Donald Barthelme - (1931-1989) Philadelphia By Jon Moyer I. Biography Donald Barthelme Jr., short story writer, novelist, editor, journalist, and teacher, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 7, 1931 to Donald and Helen Barthelme. He was the oldest of five children growing up in Houston, Texas. As Donald Sr. was establishing himself as a well-known architect, Donald Jr. sought out on journalism at his hometown schools, St. Thomas and Lamar High School in Houston. When Donald Jr., graduated from high school he wanted to pursue his vocation in journalism and in the fall of 1949, he enrolled at the University of Houston where he worked and later ran the Daily Cougar. Just as Barthelme began to see his career develop in front of him, he was drafted into the Army right before he was about to graduate. However, to his delight, while doing his service he was asked to work for an Army newspaper. When he returned about two years later, he got a job as a reporter for the Houston Post. In the following years, Barthelme moved up and became the editor of Acta Diurna, a weekly newsletter for the University of Houston's faculty and staff. As time went on Barthelme founded and edited a paper called the Forum at the University. As people began to see his capability, he soon was asked and agreed, to be the director of the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston. However, following his heart's desire he resigned one year later to become a contemporary fiction and fantasy writer.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
The brevity and irony of Barthelme's work are sometimes surprising to students. Again, the high modernist qualityevery word crafted for its purpose, but caught in a web of style and form that makes the whole seem artlessly naturalmust be explained. Students may have read less contemporary fiction than modern and what contemporary fiction they have read may well be limited to the genres of romance, science fiction, and mystery. As with any period of art, the determining craft and language practices need explication. In the case of such a short selection, ask students to write about the work at the beginning of the classand again at the end, once discussion has finishedsomething simple like "What were your reactions to this work?" Then ask them to compare their two answers with the hope of showing them that reading must be an active process, that they must form opinions. And in this author's case, getting his readers to respond is his first priority.

Born in Philadelphia but raised in Houston, Texas, Barthelme began writing stories and poems in high school and continued writing (journalism as well as fiction and poetry) at the University of Houston. After Army service in Japan and Korea, he returned to the university and worked as a reporter locally. He then became director of Houston’s Contemporary Arts Museum.
In 1962 he moved to New York and soon found his own voice and style. He became a regular contributor to the New Yorker , and began to find in his fiction the innovation that was occurring in film and graphic art. He was influenced by the French Symbolists, and worked frequently with myth and spatial techniques (perhaps because of the visionary influence of his father, an architect). His vision was comic, surreal, macabre; and his play with language—giving the reader the unexpected, the grotesque, and above all the fragmented—marked him as a postmodernist even before that classification existed.
With a montage style reminiscent of that of Dos Passos, Barthelme drew phrases and lines from advertising, songs, and stereotyped phrases of the times; and created from those borrowings new structures and new perspectives. His first novel

Biographical Sketch
Donald Barthelme, Jr., short story writer, novelist, editor, journalist, and teacher, was born in Philadelphia on April 7, 1931. In 1933, his family moved to Houston, Texas where his father, Donald Barthelme, Sr., soon established himself as a well-known architect in the style of Mies and Corbu. Barthelme Junior got an early start in journalism at St. Thomas and Lamar High Schools in Houston. In the fall of 1949, he enrolled at the University of Houston where he worked on the staff of the Daily Cougar and, as a 20-year-old sophomore journalism major, was the youngest student in the Cougar 's history to hold the position of editor. Before graduating, he was drafted into the Army in February of 1953 and served in Korea. During his service he worked on an Army newspaper. When he returned to Houston in late 1954, he became employed as a reporter for the

"Fragments are the only forms I trust."
(See the moon, 1968).

BARTHELME, Donald. Snow White. New York: Atheneum, 1967. Octavo, pp.[8], 180, [4]. Original speckled white cloth lettered in grey and red, top edge black, endpapers red. Original pictorial dust-jacket, printed in red, black and blue, designed by Lawrence Ratzkin. Some very light soiling to dust-jacket, otherwise a very fine copy in a very fine dust-jacket. FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST NOVEL, which is a revisionist working of the Disney film. Published after a year on the Guggenheim fellowship, Barthelme's Snow White transforms the popular fairytale heroine into a housewife of the Sixties who serves a household of impotent dwarves while waiting for her Prince. It is also a satirical comment on the emptiness of contemporary crazes and ideologies. Thomas Pynchon spoke of Barthelme as "one of a handful of American authors, there to make us feel bad, who know instinctively how to stash the merchandise, bamboozle the inspectors and smuggle their nocturnal contraband right on past the check points of daylight reality."
