Alfred A. Knopf, Canada
Gail Anderson-Dargatz's beautiful new novel is saturated with bee lore, rich domestic detail, wondrous imagery culled from rural kitchens and gardens, and shining insights into family and friendship. And at its heart is the life, death and resurrection of an extraordinary marriage.
Staff Review:
Dargatz has, again, woven a grassroots tale - the wonderful story of an aging woman who has patiently built a life for herself seasoned by love. Although she is poor, Augusta has an openess to life which she continuously lives responsively. She asks to be sexually happy, choosing a man as a best friend. She strives to find meaningful work and bears a child on her own terms.
Anderson-Dargatz demonstrates a gift that outweighs her craft - she is hopelessly in love with and attentive to her characters and the natural world. The many encounters in both her novels of the supernatural indicate no distinction between phenomena and nature.
A must-read; especially for those who've already digested "A Cure for Death by Lightening".

The Cure for Death by Lightning

B eth Weeks is fifteen and about to come of age abruptly. Something unknown is roaring for her, tracking her out in the bush around her family's farm on the southern end of the Fraser Plateau in central British Columbia. She hears it moving through the grass; she can't see it except for footprints that appear then disappear; sometimes she sees a trail of blood. This fear has risen up just as her life has become unstable. Her father has turned violent and unpredictable. Because of her father's public outbursts, her family is now shunned by the town. Her brother Dan is anxious to leave their father behind and enlist in the army to fight that "scary little clown" Hitler. A classmate has been killed in a grisly animal attack. And the local hermit, Coyote Jack, is watching her surreptitiously.
Can Beth hunt down her fear before it brings her to ground? Can she find her way in the midst of her family's collapse? Those are the bones of the story that Gail Anderson-Dargatz of Vancouver Island, B.C. tells in her fine first novel

BOOKS
by Diane Dechief Losing your faith can be a good thing. Gail Anderson-Dargatz tells us so in her third major work, A Rhinestone Button, a novel about faith and mystic experience. Job’s considered a little funny for an Alberta beef-lovin’ cattle farmer – not only does he bake really well and sport a head of angelic blond curls, he also experiences sounds in vivid color, a marvel termed "synaesthesia." "I went to a lot of events and they made me laugh. At the same time I saw how powerful they were. They offer a tremendously emotional experience that can do wonders for community building. It certainly has its downside, but I understand its appeal." Although Godsfinger is a fictionalized community, Anderson-Dargatz believes in leaving place names as they are. To her, changing names of towns and events, especially if it is to remove traces of Canada in order to sell books to a broader (American) market, is wrongheaded. A Rhinestone Button is firmly situated in Alberta, with Job heading to Edmonton's Bonnie Doon Mall to evangelize, and then on to the Commerical Hotel when he's too shy to talk to strangers about their faith. Gail Anderson-Dargatz Gail Anderson-Dargatz grew up in Salmon Arm, B.C. and earned a BA in creative writing. Her first book, The Miss Hereford Stories , was published in 1994 and was short-listed for the Leacock Award for Humour. Her best-selling novel The Cure for Death By Lightning has been nominated for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, The Van City Book Award and the Betty Trask Prize for best novel by an author under 35. The book was also short-listed for the Giller Prize and the Chapters/Books in Canada First Novel Award. It is based on a story that won first prize in the CBC National Literary Competition in 1993. Her long awaited second novel, A Recipe For Bees was nominated for the 1998 Giller Prize. The story backtracks through the life of main character Augusta and her family, as they struggle for land, love, and ultimately, life. In the winter, Anderson-Dargatz lives with her husband Floyd on a farm on Vancouver Island. In the summer they reside on a farm near Edmonton, Alta. When she is not helping with the chores, Gail writes full-time. Read an interview Anderson-Dargatz had with The Book Reporter.

By Gail Anderson Dargatz

Anderson-Dargatz was born in 1963 and grew up in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. Her mother, who also wrote, instilled literary confidence in her and by the age of eighteen, she knew she wanted to be the next Margaret Laurence, writing about Canadian farming women. In her early twenties, the future author got a job as a reporter for the Salmon Arm Observer, but continued to enter her fiction in competitions. One submission caught the attention of writer and teacher Jack Hodgins, who encouraged her to enrol in his course at the University of Victoria. She graduated from there with a B.A. in creative writing.
The first major success of her literary career came when she won first prize in the CBC Literary Competition for a story that would later become part of her first novel. When a Toronto literary agent took her on she already had a short story collection ready to go: The Miss Hereford Stories. Set in the 1960s in the fictional town of Likely, Alberta, the book, with its cast of colourful eccentrics, was published in 1994 and was nominated for the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour.
