Also accompanying the Astors was Mrs Astor's private nurse Miss Caroline Louise Endres After the accident Colonel Astor left his suite to investigate, he quickly returned and reported to Madeleine that the ship had struck ice. He reassured her that the damage did not appear serious. Later as they waited on the boat deck , Mrs Astor lent Leah Aks her shawl to keep her son Filly warm. At one point the Astors retired to the gymnasium and sat on the mechanical horses. They wore their lifebelts but Colonel Astor had found another and cut the lining with a pen knife to show his wife what it was made of. Colonel and Mrs Astor later moved down to A-Deck from where Mrs Astor boarded lifeboat 4 aided by her husband and Second Officer Charles Lightoller Madeleine inherited from her husband the income from a five-million-dollar trust fund and the use of his home on Fifth Avenue and in the Newport so long as she did not marry. Walldorf, near Heidelberg, Germany. At the age of 16 he went to England, and five years later, in 1784, he arrived in Baltimore, penniless. He later went to New York City, where in a few years he entered into business with a small shop for trade in musical instruments and furs. Shrewdness, driving ambition, and stolid concentration brought him to a commanding position in the burgeoning economy of the United States. He became a leader of the China trade and was an astute investor in lands, principally in and around New York City, but he is perhaps best remembered as a fur trader. He chartered the American Fur Company Astoria , Oregon) and the South West Company (operating around the Great Lakes). His firm exercised a virtual monopoly of the trade in U.S. territories in the 1820s and still did when he retired from it in 1834. Astor, John Jacob (b. July 17, 1763, Waldorf, Ger.d. March 29, 1848, New York City), fur magnate and founder of a renowned family of Anglo-American capitalists, business leaders, and philanthropists. His American Fur Company is considered the first U.S. business monopoly. Astor started a fur-goods shop in New York City about 1786 after learning about the fur trade while aboard the ship that brought him to the U.S. Benefitting from a treaty between England and the U.S. (1794) that opened up new markets in Canada and the Great Lakes region, and from shrewd dealings with Indian tribes, he had by 1800 amassed $250,000 and become the leading figure in the fur trade. Given permission to trade in ports monopolized by the British East India Company, he made lucrative fur transactions in China (1800-17), but his plan to establish a network of fur-trading posts around Astoria (now in Oregon) failed when the British captured the post during the War of 1812. At the same time, however, Astor invested in New York City real estate that became the foundation of the family fortune. His son, William Backhouse Astor (1792-1875), greatly expanded the family real estate holdings, building more than 700 stores and dwellings in New York City. The wealthiest person in the U.S. at the time of his death, the senior Astor bequeathed $400,000 for the founding of a public library, the Astor Library, in New York City, which was consolidated with others as the New York Public Library in 1895.

TITANIC John Jacob and Madeleine Astor With a net worth well over 87 million dollars, John Astor the fourth was without a doubt the richest man aboard the Titanic. Backed by a powerful family fortune made from fur trading, Astor had made millions of his own investing in real estate. He also held patents on a number of items of his own invention, including an improved bicycle brake, and a turbine engine. Astor led a fairly remarkable life. During the Spanish American war, Astor financed his own battalion. Before the war, he wrote a science fiction novel about life on other planets. He also invented a "vibratory disintegrator", which supposedly produced some sort of gas from peat moss.
(peat moss produces trace gasses on its own, but they didn't know that in 1912) He boarded the ship with his wife, ( 19 and pregnant at the time, and her age was quite a point of conversation with other first class passengers) , a maid, a manservant, a personal nurse, and a dog, and his staterooms were without equal.
With working fireplaces, and adjoining quarters for servants, the suites cost $4,000.00, an amount that equals $50,000.00 in today's dollars.
