MCC Soccer:
Women look to dominate in 2000
BY CHRIS BOWMAN
MESA LEGEND
Submitted September 19, 2000
As women’s soccer begins its fifth season at MCC, the T-Birds will attempt to continue their dominance of the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference under 1999 Coach of the Year Danny Sanchez. Jim Allen/MESA LEGEND MCC goaltender Deb Daley has shutout opponents in four of five games. Last season, MCC was ranked first in the nation for more than a month and finished with a 20-2 record. Their season ended in Utah at the District A playoffs where they lost 2-1 in overtime against Dixie College. Sanchez, who has led the women to the district playoffs in three of their first four seasons, believes the 2000 squad has a chance to be one of his best. “We have an extremely deep team this year,” said Sanchez, who is 69-11-3 during his tenure. “In the past, we sometimes had a let-down when we went to our substitutes. But with this team I think we will get a lift from the bench.

Beyond 100 By JOEY JOHNSTON of The Tampa Tribune The Top 100? We can't restrict ourselves any longer. Here's a look at some others who had an impact on our local sports scene during the 20th Century. BASEBALL Tampa Catholic has won eight state championships since 1968, mostly due to standout pitchers such as Nardi Contreras, Davian Menendez, Manuel Seoane (20-0 as a senior), John Tagliarino, Julian Gonzalez, Lance McCullers and Richard Monteleone (first-round pick in 1982). Jesuit had its own streak of big-time pitchers with Troy Carrasco, Rob Bonanno (career strikeout record at Florida), Marc Valdes, Brad Radke (went 20-10 with Twins in 1997, winning 12 consecutive starts), Sam Marsonek (first-round pick in 1996), Geoff Goetz (first-round pick in 1997), Nick Stocks and Ryan Gloger (now at Stanford). Jefferson's very distinguished alumni includes Tony La Russa, Lenny Faedo (first-round pick in 1977), Ron Martinez, Sam Militello (pitched three consecutive no-hitters) and Luis Gonzalez (had 30-game hitting streak last season for the Arizona Diamondbacks. More notables: Dave Anderson (Northeast), Brad Baisley (Land O'Lakes), Patrick Boyd (CCC), Ed Charles (Gibbs), Dave Eiland (Zephyrhills), Carl Everett (Hillsborough), Danny Graves (Brandon), Scott Hemond (Dunedin), Tom Hume (Northeast), Kiki Jones (Hillsborough), Vance Lovelace (Hillsborough), Terry McCormick (Jesuit), Gene Nelson (Pasco), Rodd Kelley (Brandon), Troy Kent (Jesuit), Brian McRae (Manatee), Doug Million (Sarasota), Chris Myers (Plant), Buster Naraum (Clearwater), Danny O'Brien (St. Petersburg Catholic), Pat Osburn (Clearwater), Min Park (Leto), John Ramos (Plant), Marcus Rhaney (Middleton), Jason Romano (Hillsborough), Ken Suarez (Jesuit), Curt Suchan (Jesuit), John Tamargo (Tampa Catholic), Bruce Thompson (Brandon), Ozzie Timmons (Brandon), Salvy Urso (Plant) and Gabe White (Sebring).

When I stepped into Banchero's in Hayward, those family-style memories quickly returned. And, why wouldn't they? Founder John Banchero Sr. use to work at Bertola's. How's that for intuition?
