Interview: Catherine Asaro
By J. Alexander Harman
C atherine Asaro is the author of Primary Inversion Catch the Lightning The Last Hawk The Radiant Seas ... The Veiled Web and Ascendant Sun as well as the forthcoming The Phoenix Code and The Quantum Rose (part of which was serialized in the May-July 1999 issues of Analog ). She has also had several shorter works published in Analog , including the Hugo-nominated novella "Aurora in Four Voices". Dr. Asaro (she holds a Ph.D. in physics) has a gift for creating plausible scientific explanations for such seemingly unlikely phenomena as faster-than-light travel and telepathy. I first became aware of her work after it was recommended to me by my friend (and Strange Horizons Editor-in-Chief) Mary Anne Mohanraj; I picked up Primary Inversion, and I've been hooked on Catherine's books ever since. Although her writing is considered 'hard' SF, with detailed and plausible explanations of the physics behind the technologies she describes, it's also character-driven. Each of her books centers on a love story between two well-developed (and usually very different) characters, and her writing has earned rave reviews in The Romantic Times as well as Analog and Asimov's.

headlong
When I received a review copy of Catch the Lightning , physicist Catherine Asaro's second take on the Skolian Empire, I was already predisposed to enjoy it. I knew I'd have to be very careful not to allow my feeling for the earlier book to have undue influence over my reaction to this one (I went on record raving about her first novel, Primary Inversion Therefore I'm glad to say that I'm honestly able to praise Catch the Lightning , with only a few faint damns here and there. I've already read it twice, in fact. I will admit that Asaro's particular brand of exuberant neo-Campbellian super-science fiction didn't seem quite as fresh as it did when I found Primary Inversion . But the novel suffers only slightly from the symptoms of sophomore slump, and that mainly in comparison with its action-packed predecessor. Her prose still carries a healthy dose of the headlong sense of wonder for which I started reading sf lo these many years ago, and she doesn't let her background as a physicist get in the way of a good story. If you read and enjoyed Campbell's own series of Arcot, Wade and Morey stories, for instance, then you surely ought to give Asaro's books a try. Asaro's milieu is not a mere nostalgic reconstruction of pulp from the 1930s, however; she is able to bring in elements of more modern sf (sex, for one!) without breaking the charm she begins weaving from the first scene of

at long last
I'm well aware this review is horribly belated. I read The Last Hawk when it came out in hardback, and now even its paperback release has been out for quite some time. This sorry state of affairs is entirely due to my own procrastination - Asaro's novel is a captivating read. Some details a few paragraphs below might be considered SPOILERS for The Last Hawk ; I don't think so myself but if you don't like to know any thing about a book before you start it you should skip this review. Also, this review contains some comments about Anne McCaffrey's newer book Nimisha's Ship , in which that work suffers by comparison with Asaro's - rabid McCaffrey fans will want to skip this, rather than waste time trying to change my mind about it. Otherwise, please press on... IF an sf writer is going to build a successful universe in which to set stories - I'm not for a moment suggesting that this is the only way to be a good sf writer, but it's certainly one good way - then it helps to build your universe well from the very beginning. Construct a milieu large enough to hold more tales than any one person could possibly write, but confine each individual vision to a comprehensible human scale - no ten-page lists of dramatis personae , please. Place stories in their settings as if they were sonic sculptures, near enough to harmonize but not so close together that they interfere or become cloying. Allow the details that define your universe to emerge from the background in their own time, as much as possible, rather than thrusting them in the readers' faces. And avoid getting

Propped against the bookcase in Catherine Asaro's second-story home office in Columbia, Maryland is the framed diploma for her Harvard Ph.D. in chemical physics. Dangling from the doorknob, is the bag stuffed with the leotards the attractive brunette wears during the weekly ballet class she manages to squeeze into her demanding schedule. With her years of experience as a classical dancer, Catherine has also taught that class at Caryl Maxwell Classical Ballet. But as a respected scientist, CEO of her own firm - Molecudyne Research - and author of several highly acclaimed novels, the versatile California native has little time for the ballet barre these days. Instead, she's fielding offers to speak at prestigious scientific gatherings and meeting deadlines for novels contracted by two New York publishers. But what distinguishes Catherine from others who draw on their backgrounds to write commercial fiction is that her novels earn accolades and awards from such disparate reading communities as science fiction, romance, suspense and action-adventure. Her audience is equally split between men and women. She is truly a fresh new voice on the literary landscape with the blockbuster potential of Diana Gabaldon.

