "City Lights" now?
