Indian soccer's English summer
Saibal Bose Bury, a second division soccer club in England, were a little worried. Injuries were piling up and their latest recruit from India wasn't getting his work permit. That was last week and the dimunitive Indian, the first ever to receive an English call-up, waited in Delhi for word from Bury. The message finally arrived on Wednesday, and Baichung Bhutia started off on his one-way trip to England. The journey has started for Bhaichung Bhutia: a journey no Indian has undertaken before and his Indian fans are keeping their fingers crossed. He has talent in abundance, but doubts still persist about the physique bit. How will the small-built Indian standing just 5"6, face the big defenders in English soccer? That, only Bhutia can. The Bhutia story began about 23 years ago in Sikkim where his parents were moderately well off. ``I could have picked up any game, but I wanted to play football.'' Bhutia grew up in a surrounding where the game is a passion and he too was smitten by it. He learned his dribbling skillson the fields of Gangtok. Early nineties found him in Calcutta with bigger things in mind. Picked up by East Bengal, Bhutia was soon to become an important part of their team. A few other players came into prominence along with him. In fact, in '93 he blossomed in the shadows of teammates like Carlton Chapman and Kiron Khongsai. The glare was on Chapman after he scored three goals in East Bengal's 6-2 win over Iraq's Al Zawra in Asia Cup Winners Cup. Bhutia remained on the fringes. For the next year couple of years, Bhutia still in his teens, was at the forefront of the East Bengal attack. By '95, he was an integral part of the Indian team, managing the attack with IM Vijayan. He scored twice for India against Sri Lanka in the SAARC tournament and then fetched them a victory over Uzbekistan in the Nehru Cup. Those were his early games for India and he went on to play in 40 games scoring 25 goals till left to play for Bury.

Try spotting a Brit in the English Premier League
IAN HAWKEY, London
A LETTER from the British prime minister to his Home Office has guaranteed Tony Blair's government great popularity in Middlesbrough. Blair, who represents the north-east consitituency where Boro train, wrote in support of Juninho's application for an English work permit, enabling the midfielder to rejoin Boro. It worked. The Brazilian is now available to make his long-awaited return to the club, although he is unlikely to play at Leeds today. Although Juninho is among the most popular players to have graced the Premiership in recent seasons, Blair's role may have been decisive. The laws governing non-European soccer players in England are complex and often stringent - as Leeds's South African skipper Lucas Radebe has experienced - and because Juninho, despite his great talent and energy, has not been playing regularly for Brazil, his case was in the balance. Foreign players are making up a higher and higher proportion of the professionals in England, and the players' union, seeking to protect English jobs, are increasingly concerned. Not a week goes by in English soccer without the pros and cons of foreign players being debated in bars, TV studios and newspaper columns.

A football team has 11 players and in a match two teams compete to put the ball in each other's goalpost. They are allowed to kick, or hit, the ball with their head, but only the goalkeeper can handle it. The team that scores the most goals is the winner. Player of the Year

I am an American and I am doing a project on football (soccer) in India for my school. I play football myself and am interested about the sport in other cultures. I have found some news articles from online Indian newspapers and have gotten a lot of information from indianfootball.com. I am interested more in the youth system and how popular the sport is in the country. But everything is valuable information to me. But I am looking for more than just facts. I would greatly appreciate if you could tell me anything you wanted about the game, whether you played it, the difficulty for oppurtunity, anything you want. Sports News Asian Games football tournament: Baichung sinks Bangladesh Korea, Oman start on winning note AFP, Busan Sept 27: Baichung Bhutia scored two second half goals to help India on their way to a 3-0 win over an underprepared Bangladesh in Group C of the Asian Games football tournament here on Friday. The Bangladeshi footballers came straight to the tournament after a tiring domestic league and paid for not being able to run a training camp before the Asiad. They drew a friendly match with a Bangkok club on way to Busan while Indians have been touring abroad for different tournaments, playing more than 15 competitive matches in their build up for the Games. Naturally, India had edged a dull first half and deservedly took the lead in the first minute after the break when the 26-year-old Bhutia latched on to a cross from Samir Naik to head the opener beneath the body of the Bangladesh goalkeeper Biplab Bhattachariya. Bhutia, the first Indian to play professionally in the English league when he signed for second division side Bury, made it 2-0 in the 65th minute when he scored with a smart left-foot effort, tucking away Wangkheirakpam Singh's through ball.
