Our research is focused on the chemistry of inorganic compounds which have metal-metal bonds. Over recent years, it has been shown that transition metals form a wide variety of cluster compounds. These compounds have from two to many metal ions bound together. The metal-metal bonds are often strong and a large number of different structures are observed. Most of the compounds that have been discovered were not arrived at by a logical synthesis but rather were discovered serendipitously during fundamental studies of the reactivity of other inorganic compounds. Metal clusters are significant for at least three reasons: Clusters may have unique electrical properties. Study of their chemistry may lead to new techniques for building electrical circuits from molecular units via synthetic methods.
