Violence, pollution, financial decline, overcrowding, and a host of seemingly insurmountable problems will wipe out life on Earth, if not take the Earth with it. At least, there are some people who are willing to fight to save what is left. In upper Canada, Project: Maldon is the focus of one such group. The Skellig Michael Institute is an organization committed to preventing the final collapse. If anyone can do it the Institute seems the most likely choice; they have bottomless resources, the best-trained personnel ever gathered, and the guidance of the world's most advanced artificial intelligence. With the computer brain of "Helen" to guide them, and a single-minded purpose pounded into them, certainly the Institute is the most likely to succeed in this impossible assignment. That is, if everyone at the Institute has the same goal in mind. Edward Wolfe, director of Project: Maldon, isn't so sure anymore that Helen has the same measure of success in mind. Northern Stage Rally Championship Bulletin 9 – September 2002 Well finally I managed to get out and compete on a couple of rounds of this year’s championship – not that it should trouble anyone – after retiring with a broken cross member on the Sea King Stages and finishing last in class after a catalogue of problems on the Lindisfarne I can lay claim to joint 39 th overall! At Leconfield we were one of a few crews to fall foul of the (fast becoming) infamous jump. North Humberside MC attracted nearly 100 crews for the Sea King Stages with 26 contenders amongst them. Chris "I don’t like tarmac" Leeming put in yet another impressive performance finishing 3 rd in class and 10 th overall. This now allows Chris to drop his only non-finish of the year and count eight impressive scores giving him a huge lead at the head of the driver’s championship. The entry for the Lindisfarne was very disappointing – after John Bogie and David Paterson had to withdraw due to John feeling unwell it left only two crews and me competing for championship points. Fred Davison and Bubba Barber ended the event in a ditch leaving Jonathan and David Atack to pick up the best championship points of 75 after finishing 3rd in class. After these two events Chris Leeming retains his healthy lead with Stuart Ellis and Stephen Oade filling the provisional podium positions. Rob Ellis leads the Navigators table from Raymond Guy and Tim Croft.

Tori New vnew@usc.edu PROJECT MALDON ’S POLITICAL PARABLES In the wake of the upcoming presidential election, the novel Project Maldon can be viewed as a cautionary tale of the perils of social engineering and of ruling by bureaucracy. Chris Atack’s novel, which is set twenty-seven years in the future, tells the story of an Earth whose population is controlled by the Artificial Intelligence entity Helen and her agenda of Sociocybernetics, a program which is able to project likely outcomes of global events and is implemented based on those projections. Through his descriptions of three factions of society, the dependent Listers, the radically religious Accord, and the AI Helen’s Skellig Michael Institute, Atack delivers a commentary on and a warning against imposing a will on individuals as an excuse to serve the supposed greater good. The origin of the Listers in the novel seems to parallel current populations of people who receive entitlement programs. The Listers receive social and monetary assistance from their government, a help that ultimately renders them completely dependent on the government of Upper Canada for their survival. Families and relations had come to depend on this right, and when the government, through the recommendation of the Institute, takes the entitlement away, the Listers become violent, black market merchants or new subscribers to the religion of the Accord.

January 1984 In 1978, after developing NED, LRH became very ill. David Mayo was flown in from Flag, and audited LRH to recovery. From his cognitions, LRH, with David's help, constructed the NOTs rundown. The first NOTs issues came down in September 1978. David Mayo was posted as Senior C/S Int in October, and Merrill Mayo was called from Flag to become part of the Snr C/S Int office. The new Snr C/S Int office was at Gilman Hot Springs, a holiday resort purchased by the Church, encompassing some 500 acres. Gilman is between Beaumont and Hemet in Riverside County, California. Gilman was the base for the Commodore's Messengers Organization International (CMO Int), and for CLIO Special Unit (who made the Tech films), and for CMO Gold (Golden Era Studios). It is here that the Tech films were made. At this time, LRH lived in an apartment in Hemet. In 1980, due to pressing legal matters, LRH went into hiding. He simply disappeared with the Messenger who was on duty at the time - Ann Broeker. This was to be a relatively short cycle, but possibly due to an exaggeration of the legal situation being fed to LRH, LRH has been in a secret location from that time. Ann's husband, Pat Broeker, was used to relay data to and from LRH. LRH has stayed fairly close to Gilman.
