James M. Barrie
The works of playwright-novelist James M. Barrie have delighted both young and old for a century. From childhood he was determined to be a writer.
James Matthew Barrie was born on May 9, 1860, in Kirriemuir, Scotland. He was the ninth child and third son of David and Margaret (Ogilvy) Barrie. His father was a weaver. Barrie attended Glasgow Academy and Dumfries Academy. In 1878 he enrolled in Edinburgh University, where he graduated in four years with a master's degree.
Barrie's best-known play, 'Peter Pan', was first presented in 1904. It is the story of a boy who refuses to grow up and creates his own world of Indians, pirates, and fairies. It was adapted as a play with music (1950), and as a musical comedy (1954, revived in 1979) that was also performed on television. 'Peter Pan' was also made into a silent film (1924) and a feature-length animated cartoon (1952). Barrie retold the play in narrative form as 'Peter and Wendy' (1911). Because he wanted his creation to benefit youngsters as much as possible, Barrie donated his rights to 'Peter Pan' to a London children's hospital.

About the Playwright: Sir James M. Barrie By Angel M. Pilkington
From Insights, 2000 Barrie James Matthew Barrie Barrie is most recognized today for Peter Pan, a character based on the children in Barrie's life and on Barrie himself. The story of Peter Pan began with a book called The Little White Bird, published in 1902. The character, Peter, was introduced as a baby, and he was later developed into the play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. The play premiered in 1904, and productions and adaptations of Peter Pan are still common, including Steven Spielberg's movie, Hook (1991). Sir James Barrie's work is still popular today because of the many rich elements he took from his own life and the lives of people around him. He believed in the power of emotion, but he also was possessed of an irrepressible humor. He saw the pathos and beauty in humanity, but just as clearly he perceived the confusions and the cruelties. How else could he have made Peter Pan, Wendy, and Captain Hook? Home Back to Educational Resources Index Home Back to Educational Resources Index

When he was six years old his older brother David (who was their mother's favourite) died. Barrie set himself to console his mother, and later attributed this as his start down the road to becoming an author. When he began writing stories and novels, he set the majority of the stories in a fictionalized version of Kirriemuir, which he called Thrums.

6. The Story Of J.M.B.
A look inside the mind of Scottish playwright james M. barrie.

THE STORY OF J.M.B. By SEWELL STOKES This article was originally published in Theatre Arts, Vol. XXV, No. II . Sewell Stokes. New York: Theatre Arts, Inc., November 1941. pp. 845-848. Purchase Books by Sir James M. Barrie O Barrie, a Biography ) suddenly enlightened me. Legend dies hard in England, which is why, even having learned the details of his career, his own countrymen will persist in declaring the author of Peter Pan to be a sentimentalist whose plays were written with a pen dipped in a mixture of syrup and tears; who saw life through spectacles heavily rose-tinted, and who was the possessor of that dubious gift of the gods the "heart of a child". But of American critics I have more hope, for it is to their credit that, when considering a man, they insist upon disregarding the popular misconceptions of a gullible public, and concentrate upon the discovery of what he was like at those moments when, seeking escape, he shut himself away from the world. And for this reason they will, I believe, appreciate this study of a man who was a considerable artist; a study which must satisfy the seekers after truth, as certainly as it must annoy those who prefer to have their false fancies preserved. From a study of Barrie's work it should not be difficult for future generations, if they are sufficiently interested, to draw some conclusions as to its creator's character. With a writer, it is said, the style is the man. And up to a point the argument is sound enough. But I think there can be no doubt in Barrie's case that a better understanding of the plays themselves is to be gained from some knowledge of their author's peculiar temperament, and of the circumstances in which a few of them were written.

1 Low 10 High Anonymous No Subject May 23rd, 2002 Rating: 3.0000 I love Peter Pan. The classic tale of one child who never grows up. Does it always have to be in London? Have there been stage productions done of it, not using an English dialect? I can't locate a script for it on line, which bites, because I don't want to go buy it right now. I'm going to go play Wendy this summer at The Muny theatre in St. Louis. I'm excited and terrified. I'll have to fly and wear a harness and how terrifying is that? I want to find out more about Peter Pan, I feel it must have been a truly important story to a lot of people in their lives and yet, I'm having trouble finding related subjects. I hope you read Peter Pan and remember the magic of believing and the glory and unwavering love of mothers. Cheers to Peter.

Peter Pan Book: James M. Barrie As early as 1905, a musical version of Peter Pan had appeared on the New York stage featuring Maude Adams as the boy who wouldn't grow up. In 1924, Jerome Kern tried his hand at adapting the popular children's story, and in 1950, Leonard Bernstein wrote five songs for a stage adaptation of Peter Pan which featured Boris Karloff and Jean Arthur. But it was not until 1954 that the most popular stage version of Peter Pan would be born thanks to producer Jerome Robbins. Developed as part of the Los Angeles and San Francisco Civic Light Opera series, Robbins originally planned to use the relatively unknown composer/lyricist team of Mark Charlap and Carolyn Leigh, but when he began to realize the potential of the project, he turned to the more established team of Jule Styne, Betty Comden and Adolph Green for additional songs. The original production featured Mary Martin as Peter Pan and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook. It opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on October 20, 1954 and ran for 152 performances. On September 6, 1979, the show was revived at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre with Sandy Duncan playing the lead role. This production proved even more popular than the first, enjoying a run of 551 performances.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback J. M. Barrie (1860-1937) - in full Sir James Matthew, Baronet Barrie Scottish journalist, playwright, and children's book writer. Barrie became world famous with his play and story about PETER PAN (1904), the boy who lived in Never Land, had a war with Captain Hook, and would not grow up. The first name of Peter Pan was almost certainly taken from Peter Llewellyn Davies (1897-1960), one of the several Davies brothers that Barrie knew. "When the first baby laughed for the first time, the laugh broke into a thousand pieces and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies." (from Peter Pan James Matthew Barrie was born in the Lowland village of Kirriemuir, in Forfashire. His father, David Barrie was a handloom weaver, and mother, Margaret Ogilvy, the daughter of a stonemason. They had ten children, Barrie was the ninth. Jamie, as he was called, heard tales of pirates from his mother, who read her children R.L. Stevenson's adventure stories in the evenings. When Barrie was seven his brother David died in a skating accident. David had been the mother's favorite child, and she fell into depression. Barrie tried to gain her affection by dressing up in the dead boy's clothes. The obsessive relationship that grew between mother and son was to mark the whole of his life. After her death Barrie published in 1896 an adoring biography of his mother.
