A Few Notes on the Culture by Iain M Banks [Html mark-up by Stefan Kruger] Firstly, and most importantly: the Culture doesn't really exist. It's only a story. It only exists in my mind and the minds of the people who've read about it. That having been made clear: The Culture is a group-civilisation formed from seven or eight humanoid species, space-living elements of which established a loose federation approximately nine thousand years ago. The ships and habitats which formed the original alliance required each others' support to pursue and maintain their independence from the political power structures - principally those of mature nation-states and autonomous commercial concerns - they had evolved from. The galaxy (our galaxy) in the Culture stories is a place long lived-in, and scattered with a variety of life-forms. In its vast and complicated history it has seen waves of empires, federations, colonisations, die-backs, wars, species-specific dark ages, renaissances, periods of mega-structure building and destruction, and whole ages of benign indifference and malign neglect. At the time of the Culture stories, there are perhaps a few dozen major space-faring civilisations, hundreds of minor ones, tens of thousands of species who might develop space-travel, and an uncountable number who have been there, done that, and have either gone into locatable but insular retreats to contemplate who-knows-what, or disappeared from the normal universe altogether to cultivate lives even less comprehensible.

A little culture Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Banks leads something of a double life. Under the name Iain M. Banks he writes the best science fiction I've read in the last few years, while under the name Iain Banks he writes more general fiction. I hesitate to call his general work mainstream, as it's generally filled with the bizarre and perverse. I've read several of his "Iain Banks", not all of which have been to my taste. However, I've enjoyed the work of Iain M. Banks considerably. Most of Banks' science fiction takes place in the context of the Culture, an ancient space-faring civilization based on equality, non-violence, abundant robotic labor, super-intelligent artificial minds, and a desire to have as much fun as possible. The Culture must sometimes deal with other civilizations, however, and this task is given to the Culture's Contact group (Normal members of the Culture find Contact rather distasteful). And then, for those special, more dangerous contacts, there is Contact's Special Circumstances section.... The Culture novels include Excession The Player of Games Consider Phlebas Use of Weapons , and The State of the Art The Player of Games is a good starting point, as is

Cultured futurist Iain M. Banks creates an ornate utopia
By Nick Gevers ain Banks is one of Britain's most versatile and ambitious novelists, the recipient of an enviable combination of popular and critical acclaim. A restless experimenter, at home in a host of genres which he effortlessly hybridizes, he has, as Iain M. Banks, produced a stream of major SF novels. Pyrotechnic, action-filled, satiric, outlandish, deep and frivolous all at once, these bravura space operas and planetary romances juggle galactic scale, political argument and personal perspective with a revelatory energy rarely matched in speculative fiction. Banks' analyses are complex and at times heart-rending; the Culture's Contact Section and its Special Circumstances operatives, mirroring the CIA in disconcerting ways, are very far from infallible. Their adventures feature in Consider Phlebas The Player of Games The State of the Art Use of Weapons Excession Inversions (1998) and Look to Windward (2000). Two novels not concerning the Culture

Excession - Iain M Banks Banks is, without a doubt, one of the most awe-inspiring writers to have emerged on to the literary scene in the last 20 years. Adroitly straggling the fence between two great genres, he alternates between publishing delightfully odd fiction as Iain Banks and frighteningly grand science fiction as Iain M Banks. Excession is another romp into the world of his future civilisation, the Culture. The Culture is a pan-galactic society overseen by the benign paternal efforts of vast artificial intelligences called Minds. Guardianship by these Minds has ensured that humankind has rocketed beyond any problems of scarcity and disease and emerged into a hedonistic age where they can attain any mood they wish via the use of internal ‘drug glands’, never have to work, can change appearance or gender and enjoy an average lifespan of 400 years. This perfect, if rather uneventful, existence is offset by the antics of some rather less ‘enlightened’ species in the galaxy such as the Affront. This race of tentacledÜber-Klingons are highly aggressive party animals who view the Culture as a bunch of spineless do-gooders who they’d love to get an advantage over given half a chance. Into this background appears an ‘Out of Context’ problem, the Excession. An artefact billions of years old and of immeasurable power. It was last seen in a little used corner of space when a star mysteriously vanished, and now it has returned setting off alarm bells amongst the great ship Minds as well as thoughts of avarice from the Affront. The Culture’s aim is to try and make contact with this black body sphere, the Affront simply want to rape any technological knowledge they can to give them a power advantage in the galaxy.

Iain Banks came to widespread and controversial acclaim with the publication of his first novel, THE WASP FACTORY, in 1984. However, it was his 1987 novel CONSIDER PHLEBAS which introduced his remarkable talent to the SF community, and also saw the addition of the 'M' to his name - an addition which remains a distinguishing feature of his SF work. He has since written a further 5 SF novels, and a collection of SF short stories, THE STATE OF THE ART, all published by Orbit. Described by William Gibson as 'a phenomenon ... wildly successful, fearlessly creative', he was acknowledged as one of the Best of Young British Writers in 1993, and lives in Fife, Scotland.

    Consider Phlebas
    Iain M. Banks
Futura 1988 A book review by Danny Yee Consider Phlebas is the first of Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. It is space opera on the grand scale, set in the middle of an immense war between the Culture and the Idirans, but its plot revolves around a personal story. A Culture Mind has escaped an ambush and hidden itself on Schar's World, one of the forbidden Planets of the Dead; the Idirans send the Changer Horza, who has friends on a scientific station on the planet, to capture it. Among other adventures, Horza's journey involves him in battles with a mercenary band, an encounter with cannibalism, and participation in a high-stakes game of Damage on an Orbital about to be destroyed, before a final confrontation in the tunnels of Schar's World. The plot of Consider Phlebas sprawls in sometimes disconnected fashion and it is not the best of the Culture novels. As always, however, Banks offers an abundance of original and appealing ideas and tells a rattling good yarn. 16 March 1992

It was one of the less glorious incidents of a long-ago war. It led to the destruction of two suns and the billions of lives they supported. Now, 800 years later, the light from those first ancient deaths has reached the Culture's Orbital called Masaq'. For the Hub Mind, overseer of the massive bracelet world, its arrival is particularly poignant. But it still may be eclipsed by events from the cultures more recent past.
