Biography
John Adams
Composer USA Born 15 Feb 1947
A native of New England (he was born in Worcester, Massachusetts) and Harvard graduate, John Adams moved to San Francisco in 1971, where he quickly became involved in the music life of that forward-moving city. He taught for ten years at the Conservatory, and while the composer-in-residence at the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in the 1980s, wrote several of his most-performed works in a highly likeable minimalist style, 'Shaker Loops', 'Harmonium', 'Grand Pianola Music', and 'Harmonieliehre' among them. His operas 'Nixon in China' and 'The Death of Klinghoffer' put recent political events in a modern operatic context. Adams's music is considered by many as the acceptable face of minimalism, and deals with subjects readily identifiable for a modern urban audience - his short orchestral piece 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine' describes being taken for a spin by a friend just a bit too keen to show how fast their new car can go.

John Quincy Adams The first President who was the son of a President, John Quincy Adams in many respects paralleled the career as well as the temperament and viewpoints of his illustrious father. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, in 1767, he watched the Battle of Bunker Hill from the top of Penn's Hill above the family farm. As secretary to his father in Europe, he became an accomplished linguist and assiduous diarist. After graduating from Harvard College, he became a lawyer. At age 26 he was appointed Minister to the Netherlands, then promoted to the Berlin Legation. In 1802 he was elected to the United States Senate. Six years later President Madison appointed him Minister to Russia. Serving under President Monroe, Adams was one of America's great Secretaries of State, arranging with England for the joint occupation of the Oregon country, obtaining from Spain the cession of the Floridas, and formulating with the President the Monroe Doctrine.

John Adams born on Oct. 30 (Oct. 19, old style), 1735, at Braintree (now Quincy), Mass. A Harvard graduate, he considered teaching and the ministry but finally turned to law and was admitted to the bar in 1758. Six years later, he married Abigail Smith. He opposed the Stamp Act, served as lawyer for patriots indicted by the British, and by the time of the Continental Congresses, was in the vanguard of the movement for independence. In 1778, he went to France as commissioner. Subsequently he helped negotiate the peace treaty with Britain, and in 1785 became envoy to London. Resigning in 1788, he was elected vice president under Washington and was re-elected in 1792. Though a Federalist, Adams did not get along with Hamilton, who sought to prevent his election to the presidency in 1796 and thereafter intrigued against his administration. In 1798, Adams's independent policy averted a war with France but completed the break with Hamilton and the right-wing Federalists; at the same time, the enactment of the Alien and Sedition Acts, directed against foreigners and against critics of the government, exasperated the Jeffersonian opposition. The split between Adams and Hamilton resulted in Jefferson's becoming the next president. Adams retired to his home in Quincy. He and Jefferson died on the same day, July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

33. The Eagle 1997 - John Couch Adams And The Discovery Of Neptune
The History of its discovery.
http://www.joh.cam.ac.uk/publications/eagle97/Eagle97-John.html
John Couch Adams and the discovery of Neptune
Fifty years ago, in October 1946, I came up to John's wrestling with the problem of whether to read Natural Sciences or Mathematics. I was much attracted by Mathematics which offered Astronomy as an option in the final year, and unfortunately at that time it was possible to do only half-subject Mathematics in Natural Sciences Part I. In the event, however, I decided on Natural Sciences, more particularly Physics in Part II. On the first day of the Michaelmas Term 1946 a lecture was given by the Astronomer Royal, Sir Harold Spencer Jones, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Discovery of Neptune. Since John Couch Adams, the British astronomer involved in the discovery, was a Johnian, I decided to have a look at his papers in the College Library and write an account of what happened to mark the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the discovery. John Adams was born in 1819 in Cornwall, of farming stock, and from an early age confounded his family and teachers with his mathematical ability. He earned a place at St John's and was awarded a Scholarship. At the end of his undergraduate studies in 1843 he was Senior Wrangler, with more than twice the marks of the Second Wrangler. Despite this success he was always modest, retiring and self-effacing, but always sincere and ready to help people. He had become interested in the problem of Uranus in 1841 when he read a report on Astronomy by the Astronomer Royal Sir George Airy. The five planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn had been observed for centuries, distinguished from stars because they moved relatively to the stars from night to night. Through a telescope each planet was seen as a small disc, whereas a star was a point. Johannes Kepler had shown that each planet orbited the Sun in an ellipse - one of his laws - and Sir Isaac Newton explained these laws by the Inverse Square Law of Gravitation (doubling the distance between two bodies divides by four the gravitational force of attraction).

Please contact me if you have information pertaining to relatives prior to John Adams and Elizabeth, (daughter of George Nailor), of England, probably Worcestershire. According to Alice Cates, "Working against you is that John Adams was located in the part of Prince George County that was Calvert prior to the formation of Prince George about 1696 and the early Calvert records have been lost." Sent as minister to Russia in 1809, he was well received, but the Napoleonic wars eclipsed Russian-American relations. He then helped to draw up the Treaty of Ghent Monroe Doctrine In 1824 Adams was a candidate for the U.S. presidency. Neither he, nor Andrew Jackson , nor Henry Clay received a majority, and the election was decided in the House of Representatives. There Clay supported Adams, making him president. Adams appointed Clay secretary of state, over the Jacksonians' cry that the appointment fulfilled a corrupt bargain. With little popular support and without a party, Adams had an unhappy, ineffective administration, despite his attempts to institute a broad program of internal improvements. Cold and introspective, Adams was not generally popular, but he was respected for his high-mindedness and knowledge. His interest in science led him to promote the

The Adamses were involved in all these momentous political developments. Yet they were an affectionate family as well as a succession of public figures. In whatever part of the world they found themselves, they corresponded with their wives and husbands, their parents and children, discussing everyday incidents, amusing or annoying, as well as significant issues. The entire collection is available on microfilm (608 reels), sets of which are in over ninety libraries in the United States and abroad. The Society also sponsors The Adams Papers editorial project, which is preparing a comprehensive documentary edition of the papers.
