Bosnich looks at appeal Mark Bosnich was expected to appeal against a Premier League ruling which upheld London soccer club Chelsea's decision to sack him for failing a drugs test. Bosnich on Wednesday failed in his bid to prove Chelsea acted inappropriately when it terminated his $126,000-a-week contract last month after he tested positive to cocaine in November. The former Socceroo goalkeeper claimed the cocaine entered his system through a spiked drink and that Chelsea was wrong to sack him before he faced an official Football Association (FA) hearing, which is likely to take place next week. He faces an international ban of up to a year if the FA finds him guilty. But the Premier League panel of chairman David Richards, secretary Mike Foster and solicitor Peter McCormack said Chelsea had been within its rights to sack him. While Bosnich, 31, wants to appeal, his lawyers spent all day Wednesday considering whether it was worthwhile and were expected to make a decision in the next few days.

SOCCER Australia has invited troubled goalkeeper Mark Bosnich to be with his Socceroo mates when they gather in London on Monday for next week's blockbuster against England.
A day after he lost his appeal against unfair dismissal by English Premier League club Chelsea for taking cocaine, Bosnich, 30, has been granted an opportunity to momentarily forget his problems and "be with the boys" for a couple of days. "From day one Soccer Australia has privately offered any assistance possible to Mark's representatives," a Soccer Australia spokesman said yesterday. "Now if he wants to join the boys for dinner or come to the match at Upton Park, Frank Farina and Soccer Australia would welcome him with open arms." Bosnich's Sydney-based manager Leo Karis described SA's gesture as wonderful and praised the governing body's discretion and full understanding of his client's unpleasant ordeal. "Throughout the whole affair, SA have been very supportive of Mark, which in itself is very positive," Karis said. "I'll make sure Mark gets the invite."

Mark Bosnich REUTERS - Reuters (REUTERS) Bosnich Loses Unfair Dismissal Appeal
05/02/2003 02:33 PM Reuters
Former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has lost his claim against the London club for unfair dismissal, the premier league says. The Australian was sacked by Chelsea last month after being charged by the FA for bringing the game into disrepute following his positive test for cocaine. He appealed to the premier league but the league issued a statement on Tuesday saying they had found in favour of the club. Bosnich, 31, has seven days to appeal against the decision.

Bosnich doomed by lust for life
Soccer scrapheap ... Mark Bosnich in 2000 (Getty Images File Photo)
When Mark Bosnich walked out at Old Trafford to make his debut in goal for Manchester United in 1990, the precocious 18-year-old Australian had the world at the tip of his talented fingers.
Thirteen years later, following his dismissal on Tuesday by Chelsea after testing positive for cocaine, he appears just the latest in a long line of players who have allowed the distractions of stardom to hasten his journey to the soccer scrapheap.
In between those events Bosnich scaled the heights of his sport, winning trophies, international caps, the respect of his peers for his skills, and a huge salary.
Unfortunately, at the same time he was always dogged by independence, arrogance and a lust for life away from football that made it always unlikely that his career would follow the traditional course.
Permit problems
Born in Sydney of Croatian parents in 1972, the schoolboy Bosnich was brought to England in 1989, joining United on a non-contract basis while studying at Manchester Polytechnic.
Following his league debut in April 1990, he made two further appearances the following season, before being forced to return to Australia because of problems obtaining a work permit.

Back to Home Bolton want Bosnich BOLTON WANDERERS have made a bold bid to revive the disgraced, drug-tainted career of Socceroo goalkeeper Mark Bosnich in the English Premier League. The Australian last night learned Bolton manager Sam Allardyce had contacted Bosnich's British agents Jerome Anderson and Jeff Weston to sign the shot-stopper, who has a drugs charge hanging over his head, to the club which is fourth last on the league table.
Weston confirmed the offer had been made to Bosnich. "We can't act on it until the drug hearing has been finalised," Weston said.
Bosnich, who has been receiving treatment for depression at The Priory, a clinic at Roehampton in west London, was getting better "slowly".
"He remains under the care of a psychologist for severe clinical depression," Weston said.
Bosnich, who was officially sacked by Chelsea less than 24 hours ago, has until tomorrow to prepare a written defence to a charge of having tested positive to cocaine.

