“The world is big. Some people are unable to comprehend that simple fact. They want the world on their own terms, its peoples just like them and their friends, its places like the manicured little patch on which they live. But this is a foolish and blind wish. Diversity is not an abnormality but the very reality of our planet. The human world manifests the same reality and will not seek our permission to celebrate itself in the magnificence of its endless varieties. Civility is a sensible attribute in this kind of world we have; narrowness of heart and mind is not.” -Chinua Achebe

    Introduction
Chinua Achebe is probably the best known of the African writers. He considers himself a political writer, which is accurate, since his writings acutely portray the political and social situation of his country, and deal mostly with how these situations affect individual lives.
Biography CHINUA ACHEBE was born in 1930 in the village of Ogidi in Eastern Nigeria. After studying medicine and literature at the University of Ibadan, he went to work for the Nigerian broadcasting company in Lagos.

    WOMEN IN ACHEBE'S WORLD
Rose Ure Mezu W hen literary activities marking the sixtieth birthday of Chinua Achebe reached fever-pitch in 1990, the greatest accolade given him was summed up in one metaphor: the eagle on the iroko. Now, anybody familiar with the African landscape knows that the iroko is the tallest, strongest tree in the forest and that the eagle is, of course, the king of the birds. It is not an easy feat to scale the tree; that is why the Igbo proverb insists: "One does not climb the iroko twice." Having succeeded in climbing the iroko, the climber should appropriate all that he finds there: he may not be able to do so again. The eagle, however, can both scale and soar above the tree over and over. I n this metaphor the iroko then represents the field of African literature; the eagle, Chinua Achebe. Achebe has, of course, literarily climbed and soared above the iroko several times. More than those of any other African writer, his writings have helped to develop what is known as African literature today. And the single book which has helped him to launch his "revolution" is the slim, classic volume called Things Fall Apart (1958). Having been the first, so to speak, to scale the top of the iroko, this eagle Achebe, and other male eaglets after him, arguably have appropriated all that they have found there. T his paper will explore what is left for female eagles. The focus of my study includes: 1) Achebe's portraiture of women in his fictional universe, the existing sociocultural situation of the period he is depicting, and the factors in it that condition male attitudes towards women; 2) the consequences of the absence of a moderating female principle in his fictions; 3) Achebe's progressively changing attitude towards women s roles; and 4) feminist prospects for African women. In the context of this study, the Igbo people whom Achebe describes will represent the rest of Nigeria and a great many of the nations of Africa.

Achebe, Chinua 1930-, Nigerian writer. A graduate of University College at Ibadan (1953), Achebe is one of Africa's most acclaimed writers. His early novels, including Things Fall Apart (1958) and No Longer at Ease (1960), describe poignantly the effects of European colonialism on Igbo society, Nigeria, and newly independent African nations. He served as a diplomat (1966-68) for Biafra during the Nigerian civil war and later wrote two volumes of poetry, Beware, Soul Brother (1971) and Christmas in Biafra (1973), and one of literary essays, Morning Yet on Creation Day (1975), about the war. He has taught at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1976-81), and edits the influential journal Okike. In 1987 he returned to the novel form with Anthills of the Savannah. See studies by Robert Wren (1980) and Benedict C. Njoku (1984).

    Knowing robs us of wonder.
    Had it not ripped apart
the fearful robes of primordial Night
to steal the force that crafted horns
    on doghead and sowed insurrection
    overnight in the homely beak
of a hen; had reason not given us
assurance that day will daily break
and the sun's array return to disarm
    night's fantastic figurations
each daybreak would be garlanded at the city gate and escorted with royal drums to a stupendous festival of an amazed world. One day after the passage of a dark April storm ecstatic birds followed its furrows sowing songs of daybreak though the time was now past noon, their sparkling notes sprouting green incantations everywhere to free the world from harmattan death. But for me the celebration is make-believe; the clamorous change of season will darken the hills of Nsukka for an hour or two when it comes; no hurricane will hit my sky and no song of deliverance.
