Sunday, June 2, 2002 Deserved Draw for Cameroon and Ireland Cameroon 1, Republic of Ireland 1 The Roy Keane affair seems all but a distant memory following the Republic of Ireland's tie with Olympic and African champions Cameroon. The disgraced captain's former side proved that they are far more than a one man team, coming from behind to tie a larger and more powerful squad. Cameroon's skill and finesse were on display as they controlled the ball for the majority of the first half. The trio of Patrick Mboma, Samuel Eto'o, and Geremi gave Irish goalie Shay Given the opportunity to prove his place as one of the English Premiership's top keepers for Newcastle United. At 18 minutes into the match Given challenged Eto'o, who was alone in the crease, making a brilliant save. But Cameroon's moment of glory came at 39 minutes on a close range goal by Mboma. Credit must be given for the brilliant set up by striker Eto'o who danced past Irish veteran Steve Staunton to complete the cross. After a shaky first half the Republic came out in full force pressuring Cameroon's goal until the final whistle. At 52 minutes Matt Holland equalized the game with a blast to the lower left corner from 25 yards out. Beforehand, a seemingly confident German team, a super confident former captain and manager Franz Beckenbauer seemed confident that they would beat England as they had at Wembley. A draw was the least and worst they expected, and that would give them comfortably half a dozen points ahead of England at the top of their eliminating group. When, after just six minutes, feeble England defending gave Carsten Jancker an easy chance to put the Germans in the lead, who could doubt their eventual victory? After all, they had recently won a friendly in Hungary while England, admittedly well under strength, had capitulated embarrassingly to the Dutch at Tottenham. But very shortly before half-time, two crucial things happened. Causing the Germans bitterly to regret the blatant missed chance by the young mid-fielder Sebastian Deisler which would have doubled their lead midway through that half. First, David Seaman, whose slow reaction in the English goal at Wembley to Dietmar Hamann's free kick had given Germany their 1-0 success, made a fine and crucial save. Shortly before that, he had badly missed what seemed a simple cross. Laurel Williams, Wood River High School senior throwing out yet another base runner for the softball team this spring, became the first WRHS athlete to letter in three sports for four consecutive years. Blackman’s comment came May 16 in the Horizon Room of Elkhorn Resort, where the top Wood River students in extracurricular activities received accolades at the 2002 Wood River Activities Banquet.
