LOS ANGELES, (AFP) - American tennis legend Arthur Ashe died of complications from AIDS 10 years ago but his memory still burns brightly in players like James Blake. "Arthur Ashe started a lot of things (for young black players)," said Blake, one of three black men to represent the United States in Davis Cup play along with Ashe and Mal Washington. "I think it helps having prominent African American players on tour." Ashe possessed the rare quality of being able to balance tennis with social activism. One of Ashe's favourite sayings was "I am a citizen of the world" and one of his biggest gifts to the sport was the inspiration he gave to young black players. When Blake was just learning to play Ashe visited the Harlem Junior Tennis Program. "I owe a great debt of gratitude to Arthur Ashe. What I go through now is much easier, thanks to what he did.

Denison's Cam Vincent '02 Earns National Arthur Ashe
Award for Sportsmanship and Humanitarian Service
The Arthur Ashe Jr. Award was established in 1984 by the ITA to recognize and reward the player who exemplifies the very best of what college tennis has to offer, both on and off the court. Factors considered in selecting the annual honoree are outstanding sportsmanship and character, superior scholastic and extracurricular accomplishments, national-caliber tennis achievement, and a demonstrated commitment to humanitarian service. Vincent was a three-year letterwinner at Denison, garnering first-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors for both singles and doubles. He was a semifinalist in this past year's ITA Midwest Singles Championships, and led his Denison team to two consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference championship titles and three straight NCAA Men's Tennis Championships appearances. Academically, Vincent's achievements were equally impressive. Graduating in only three years, he posted a 3.66 grade-point average while pursuing his B.A. in economics. His academic success earned him membership in Denison's prestigious Honors Program. He was a consistent Dean's List student, and will pursue his M.B.A. at Miami University of Ohio.

Even after death, Arthur Ashe topples another barrier
July 11, 1996
Web posted at: 1:20 a.m. EDT RICHMOND, Virginia (CNN) The city that banned young Arthur Ashe from its whites-only tennis courts dedicated a monument to the late athlete Wednesday as statues of Confederate heroes looked on. The 12-foot bronze statue of the first black man to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open was unveiled on Monument Avenue before about 1,500 people, ending more than a year of bitter debate in the former capital of the Confederacy. Statues of Gen. Robert E. Lee and other Confederate leaders also line the roadway. "Arthur Ashe Jr. is a true Virginia hero, and he belongs here," said Johnnie Ashe, Arthur's brother. Former Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first African-American to be elected to that state leadership post, said the street "is now an avenue for all people." (128k AIFF or WAV sound) Ashe was praised for his accomplishments as a tennis star as well as an activist for human rights and AIDS, the disease that killed him in 1993. Ashe contracted the virus that causes AIDS from a blood transfusion during heart surgery. Wednesday would have been his 53rd birthday. For many, the monument is sweet justice.
