  • - - Diving for Cover - - Just as in shooting wars, those who command grand legal campaigns have to learn to live with a little collateral damage. Last week it was the men's swimming and diving teams at the University of Miami that took a direct hit. University officials say they had to kill those sports to comply with Title IX, the federal gender-participation statute which increasingly governs all elements of collegiate athletics. Title IX requires schools which receive federal funds, i.e. just about every single one, to give men and women an "equal" chance to compete. "It seems unfair that a school can say it's our right to give women this opportunity and not necessarily men," says former UM swimmer Jennifer Burzawa. Yes, but Title IX is not about fairness. Instead, it perversely defines equality in terms of athletic participation that reflects the overall male/female ratio of the student body. And in Miami's case, the student body has flipped in just a few years from majority-male to majority-female. So even though the school added women's soccer and crew teams and limited the number of non-scholarship players in football and baseballthe "walk-ons," the players who have to be crazy in love with a sport to go to practice everydayit was doomed to come up short.

U of M Aquatic Center "Minnesota's Aquatic Center is one of the most comfortable facilities that I have ever dived in. The lighting is excellent and the boards are smooth. I usually do not like to dive indoors, but of the indoor facilities that I have had to dive indoors in, this has to rate as one of the best." -Greg Louganis, Olympic and World Champion Diver The University Aquatic Center, located east of Cooke Hall on the Minneapolis campus, was built in 1990. It was fashioned to meet or exceed Olympic standards so that it could host major swimming and diving events. Nearly two acres in size, the Aquatic Center houses the Dorothy L. Sheppard Pool, a 50-meter competition pool, eight lanes wide and eight feet deep, with a movable bulkhead. The separate diving well features a pair of one-and three-meter boards, as well as 1, 5, 7.5 and 10-meter diving platforms. In addition to the 1,346 permanent seats, there is room for 1,200 temporary bleachers. Skylights run the length of the ceiling, reducing the need for electric lighting at daytime events. Fifty-four loudspeakers surrounding the pool give it "the best acoustics in the country," according to aquatics director Duane Proell. The Aquatic Center has been the site for some of the top swimming and diving events in the country: the 1990 Olympic Festival, 1991 Women's Big Ten Championships, 1991 United States Open, 1991 United States Diving Championships, 1992 Men's Big Ten Champion-ships and the 1993 Women's NCAA Championships. In 1994, the Aquatic Center was the site of the Men's Big Ten Championships and hosted the the meet again in 1998. The Aquatic Center also hosted Phillips 66 USS National Championships in '98. The Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships were held for the first time in 1994 and again in '97. The University of Minnesota will host the NCAAs again this year. The Aquatic Center is also the site Minnesota amateur and high school meets and a full schedule of recreational sports for the campus and the community.

W ith the graduation of legendary swimmer Josh Osterberg and diving standout Jon Chesebro, the members of the Newton South boys swim began the 1998-1999 season knowing that it would be one of rebuilding. The arrival of coach Mike Kennedy, however, has brought new hopes for the future. Replacing former assistant coach Scott Stover, Kennedy brings new ideas and training techniques to his role. Kennedy brings his own personal competitive experiences to South. Although he did not start diving until his freshman year of high school, Kennedy has added to his list of accomplishments a state title in diving, several state swimming titles, and a trip to nationals.
K ennedyís athletic ability extends from swimming to football, baseball, and basketball, and gymnastics. His main focus, however, is diving.
D uring his freshman year of high school, Kennedy joined the swim team. Discovering his talent for diving was quite accidental. Unable to finish a workout during practice, Kennedy took a break. Noticing the diving board, he climbed on the diving board and started doing flips reminiscent of his gymnastics days. A diving coach who happened to be on deck recognized Kennedyís talent and immediately recruited him for the diving team.
I remember this diving coach who was on deck while I was on the board that day, and he told me 'Youíre diving,'î Kennedy said.

History of Olympic Diving by Ron O'Brien Fancy diving had its origin as far back as the 17th century in connection with the great gymnastic movement in Germany and Sweden. In the summertime, gymnasts moved their equipment to the beaches, and acrobatics over the water became a part of their activities. Diving, then, is more related to gymnastics than to swimming. However, since swimming and diving both use a water medium, they are naturally linked. Platform diving (33 feet high) achieved international notice in the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis when it was included as an event on the men's swimming program. Springboard diving was added for the 1908 Games in London. Women's diving was slower in being accepted. It was not until 1912 that plain high diving was included in the Olympics, and 1920 that the first women's springboard contest was conducted. Fancy high diving for women came into being in 1928 internationally.

Lance Armstrong, tennis player Jennifer Capriati, and the U.S. Postal Service Team have been voted the 2001 USOC SportsMan, SportsWoman and Sports Team of the Year. The USOC SportsMan and SportsWoman of the Year awards have been presented annually since 1974 to the top overall male and female athlete from within the USOC member organizations. The team award was added in 1996. Voters for the awards include national media, the USOC Executive Committee, the USOC Board of Directors and the USOC Athletes' Advisory Council. Armstrong won his third consecutive Tour de France in 2001, the first U.S. rider to achieve the feat (fifth overall). On the way to his victory in Paris, the cyclist won four Tour de France stages. Armstrong also finished in first place at the Tour de Suisse, was second in the Amstel Gold Race (Netherlands) and eighth in the Semana Catalana (Spain). He is fourth in the UCI world road ranking. Armstrong was previously honored by the USOC as its 1999 SportsMan of the Year. The U.S. Postal Service Team was honored for successfully defending the Tour de France yellow jersey in 2001 for the third consecutive year. Among the team's other achievements were winning Ghent-Wevelgem (George Hincapie) and earning third overall in the Vuelta a Espana (Levi Leipheimer).

    OLYMPIC CHAMPION GREG LOUGANIS
TO SPEAK ON DISCRIMINATION AT ST. BONA
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y., Jan. 17, 2003 Louganis began competing in diving at age 10 and by age 16 he was able to compete in the 1976 Olympics, winning a silver medal. By age 24 he became the first man in more than 50 years to win two Olympic gold medals in diving by winning both the platform and springboard events.
In 1986, Louganis won the platform and springboard events again, at the World Championships. In the 1988 Olympics two years later, despite a critical injury during a dive, he became the first man to win double gold medals for diving in two consecutive Olympics.
