Augustine of Hippo: A Biography
An Updated Classic
Augustine of Hippo: A Biography . A New Edition with an Epilogue. By Peter Brown. University of California Press. 576 pp. $19.95. Reviewed by Robert Louis Wilken My worn and heavily marked copy of the original hardback edition of Peter Brown’s biography of St. Augustine, its binding held together by sturdy book tape, sits on a bookshelf close to my desk as it has since it first appeared in 1967. On the inside cover I have a little note, “Reviewed in Christian Century 1968,” and at the rear a list of words and phrases with page numbers that caught my attention when I first read it. Now there sits beside it a shiny new edition, this one a classy paperback with a reproduction of the Vision of St. Augustine by Vittorio Carpaccio (1460–1523) on its cover. The man who wrote the original work was a promising young scholar in his early thirties at All Soul’s College at Oxford; the person who issues the new edition is Rollins Professor of History at Princeton, the most renowned student of Augustine in the world, and one of the most respected historians of the religious history of the later Roman Empire. The text of the biography remains the same, but Brown has added two lengthy epilogues, the first entitled “New Evidences,” the second “New Directions.” Like the book itself they are wise, engaging, and perceptive, written in the sparkling and graceful prose that Brown seems to produce so effortlessly.

Date: Sat Oct 05 2002 - 12:27:22 EDT At the end of his Vita Sancti Martini Venantius Fortunatus invites his readers to visit a series of place in Italy and Gallia where important Saints are venerated and he mentions (vv. 656/665) Iulia Concordia , a little town nearby Aquileia. Here - Venantius says - "Augustinus adest pretiosus Basiliusque" . According to S. Quesnel ( "Vie de Saint Martin" , Les Belles Lettres, Paris, 1996) local Saints bearing the name of Augustine and Basyl could not be identified in the Acta Sanctorum , so that we have to identify them in Augustine of Hippo and Basyl of Caesarea. Basyl was venerated in Bologna and the cult of Augustine spread outside Northern Africa since the end of the Vth century. I would like to know more about the diffusion of the cult of them both in Northern Itay and in the Western Mediterranean. Could you help me? Many thanks in advance, Yuri A. Marano

By setting Augustine in his time and place he effecively traces the impacts on Augustine's life, which profoundly affect his doctrines. Make no mistake, Brown is writing an acedemic history, not hagiography. The reader should expect a thorough discussion of history, philosophy and or course religion. The evenhanded nature of the work and its beautiful style are a lesson for all other writers of religious biography. A Superb Biography, by fermed

http://www.scs.sk.ca/aug/pages/saintaug.html
Saint Augustine St. Augustine of Hippo is the patron of brewers because of his conversion from a former life of loose living, which included parties, entertainment, and worldly ambitions. His complete turnaround and conversion has been an inspiration to many who struggle with a particular vice or habit they long to break. This famous son of St. Monica was born in Africa and spent many years of his life in wicked living and in false beliefs. Though he was one of the most intelligent men who ever lived and though he had been brought up a Christian, his sins of impurity and his pride darkened his mind so much, that he could not see or understand the Divine Truth anymore. Through the prayers of his holy mother and the marvelous preaching of St. Ambrose, Augustine finally became convinced that Christianity was the one true religion. Yet he did not become a Christian then, because he thought he could never live a pure life. One day, however, he heard about two men who had suddenly been converted on reading the life of St. Antony, and he felt terrible ashamed of himself. "What are we doing?" he cried to his friend Alipius. "Unlearned people are taking Heaven by force, while we, with all our knowledge, are so cowardly that we keep rolling around in the mud of our sins!" Full of bitter sorrow, Augustine flung himself out into the garden and cried out to God, "How long more, O Lord? Why does not this hour put an end to my sins?" Just then he heard a child singing, "Take up and read!" Thinking that God intended him to hear those words, he picked up the book of the Letters of St. Paul, and read the first passage his gaze fell on. It was just what Augustine needed, for in it, St. Paul says to put away all impurity and to live in imitation of Jesus. That did it! From then on, Augustine began a new life.

