Biography of Arthur Ashe
Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. was born in Richmond, Virginia, to Mattie and Arthur Ashe, Sr. on July 10, 1943. He spent his young life reading and listening to music with his mother, Mattie, whom he adored. Ashe began playing tennis at Brookfield Park in Richmond at the age of seven, after his mother died of complications from surgery. With grace and natural movements, three years later he attracted the attention of part-time tennis coach, Ronald Charity. Impressed by the potential he saw in Ashe, Charity made arrangements for Ashe to spend a summer at Dr. Walter Johnson's home in Lynchburg. Johnson had previously coached tennis great, Althea Gibson, and was eager to work with the young Ashe. After just one summer, Johnson agreed to become 10-year old Arthur Ashe's mentor, and the two began working non-stop to make Ashe the best tennis player in the world. In 1957, Ashe earned his first big victory as he became the first African American to ever play in the Maryland boy's championships. bodyOffer(19150) After spending several years traveling from Richmond to tennis tournaments outside his segregated neighborhood, Ashe tired of the commute and accepted an offer from St. Louis tennis coach, Richard Hudlin, to move into his home. Ashe enrolled in Sumner High School for his senior year, and continued to work diligently at improving his tennis game.

1994 Arthur Ashe... Arthur Ashe Heroes are hard to find, especially if you look for them in popular culture. Some of them die young and some of them grow so unheroic off the field or stage that you almost wish they had. Then there was Arthur Ashe, who died too young at 49, but who wouldn't have worn out his welcome had he lived to be as old as Methuselah. Arthur began his tennis career at age 10 when his father sent him to the closest thing a black child in Virginia could find to a good tennis camp in those days. He sent him to Dr. Robert Johnson in Lynchburg. Dr. Johnson would take in a few young players and try to teach them how to play tennis and how to survive in a world as white as their uniforms. That training prepared him for a brilliant college career at UCLA. He became UCLA's No. 1 player and was named to the U.S. Davis Cup team in 1963 - the first black ever chosen. After UCLA the highlight of his career came in 1975 when he became the first black man to win the singles championship on the hallowed lawn at Wimbledon. By the time he retired from competitive tennis is 1979 after bypass heart surgery, Ashe was a legend. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985. He had something of an odd life - a black man in a white man's game, a child of limited means who'd later snack on a caviar in Monte Carlo, a multifaceted man in a sport that seems to best serve the tunnel-visioned and self-centered, a humanist in a world of deception and greed.

Arthur Ashe Arthur Ashe was born on this date in 1943. He was an American tennis player and the first African American man to win a major tennis tournament. Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr., was born in Richmond, Virginia. At age ten he began to play tennis under the direction of Dr. Walter Johnson, who taught 1957 Wimbledon women's champion, Althea Gibson. Ashe went on to attend UCLA. In 1963 he became the first African American to play on the Davis Cup national tennis team, he also won the U.S. intercollegiate singles championship.
Ashe survived heart surgery in 1979 and announced his retirement from competition a year later. He then served as non-playing captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team and became involved in various charitable and youth-oriented activities such as the National Junior Tennis League and the ABC Cities Tennis Program. During a second heart surgery in 1983, it is likely that Ashe was given blood tainted with HIV, which causes AIDS. After acknowledging his disease, he became an active fundraiser and speaker on behalf of AIDS research. Ashe wrote A Hard Road to Glory: A History of the Afro-American Athlete and Days of Grace. In 1997 the U.S. Tennis Center's main stadium in New York City was named after him in honor of his many contributions to the game.

T he statue looks right at home on Richmond's proud and venerable Monument Avenue a lasting memorial to a beloved native son. Arthur Ashe stands there, a tennis racket in one hand, books in the other, children at his feet. Beneath him, on one side of the pedestal, is a brief reminder of his athletic achievements, the books he wrote, the awards bestowed on him and the humanitarian acts for which he became known around the world. On the other side there is a biblical excerpt from Hebrews. It reads, ''Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.''

At a time when athletes are arrested regularly and outlandish behavior abounds in so many sports, Ashe is missed as much for his grace and dignity as for his intelligence and willingness to address the larger issues facing society. Ashe, the U.S. Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open champion who died at 49, was one of the few athletes, like Muhammad Ali, who transcended sports by taking stands on political and social issues.

    Arthur Ashe
Arthur Ashe was to tennis, what Michael Jordan was to basketball. In the 1970’s Arthur Ashe put tennis on the map. He was the first black athlete to play for the American Davis cup team. This brought on a lot of attention and therefore the game of tennis grew in popularity. 1975 was one of Ashe’s most productive years. At the age of 31 he won Wimbledon (he is currently the only black man to accomplish this feat) and also pushed his ranking to number one in the world. Arthur Ashe was truly one of the greatest, if not the best, ambassadors the game of tennis has ever had. Back to 70s Main Page

Arthur Ashe holds his Wimbledon trophy cup after defeating Jimmy Connors for the men's singles championship on July 5, 1975. A decade after his death, Ashe's legacy lives on.
NEW YORK (February 4, 2003 6:03 p.m. EST) - On a winter's day, James Blake gave a clinic for children at the Harlem Tennis Center, the old wood-floored armory where Arthur Ashe once did the same when Blake was a child.
To Blake's regret, he doesn't remember meeting Ashe and didn't learn much about him until his death from an AIDS-related illness 10 years ago Thursday, when Blake was 13.
"The more I learned about him, the more impressed I was with him," Blake said before going to Croatia to play this weekend for the U.S. Davis Cup team, as Ashe did with distinction so many times.
"He made such a difference in this world and it overshadows what he did as a tennis player. What I learned from Arthur was to be a well-rounded person, to make academics as important as tennis. That's what worked for him and that's what worked for me. That's something I try to pass on to kids."
What Ashe did is still making a difference. His spirit is alive in programs he started in education, urban health, junior tennis and the fight against AIDS.

Arthur Ashe: A story of courage, grace and reputation A rthur Ashe was one of the world's greatest tennis players. In 1975, he was the first African American to win the Wimbledon tennis championship, defeating Jimmy Connors. He wasn't given any chance to win. But, while he may be remembered most for his athletic accomplishments, those were not the greatest challenges Arthur Ashe would face. There are few real heroes from the world of professional sports, but Arthur Ashe is certainly an exception. This is more than the story of a skinny tennis player from Richmond - a black kid in a traditionally white sport. It's the story of how he lived his life and about his personal values. Most of all, it is about reputation. Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. died of pneumonia on February 6, 1993 in New York City. It was an infection brought on by the AIDS virus which Arthur had contracted from a blood transfusion during heart surgery in 1983. Arthur left behind a wife and a six year old daughter. In his autobiography, he expresses the enduring values which he hopes his daughter and others will embrace. Before you read his story, ask your self the question, if you knew you were dying, what would you wish to say to those that are most important to you and what reputation would you leave behind? Most of the information and passages quoted for this article have been taken from Arthur's autobiography entitled, "Days of Grace: A Memoir," published by Alfred A. Knopf (1993). It is also available as an audio book. Both versions are highly recommended.
