An Interview with Dorothy Allison
This interview was conducted as part of the annual Zale Writer in Residence Program at the Newcomb College Center for Research on Women at Tulane University in November 1995. This year the program committee had invited award-winning novelist Dorothy Allison, who is most famous for her novel Bastard Out of Carolina , to be the Zale Writer-in-Residence. Dorothy Allison's work is securely located on the borders of southern and working-class literature, with deep roots in feminist and lesbian-feminist activism and politics.
Dorothy Allison is the author five books of fiction, poetry and non-fiction and the winner of numerous literary awards. She grew up in Greenville, South Carolina and Florida and now lives with her partner, son, and dogs in northern California.
This interview was conducted by Susanne Dietzel, a Visiting Scholar at the Newcomb College Center for Research on Women and doctoral candidate in American Studies and Feminist Studies at the University of Minnesota. She is now a Visiting Assistant Professor of Women's Studies at Tulane University. This interview was transcribed by Kelly Donald and Michelle Attebury, and (only slightly) edited by Susanne Dietzel.

CAVEDWELLER
by Dorothy Allison INTRODUCTION
The Village Voice has called her "a hell of a writer-tough and loose, clear and compassionate." George Garrett, author and critic who reviewed Bastard Out of Carolina for The New York Times Book Review wanted to "blow a bugle to alert the reading public that a major new talent has arrived." Critics have likened her to William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor and Harper Lee, naming her the first writer of her generation to dramatize the lives and language of poor whites in the South. "She has an all-encompassing knowledge of what it's like to be the other, the outsider," says Studs Terkel. Garrett agrees: "It's as if the people in Dorothea Lange photographs, in the work of Margaret Bourke-White and Walker Evans, were able to speak." But with a dead-center look that says "Don't mess with me, honey. I'm liable to pour gravy on you," Allison defies easy characterization, as one writer for The New York Times put it. And she likes it that way.

Born in Greenville, South Carolina, to a fourteen-year-old mother, Dorothy Allison was raised near her large extended family. After her mother married, her aunts provided occasional refuge from an abusive stepfather. The violence and chaos of her upbringing, stemming largely from her family’s poverty, fuel Allison’s writing, as does the strength she saw in her relatives’ survival despite such hopeless conditions. Her chance to escape came when a National Merit Scholarship paid for her to attend Florida Presbyterian College. She later earned a master’s degree in anthropology from the New School for Social Research in New York.
Allison became active in the women’s movement in the early seventies, working for several feminist publications and helping establish Herstore, a feminist bookstore in Tallahassee, Florida. She credits feminism for enabling her to become a writer. Although she had begun writing as a child, she viewed writing the truth as such a dangerous activity that she burned everything she wrote. But in 1973 friends in the lesbian-feminist collective where she was living convinced her to stop destroying her work.

“The Politics of They Dorothy Allison’s Bastard Out of Carolina As Critique of Class, Gender, and Sexual Ideologies Moira P. Baker “We were the they everyone talks aboutthe ungrateful poor,” asserts Dorothy Allison, referring to her childhood experiences in Greenville, South Carolina (“Question” 13). Her work, she writes, represents “the condensed and reinvented experience of a cross-eyed working-class lesbian. . .who has made the decision to live. . .on the page. . .for me and mine” (“Preface” 12). In the stories collected in Trash and in her stunning first novel, Bastard Out of Carolina , she offers an uncompromising vision of the ugliness and injustice of poverty. Incandescent with grief, rage, and pride, her fiction also affirms the complex subjectivity of persons who must endure the contempt of a society that affords them one of two mythologized positions: “the truly worthy poor” or “white trash.” In “A Question of Class,” Allison exposes how the middle-class mythology of the noble poorthose “hard-working, ragged but clean, and intrinsically honorable” personsencouraged her family to destroy themselves because they did not fit this myth (18). In Bastard Out of Carolina , Allison critiques not only two of the most damaging bourgeois myths about so-called “white trash”their characteristic illegitimacy and incestbut also the ideology of motherhood underpinning a sex/gender system that cuts across social classes.

LiTTerair: Dorothy Allison

77. Poor Raging Girl: Dorothy Allison's _Bastard Out Of Carolina_
Poor Raging Girl dorothy allison's Bastard Out of Carolina. Megan, CarolynE. Moving Toward Truth An Interview with dorothy allison. .
http://www.womenwriters.net/bookreviews/griffith2.htm
Article by Nicole Lariscy Griffith, Staff Writer
Poor Raging Girl: Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina What makes a person white trash and what does it mean to be inscribed in this powerless class? Is the trashiness biological, a product of tainted blood, or is it strictly economic? What role does behavior play in this outcast whiteness? From the perspective of the southern poor white, what do other races and socioeconomic classes look like? Moreover, how can a young woman transcend this position of utter powerlessness? These are a few of the theoretical questions raised by Dorothy Allison in her book based on her childhood in Greenville, South Carolina. Not only were the Boatwrights poor but they drank, they were violent, and while all of the men were dangerously virile some were also sexually abusive. This behavior and their poverty earned the family the status of "poor white trash." Moreover, though the Boatwrights looked white, their blood was rumored to be colored by several races of Americans. Allison's autobiographical exposition is one which challenges race, economics, and class simultaneously. In the book, images of blackness are more beautiful than the dirty whiteness of the poor white family. And images of pure whiteness are utterly repellant. The hierarchy of racial beauty (and power) is thus upset. Allison renders American Indians and African Americans more beautiful than the disempowered and hated white trash community. Moreover, Allison paints socially accepted white people in the most grotesque light of all.

Dorothy Allison: A Family Redeemed by Susan Salter 3/2/98
Back in 1992, when Dorothy Allison burst into the literary limelight with her bestselling novel, Bastard Out of Carolina Trash and Skin . Photographs from the early 1990s show a woman whose fists are usually clenched, squinting straight into the camera and looking a little the worse for wear, a woman whose very expression might be translated as: "No Confession Necessary." One expects, meeting Allison for the first time, to be cussed out. Allison has responsibilities that she seems proud of: two pugs, Attila and Chl ; a goldfish; a five-year-old son, Wolf; and a 10-year relationship with Alix Layman, a musician finishing her Ph.D. in music theory. The writer recently built a new leaf for the dining room table so that her dinner guests can sit down. This summer, she will take on an au pair.