Bosnich still has a future: Farina
February 7 2003 By London Australian coach Frank Farina said Mark Bosnich still had a future in elite soccer despite his setback against drugs charges. Bosnich's next step could be an employment tribunal if his lawyers decide against appealing to another soccer body over his sacking by English Premier League club Chelsea. Bosnich tested positive to cocaine last November. Farina said Bosnich, 31, still had a future in the game and would overcome his ordeal. "Without doubt, Mark's got a future," said Farina, who is in London for Australia's match against England next Wednesday. "In terms of a goalkeeper, Mark's still very young - look at (England keeper) David Seaman still playing at 38. ");document.write(" advertisement "He's still got a big future in the game. "But at the moment he's going through a bit of a difficult time, but he's a mentally strong lad and I think he'll come through it." Farina said if Bosnich returned to his best he would be considered for the Socceroos.

Bosnich faces bleak future after appeal loss
February 6 2003 Mark Bosnich faces a year out of soccer and a possible end to his playing career after losing his appeal against dismissal for drug use by London club Chelsea. The former Socceroo goalkeeper has seven days to take his case to a Football League appeals board and could launch civil action against the club for back pay following his suspension from his STG42,000 ($A117,000)-a-week contract late last year. "We're going to study the judgment and will then decide whether to appeal within the timescale," a member of Bosnich's legal team said. But the Australian still faces a Football Association charge of misconduct after testing positive to cocaine, which could carry a worldwide year ban from the sport. Bosnich, who lives in west London with girlfriend Sophie Anderton, a model who has a well-documented history of battles with drugs and alcohol, checked into a private clinic to be treated for depression after failing the drug test last November. Lleyton's $19m not enough to unseat the Shark
November 27 2002 Lleyton Hewitt's relentless chasing of tennis balls earned him the world No.1 crown and nearly $19 million this year but it wasn't enough to head off Greg Norman as Australia's richest sports person. According to Business Review Weekly's annual list of the top 50 sports earners, Norman retained his top ranking with gross income - estimated from all sources - of $24,600,000 this year. Norman has been far and away Australia's best earner in sport for many years but Hewitt closed the gap this year with Norman's income halved in the past 12 months after he pulled in nearly $50 million in 2001. Hewitt, who won 61 of the 76 tennis matches he played on the ATP Tour, earned $18.8 million - half of which came from prize money. Norman on the other hand, played only 14 tournaments on the US PGA Tour and his world wide earnings on the golf course were a little over $1 million. ");document.write("

Bosnich quits Old Trafford and heads to Chelsea
by Mark Bradley
Goalkeeper Mark Bosnich yesterday brought his long running problems at Manchester United to an end and signed for Chelsea on a free transfer.
The former Aston Villa keeper was released by United yesterday after being left out of the first team squad for most of the season.
Chelsea immediately added the 29 year old Australian international to their ranks on a three and a half year contract, but warned him the ‘‘competition for the number one jersey will be tough’’.
Chelsea managing director Colin Hutchinson said: ‘‘This is another in our list of quality free transfer signings.
‘‘I was alerted that Mark was likely to become available on a free whilst having a break in Dubai. The whole operation was planned from there.
‘‘Mark met with Claudio Ranieri and our goalkeeping coach Giorgio Pellizarro. ‘They know the player but not the person and were impressed. We are delighted he has chosen Chelsea.
‘‘Top teams need three quality keepers. We now have four in Mark, Ed de Goey, Carlo Cudicini and Kevin Hitchcock. We also have exciting young prospect Rhys Evans.’’
De Goey had never been dropped since his arrival at Stamford Bridge until, after successive poor performances, he lost his place to Cudicini for the New Year’s Day clash with Aston Villa and the young Italian has kept his place since then.
