THRILLING WIN FOR PAES-BHUPATHI AT FRENCH OPEN S.C. Bhatt T here are not many examples of a combination of players coming back after a gap of time and succeeding in their second attempt at Grand Slam as Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have done. Their victory at French Open on June 9, 2001, coming on the heels of their 1999 success tells a story of tremendous achievement followed by parting, so cruel and as yet unexplained. Not only in 1999 they won the French Open but also went on to win the Wimbledon title. Then came the break. Fortunately, it did not last long. Before the break and eventual makeup, there came the US Open at which they reached the final but did not win the title. They are the only pair to reach the final of the US Open as well as the Australian Open and win the French Open Crown and the Wimbledon title in 1999. Their differences were composed and they began to play together and won a couple of titles before they launched themselves to contest a Grand Slam tournament. When they won the first round the countless supporters of the pair in India and many abroad felt relieved and hoped other rounds would be equally productive. Remember that unlike 1999 they were unseeded in the tournament. It makes not much of a difference except that you encounter difficult players on your way up. The organisers did not have any material to go by on them as a pair but gave them entry all the same.

It was learned that Ai Sugiyama was ranked first in the women's double on Oct. 23 according to WTA. Sugiyama at that point already had 6 wins this year. It's the first time for a Japanese player to achieve such feat. Sugiyama wins US open
This time Ai Sugiyama's pairing up with Julie Halard-Decugis proved successful. On Sept 10 they played in the final of the women's doubles. The pair defeated Zimbabwe's Cara Black and Elena Likhovtseva of Russia 6-0, 1-6, 6-1. After the victory, Japanese Foreign Minister visited the winners and congratulated them for their first grand slam victory. Sugiyama's next challenge is at the Sydney Olympics where she will play with Nana Miyagi. Sugiyama fights in Wimbledon final
Ai Sugiyama formed a team with France's Julie Halard-Decugis in the women's doubles. They went up to the final and played on July 10, but faced a defeat before the Williams sister Serena and women's champion Venus. The score was 6-3,6-2. IN 1999

And now, when nothing seems to be going right for Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, that same passion seems to have been transferred into going for each other's jugular. In the whodunit fast turning into a why-he-dunit, there is one more twist the role of the fathers, who ironically had brought them together the last time the duo had a problem. Reacting to Leander's comments to a TV channel confirming that he would not be playing with Mahesh this year, with the possible exception of the Davis Cup and Olympics, Mahesh said that the whole thing had just got out of hand. He blamed the two fathers Dr Vece Paes and C G K Bhupathi and Leander for the escalation of what is fast turning into a real messy affair, with allegations and counter-allegations. Talking to

TENNIS
A special, winning partnership
The success and strength of the Leander Paes-Mahesh Bhupathi team, the greatest Indian doubles pair, springs from their belief in each other. NARESH KUMAR IT was a historic occasion for Indian tennis when Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the men's doubles title at the French Open championships. The four Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open - are ack nowledged as summits of the tennis world and winning a title in any one of them brings international acclaim and recognition. Paes' and Bhupathi's feat - they are the first Indian pair to win a Grand Slam title - is a matter of great pride and joy. So often in the past year have Paes and Bhupathi failed narrowly to win a Grand Slam doubles title that one was beginning to despair and wonder if they would ever pull it off. In 1998, which was a big year for them, they were in the semi-finals of three Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, the French Open and the U.S. Open - and won a record eight events on the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) tour. This year, at the Australian Open, they were a step closer to the summit but fell at th e last hurdle, losing narrowly to the strong combination of Patrick Rafter and Jonas Bjorkman in the final. During the ATP tournament in Chennai in April, there was talk of a possible split between Paes and Bhupathi. Happily the boys stayed together, won the title in Chennai and have now won their first Grand Slam men's doubles title.

New Delhi: Shyam Minotra, the chairman of India’s tennis selectors, feels Mahesh Bhupathi is one of the world's best intuitive players, a quality that helped him win the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon July 7. “He is an intuitive doubles player one of the best in the world today. It is this quality that helped him triumph,” Minotra, a former David Cup player, told Indo-Asian News Service. “He has done really well in this category in the last couple of years.”