The Veiled Web
(Bantam/Spectra, 1999)
The latest from this veteran SF writer is a blend of cyber-intrigue, Moroccan setting and romance with a strong ballet component drawn directly from the author's personal experience adding to the book's background versimilitude and emotional resonance. In the summer of 2010, Web-surfing ballerina Lucia del Mar meets Rashid al Jazarr, the attractive inventor of a cutting-edge artificial intelligence system. Lucia and Rashid are kidnapped by international terrorists who covet his invention with the goal of using it for world domination through mind control by means of the device's powerful VR capabilities. While the protagonist couple manage to foil the abductors, in order to keep Lucia safe when they land in Morocco, Rashid arranges a hasty marriage. Cloistered in Rashid's traditional Islamic home, Lucia overcomes her loneliness by befriending both Rashid's vivid and colorful family and Zaki, the uncannily human computer program Rashid has designed. When the terrorists strike again, Rashid's AI system is destroyed, but the unlikely marriage survives in this gripping yarn containing edifying subtexts dealing with millenial issues; with promoting cross-cultural tolerance and understanding; and with the potential and dangers of AI and VR, especially if they are combined.

You've seen me post her name before ... probably too much, I guess.
I've been touting Ms. Asaro as the next "good thing" in SF authordom. Maybe the next Lois McMaster Bujold, for all you Vor fans. (Okay, that's reaching a bit, I guess.)
Asaro is one of the first voices to mix romance with hard SF, and to include more than a dash of military SF. She's a physicist by trade.
Okay, well now you don't have to take my word for it.
She's reached the final Nebula ballot this year. Twice.
She's on for best novel and best short story. The short story is available online ... I've posted the link on this site before.
Her recent novel, The Quantum Rose, is now widely available in paperback. Her latest, Spherical Harmonic, is only available in hardback.

If ancient animosities are finally laid to rest, will new ones take their place?
I Silver Tide Holoscreens covered the surface of the kilometer-wide dome that formed the bridge. Right now they showed the planet Athena, a gas giant banded by blue and red clouds, glowing against the spangled backdrop of space. The view to starboard lifted her spirits. It came from a satellite orbiting Athena and showed her ship, Silver Tide, a scientific research facility. The vessel glistened, a rotating cylinder several kilometers long. Lights sparkled along its body, on antennae, pods, struts, and towers. Jess always got a kick out of watching Silver Tide from within the ship. She had never lost the awe she felt that first time she boarded, coming to assume her command. In the five years since, Silver Tide had become part of her. Her stomach interrupted her enjoyment with an unwelcome lurch. Trying to divert her thoughts, she magnified the screen images. Now they revealed a small spacecraft on approach, a Bolt transport. On Silver Tide

Primary Inversion
by Catherine Asaro
Primary Inversion , Catherine Asaro's debut novel, is a difficult book to pigeonhole with a few pithy sentences. This is not because it's particularly original, but because the author has thrown together elements from many other science fiction books and stirred vigorously. I enjoyed the resulting story tremendously. Sauscony Valdoria is a bio-mechanically enhanced supersoldier, an elite space fighter pilot, one of the most powerful telepaths in the galaxy, and the potential heir to the vast interstellar Skolian Empire. The Skolian Empire is at war with the evil sadistic slave-trading Trader Aristos, so it's a bit of a shock to Sauscony when she falls in love with the heir to the Trader Empire. The bad guys all seem to be graduates of the Mercedes Lackey School of Ruthless Villainy, but the good guys display a wider range of moral shades. Sympathetic characters, decent writing, and reasonably plausible science save this book from its own cliches. I wasn't entirely satisfied with the conclusion, which leaves numerous loose ends. I expect that there will be a sequel, and I look forward to it, but I wish Asaro had tied up this book a little more cleanly.
