Ashe, Arthur (Robert)
Ashe holding up his trophy after winning the singles title at Wimbledon, 1975 UPI/Corbis-Bettmann (b. July 10, 1943, Richmond, Va., U.S.d. Feb. 6, 1993, New York, N.Y.), American tennis player, the first black winner of a major men's singles championship. Ashe began to play tennis at the age of seven in a neighbourhood park. He was coached by Walter Johnson of Lynchburg, Va., who had coached tennis champion Althea Gibson . Ashe moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he was coached by Richard Hudlin, before he entered the University of California at Los Angeles on a tennis scholarship. In 1963 Ashe won the U.S. hard-court singles championship; in 1965 he took the intercollegiate singles and doubles titles; and in 1967 he won the U.S. clay-court singles championship. In 1968 he captured the U.S. (amateur) singles and open singles championships. He played on the U.S. Davis Cup team (1963-70, 1975, 1977-78) and helped the U.S. team to win the Davis Cup challenge (final) round in 1968, 1969, and 1970. In the latter year he became a professional. His criticism of South African apartheid racial policy led to denial of permission to play in that country's open tournament, and, as a consequence, on March 23, 1970, South Africa was excluded from Davis Cup competition. In 1975, when he won the Wimbledon singles and the World Championship singles, he was ranked first in world tennis. After retiring from play in 1980, he became captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team, a position he held from 1981 to 1985.

Hadad and Qureshi reached Wimbledon's third round
Israel's Amir Hadad and Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi have received the ATP Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award. The duo won praise for continuing to play doubles together in the face of religious and political pressures for them to split. Qureshi, a Muslim, first teamed up with Hadad, who is Jewish, at Wimbledon last year. ATP chief Mark Miles said the pairs' determination to put aside their differences and get on with their tennis is inspirational. "Amir and Aisam-ul-Haq provided much-needed relief with their simple message about tolerance through tennis," he said. Nobody in Israel has said don't play with him
Amir Hadad
Hadad said he never intended to make a political statement with his choice of doubles partner. "I have had quite a lot people come up to me and ask me when I was going to play with Qureshi again," he said.

Arthur Ashe.

ARTHUR ASHE Tennis Player A tennis star of the 1960s and 1970s, Ashe was also an African-American pioneer: he was the first black man to win at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon. He scored many other firsts in his career, including becoming the first African-American on the U.S. Davis Cup team in 1963. Ashe played tennis at UCLA and was national collegiate champion in 1965. He won three major tournaments in his career: the U.S. Open (1968), the Australian Open (1970) and Wimbledon (1975). Ashe retired in 1980 and was elected to the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985. In 1988 he discovered he had AIDS, probably having gotten the HIV virus from a blood transfusion during heart surgery in 1983. Ashe made the news public at a 1992 press conference and died the next year.
Extra credit : Ashe served in the U.S. Army from 1966-68, reaching the rank of second lieutenant... Ashe's three-volume history of African-American athletes, A Hard Road To Glory , was published in 1988... His book Days of Grace: A Memoir was published in 1993... The main court of the National Tennis Center (home to the U.S. Open) is named Arthur Ashe Stadium... Ashe is sometimes compared with another tennis star who broke racial barriers

Ashe, Arthur Robert Ashe, Arthur Robert, , American tennis player, b. Richmond, Va. Ashe rose from his hometown's public courts to become the first African-American male to reach prominence in tennis. He won the 1965 intercollegiate singles championship while at the Univ. of California at Los Angeles. Denied a visa by South Africa on racial grounds in 1970, Ashe forced the issue, appearing before the United Nations and urging the World Tennis Union to expel South Africa because of its apartheid policy. Noted for his grace, hard-hit topspin, and outstanding backhand, Ashe won the 1968 U.S. Open, the 1970 Australian Open, and the 1975 Wimbledon title. He retired as a player following a 1979 heart attack, but continued to serve as the U.S. Davis Cup captain. In 1992 he announced that he had acquired AIDS from a heart operation years earlier. He remained an active spokesperson on many issues, including race relations and AIDS, until his death.

Ashe Was Tennis' Magical Man Reaction: After his AIDS announcement, a stunned tennis world recalls the impact he had. Los Angeles Times (LT) - THURSDAY April 9, 1992 Edition: Home Edition Section: Sports Page: 1 Pt. C Col. 2 Story Type: Profile Word Count: 1,697
Thomas Bonk; Times Staff Writer When Roscoe Tanner walked onto the carpeted tennis court of the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1973 to play doubles, his first match as a professional, he took a quick look around. He saw Ken Rosewall, Fred Stolle and Arthur Ashe. Tanner was nervous, but he breathed a sigh of relief. "At least I knew the Big Guy was on my side," Tanner said. The Big Guy was Ashe who, despite a rather unimpressive frame that stretched to 6-1 and carried only 155 pounds, always seemed to command the sort of respect that tennis has glimpsed only on occasion. Tanner was struck once again Wednesday by the impact of Ashe when his former doubles partner revealed at a news conference in New York that he has AIDS. The announcement by Ashe, the 1968 U.S. Open, 1970 Australian Open and 1975 Wimbledon champion, shocked and saddened many of those who knew the 48-year-old tennis pioneer. "Gosh, I'm terribly, terribly distraught," said 1938 Grand Slam winner Don Budge. "It's a damn shame. It just makes you sick. There hasn't been a higher class guy in tennis."

USTA to Name Tennis Facility for Arthur Ashe Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - Tuesday, February 18, 1997 09:26:00 PM NEW YORK (Reuter) The United States Tennis Association reportedly has reversed a previous decision and will name the new tennis facility being built for the U.S. Open in honor of Arthur Ashe. The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that the facility in Flushing, N.Y., will be named Arthur Ashe Stadium in honor of the former U.S. Open champion who died of AIDS in 1993. A USTA spokesperson would not confirm the report, but said a news conference has been scheduled for Wednesday. The USTA originally rejected the idea of naming the facility after Ashe, choosing instead to name it USTA Stadium and leaving open the possibility of selling the name to a corporate sponsor. However, the USTA Board of Directors reconvened last weekend in Atlanta to reconsider the decision. Ashe became the first African American man to win a Grand Slam title when he captured the U.S. Open in 1968. He later took the Australian Open in 1970 and Wimbledon in 1975 and finished his career with 33 career titles.
