T h e T T A R e v i e w THE INFLATABLE VOLUNTEER Steve Aylett
reviewed by Steven Dennett There's an amusing review of Steve Aylett's short story collection Toxicology on amazon.com, which says in two lines that it's complete crap. No argument or anything. Not surprisingly, no one has recorded this review as 'useful' on their little voting pad - apart from me, because I have sympathy for the guy: Aylett's violent writing provokes reaction rather than informed discourse. The reviewer even left his e-mail address; I admire his bravery, but I fear for his hard drive. Aylett's new spume of nonsense, The Inflatable Volunteer , is another cut-up festival of perpetual thuggery. Narrative development and characterisation are jettisoned in favour of surface-sweeps of hallucinogenic mini-scenes. Rather pathetically, in the face of the lack of plot the publicity blurb ends with: 'anything can happen and does, all the time'. One suspects a collectively dismayed throwing up of hands around the Phoenix House typewriter. But who blames them? Basically, there's a bloke called Eddie, and everyone's some kind of hoodlum, and there are loads of insects and bones being splintered, and raw guts. Etcetera. Aylett is the boy jester. Knowingly puerile, he's at his best when he's wrily sending up his whole enterprise. Like Stewart Home, or Turner Prize winners, if you take him seriously you end up looking stupid. He'll always be one jump away from whatever a critic could carp about. (Story? Wake up, Grandad, it's Y2K.) For the post-Burroughs avant-pulpsters, it's all about the repeatedly unsettling experience of the writing rather than olde worlde stuff like connection and emotion. Aylett's world is substanceless noir; his packaging is glossy and druggy, and his metaphors are built for laughs, not swoons. Fizz and splutter, sound and fury, and a wealth of clever, funny lines - but it signifies nothing more than a party balloon in a queasy student's kitchen. Which is the whole point.

The Velocity Gospel
The Velocity Gospel (2002) Steve Aylett, Gollancz, £9.99, pbk, 131pp, ISBN 0-57507-088-9 This is the second in the Accomplice series (there will be two further volumes: Dummyland and Karloff's Circus ) starring Barney Juno, who "lives only to care for the winged and stepping animals of the Earth". The demon Sweeney, having failed to ruin Barney's life through his agent Dietrich Hammerwire, despatches a minor demon, Kermit Skittermite, to aggravate Barney unto death. But Barney's quite aggravated enough as it is, trying to ditch his unwanted girlfriend Magenta Blaze so that he can be with his preferred choice, Chloe Low. Meanwhile the absolute bastard Mayor Rudloe is plagued by the Followers of Cyril, who is at least semi-fictional until Prancer Diego writes a manifesto for him and uses Skittermite's image to make him seem real. Hammerwire knows Skittermite's out of his depth, but remains out of favour with Sweeney... Rejoin Barney, Edgy, Gregor and co for more surrealistic romps in the highly improbable town of Accomplice; you know it makes sense. Or doesn't, as the case may be... The hugely talented Steve Aylett continues to bamboozle and enthrall with his sick and twisted humour though, reportedly, is a little disappointed with this installment (put it down to being a perfectionist) but looks forward gleefully to volume four

Only an Alligator
(2001) Steve Aylett, Gollancz, £9.99, pbk, 133pp, ISBN 0-57506-906-6 Barny Juno, after accidentally entering the creepchannel, rescues an alligator. But the devil, Sweeney, considers the alligator his property and sets the demon Dietrich Hammerwire on Barny. The citizens of Accomplice already fear Barny somewhat, due to the menagerie he keeps at his house, so when he becomes a political football during the mayoral election between Mayor Rudloe and Doomed Eddie Gallo nobody is surprised. Can Barny's friends Edgy and Gregor help, or perhaps the philosophies of Violaine? Is the moral fibre under attack, or has everybody forgotten about it, or is it turning into pasta? Will anything be solved before the big parade, or is Accomplice doomed to confusion forever? Is the mayor so corrupt that he will never get rid of his floor lobsters? And what's going on out at the Swamp of Eternal Enmity/Degradation? More surreal fun from the excellent Steve Aylett whose prose reads like codes and anagrams. Steve put the 'play' in wordplay while savaging his story into shape, spewing zombies, statues and moths who are willing to be kissed on the head. The bewildered Barny staggers through several attempts on his life, surviving through stupidity alone, drawing the reader along with etheric chains and something sticky. Not recommended for the weak minded, but should be sought after by lovers of Joyce, Jeff Noon, and Kurt Vonnegut. I can't wait to return to Accomplice...

