After spending much of last season alternating between the treatment table and the substitutes bench at Newcastle United few would have blamed the Irish international had he shed a quiet tear, packed his gloves and moved to another club is search of the first team football he so obviously craves. But that would have been alien to the Lifford born player. It would have been a sin against his professional standards and a personal slur on his own ability and, he insists, it is not an option he spent any thought contemplating. Instead, Given concentrated on getting fit, biding his time for the opportunity of again establishing himself as first choice between the Tyneside sticks. That opportunity eventually came in the final few months of last season when an injury to Steve Harper afforded Given the opportunity to step into the breach. Ireland were losing 2-0 at half time after a very sloppy first half. Loads of uncharacteristic mistakes - even from Shay Given! They never gave up in the second half but the damage had been done.