St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430)
St. Augustine was a philosopher and theologian who lived from 354 to 430 in North Africa. Rather than bore you with a detailed biography (which I wouldn't do justice anyway), I thought I'd just explain why his image decorates my webpage. Augustine authored many works, including the famous City of God , which had a tremendous impact on Western thought and Christian theology. He played a significant role in refuting many of the heresies which confronted the early Church. Yet, in his autobiographical work, Confessions , we see a side of Augustine that is refreshingly honest on a personal level. He shares with the reader the internal struggles he faced during his conversion process. The Confessions is one of my favorite books of all time. Here are several quotations from the book which, I hope, demonstrate why:
"There is no pleasure in eating and drinking unless it is preceded by the discomfort of hunger and thirst...It always the case that the greater the joy, the greater is the pain which precedes it."
- Book VIII, ch. iii

75. St. Augustine Of Hippo's "On Patience"

http://www.episcopalnet.org/READINGS/Hippo/Patience.html
St. Augustine of Hippo's
On Patience [De Patientia]
5. When therefore thou shall see any man suffer aught patiently, do not straightway praise it as patience; for this is only shown by the cause of suffering. When it is a good cause, then is it true patience: when that is not polluted by lust, then is this distinguished from falsity. But when that is placed in crime, then is this much misplaced in name. For not just as all who know are partakers of knowledge, just so are all who suffer partakers of patience: but they which rightly use the suffering, these in verity of patience are praised, these with the prize of patience are crowned. 20. Let thus much have been said with regard to charity, without which in us there cannot be true patience, because in good men it is the love of God which endureth all things, as in bad men the lust of the world. But this love is in us by the Holy Spirit which was given us. Whence, of Whom cometh in us love, of Him cometh patience. But the lust of the world, when it patiently bears the burdens of any manner of calamity, boasts of the strength of its own will, like as of the stupor of disease, not robustness of health. This boasting is insane: it is not the language of patience, but of dotage. A will like this in that degree seems more patient of bitter ills, in which it is more greedy of temporal good things, because more empty of eternal.

No book except the Bible itself had a greater influence on the Middle Ages than Augustine's The City of God. And since medieval Europe was the cradle of modern Western society, this work is vital for understanding our world and how it came into being. Augustine's influence was profound on Luther and Calvin in their formulation of the protestant reformation. The wisdom of this great man penetrates through every page. Alas for our generation to come to know this great wisdom but be humbled by our own inability to imitate.

St.Augustine of Hippo
Woodland Road, St Austell, PL25 4R, Cornwall Visit our website There is a record of the Bishop of St. Pol de Leon, Brittany, finding shelter in a Catholic house in St. Austell in May 1802. He had escaped from the French Revolution, and spent 72 hours in an open boat before drifting into Penzance harbour! Catholic directories from 1857 mention Mass being said here at intervals by clergy travelling from Bodmin or Plymouth, Sclerder or Lanherne, Liskeard, Camborne or Par. The history of the Parish possibly dates from 1911 when a Sunday Mass centre was inaugurated in East Hill, St. Austell, above a painter and decorator’s workshop. In 1918 the Prior of Bodmin asked the Catholic Missionary Society to come to Cornwall. Their visit prompted the establishment of a permanent Chapel in St. Austell. The Dowager Lady Bute donated one hundred pounds for the cost of the site in Ranelagh Road. Twenty four years later, on 25th

@import url(js/rom.css); [ CONTENTS ] AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO, THE SOURCE OF THE HUMOROUS ERRORS OF THE PAPACY, OF PROTESTANTISM AND OF BARLAAM THE CALABRIAN. © John S. Romanides Although both the Papacy and the Protestants have theologically associated both Saints Ambrose and Jerome with Augustine, the latter has no theological relation with the former. Both Ambrose and Jerome belong to the tradition of the Roman Ecumenical Councils. However, Augustine is the unique source of the humorous errors of Barlaam the Calabrian who was accused of heresy by St. Gregory Palamas and was condemned as a heretic by the Councils of Constantinople New Rome held in 1341, 1347 and 1351 for his teaching that God reveals his will to humans by means of creatures which He brings into existence to be seen and heard and which He passes back into non existence when the revelations have been accomplished. Such revelations have been supposedly recorded in the Bible because preserved by the Biblical writers. This nonsense cannot be termed a heresy since it is too stupid. In any case these positions of Augustine have remained the backbone of both Protestantism and the Papacy.