The Crime Studio Beerlight, the city of all our futures, is not a safe place. Crime - occasionally sophisticated, normally violent, always hilarious in its unintended effects - is the motor of the city's economy. Weaponry, rather than fast cars or designer clothes, is the ultimate status symbol. The cast of hoodlums includes burglar extraordinaire Billy Panacea, Kicker Charlie the casino owner, conman cum lawyer Harpoon Specter, Henry Blince the donut obsessed Chief of Police, Getty Hundred Ram the unwitting bank robber and other fun loving felons who hang out at the Delayed Reaction Bar on Valentine Street. Uncle Burst's belief that his face is made of pasta is one of the milder notions with which he regales the family. Uncle Snapper is confined to a treehouse because of the uncontrollable urges he feels once is gun is loaded. Uncle Blute drowned in the lake at the wheel of his Morris Traveller, where he remains perfectly preserved. And Nanny Jack refuses all efforts to bury her and strikes terror into her relatives' hearts as she abandons yet another final resting place.

He spent some time working in a book warehouse, and then on to trade and publishing law - where he invented the concept of 'fractal litigation', whereby the flapping of a butterfly's wings on one side of the world results in a massive compensation claim on the other. Steve Aylett - Only an Alligator
(Originally published in Vector , May 2002) This slim volume is subtitled `Accomplice Book 1' - yep, it's the first volume in a series. Accomplice is a tropical city republic that sits over an underworld populated by demons. Barry, friend of animals, enters one of the `demonic transit tunnels' and rescues an alligator which annoys, and earns the enmity, of the demon Sweeny. A simple overview (plus a look at the map at the front) would make Alligator sound rather like Pedido Street Station That said, some of it is pretty funny - Aylett has a way with the one-liner - but it's damn hard work to mine the gems from the gaudy dross. In some ways Aylett reminds me of the writer in the film Wonderboys - instead of writer's block he has the opposite and cannot throw any idea out, everything has to be included. On page thirteen one of the characters comments: "`I don't know how to write a book'" Too true, Steve, too true. Home Reviews

I wonder how many Steve Aylett books you need to read before you go barking mad? I mean this is my fifth and I've got another two lined up for reading. Though at just over 100 pages Atom is a pretty quick read, as is Bigot Hall which I followed Atom with and am already half way through. Anyway for those that haven't read Aylett or one of my reviews of Aylett's work it should be pointed out that he is a potent writer - free flowing stream of conscious simulated dialogues, walking a fine line between absurdist humour and semi-complete nonsense. Maintaining certain benchmarks of what mode Aylett is in can be useful - taking The Inflatable Volunteer as a constant of absurd and Shamanspace as the most coherent of his work to date. On that scale Atom is towards TIV but isn't quite as extreme, a manageable plot and flow being possible to summarise after reading the book. Though plot is a tangible idea, one which on the whole Aylett has a tendency to neglect, wandering off on diversions and desperately padding out. The plot in Atom's case is that a brain has been stolen from Beerlight's brain factory - labelled as that of Tony Curtis but actually formerly residing in the skull of Franz Kafka. Beerlight

NICE THINGS TO READ IN THE SUMMER TIME So, if you were to ask us, here are some of the books we'd recommend for effective summer reading.
And we should know. We're professionals. JAMES: I don't quite know how to pick my fave J.G. Ballard narrative; it's a bit like having to pick your favorite Philip K. Dick story, without having to deal with so much insanity. Ballard is in some ways the most sane writer that sci fi has ever seen; the craziness in his stories is the craziness of the poat-modern world. The best? Well, there'e the amazing take on old school disaster porn, The Wind From Nowhere , or the clinical dissection of the Media World in The Atrocity Exhibition , but my personal best is the pointless quest to untangle an Earth drowned in Water in a Universe set free in time.....

Don't ask what the point of this page really is - it merely satisfies the possessor of a somewhat unusual family name to see a number of them in print at once. I've stuck to the UK, though there are various Ayletts in Oz and Canada on the web. As I haven't checked with all the people below on whether they would want their email address exposed to the outside world like this, I have only put in pointers to Ayletts with web pages. Ayletts who only have an email may be mentioned but their email is not given - if you really want to get in touch with any of them, you'll have to get in touch with me first. If anyone on this page objects, just email me and I'll remove you. And if I've got it wrong , let me know what I should have said.
