February 23, 2002: BHUTIA WANT TO STAY AT BURY
February 20, 2002:
Indian star striker Baichung Bhutia wants to stay at Bury. He hopes, that his contract will be extended as soon as possible. Bhutia: "I’ve had a discussion with the manager and I have told him I would definitely like to stay. No decision has been made yet. I need games and Andy Preece wants to see how I have recovered from my injury before offering me a new contract. The club haven’t approached me about a new contract, but if they do I will definitely sit down with my agent and consider it. Whether I would sign depends on what the club put on the table, but I would like to stay at Gigg Lane and I need to get fit to prove I should be offered another contract. I haven’t had any contact with any other clubs. There was interest from some teams in Singapore last year but I never really spoke about the possibility of joining them. BHUTIA HOPING FOR QUICK COMEBACK
February 13, 2002:
Baichung Bhutia started rehabilitation and hopes to be training again in five or six weeks’ time. "I am able to walk without crutches and I am doing a lot of strengthening exercises for my knee. I am also doing a lot of work in the water that will hopefully help the recovery process. Obviously I want to play before the end of the season and I think I can. But I haven’t seen the doctor who operated on me yet so it’s hard to say for sure." BHUTIA BACK IN ENGLAND

Welcome to Indian Soccer on the Internet
    Indian Soccer News
Firstly, this is a letter I wrote today to some of the leading dailies in india to promote Soccer in the coutry and bring it into some parity with cricket - in terms with both money and fame. "Dear Sir/Madam: I would like to make a suggestion to you regarding the sports content of your newspaper. Cricket has established itself as major sport in India with money, success and a future for it and it will not step down from the success it has had with the masses. It is logical now that another sport be given more coverage and opportunity and that would be Indian Football (soccer). I know that the leagues in India are not comparable to those of Europe or South America let alone those of South East Asia. But, should India try to send a team of substance to the World Cup, it will only be possible if the sport is given more recognition and sponsors. A number of Indians abroad (including myself) as well as a heap of Indians in India itself, share the same view and would encourage you to increase the coverage of this sliding sport and change the course of our sporting tradition (for a better one obviously).

    Music
    Sufi Music

" Sufi music means any music that connects with the heart. It is the music of submission and surrender that bonds humans to God and transcends all religious boundaries". Contemporary singers like the late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Abida Parveen from Pakistan, Shubha Mudgal of India, Mohammed El-Sheikh Juma of Sudan, Roomi of Iran, Whirling Dervishes of Turkey, Baul singers from Bangladesh or even pop groups like Junoon have all contributed in re-vitalizing this unique form of religious singing. Lifestyle Pakistan's Street Food is a feast for the senses and offers anything from a light snack to a full meal, at any time from early morning to well past midnight. Every region has its own special cuisine, which makes eating out an endless adventure. Football Baichung Bhutia
The tattoo on his right arm speaks of the intense love this young Sikkimese has for the sport - it is a meticulously imprinted picture of footballer in action. When he was a kid he would scan newspapers to see if there was any football match being aired on TV. If yes, he would take a three-hour bus ride from his native Tinkitam to Gangtok to watch the matches as his village had no television sets. Bhutia is today the only Indian footballer to play professional club soccer in England. He was selected by second division club F.C. Bury for its squad - and it was a dream come true to play against the likes of David Beckham and Andy Cole of Manchester United in an Exhibition Match.

China delivered a harsh football lesson to the minnows Bangladesh as they stormed to a 3-0 victory in the Asiad soccer tournament at Masan Main Stadium on Monday.
It's the second consecutive win for China in their Group C matches.
The fast and skillful China proved to be more than a class above its opponent as it came out merciless and created a string of scoring chances.
Chinese head coach Shen Xiangfu, however, was not satisfied with his players' performance in the first half.
"It's too late for them to find the rhythm of the match, "said Shen, "and too many mistakes in the first half."
Wang Xinxin, the scoring leader of the Chinese first division, opened the scoring in the 34th minute following several well-knit passes among his teammates.
Bangladesh goalkeeper Biplab Bhattacharjee became the hero of his team, making several great saves to blunt the blistering attack of China.

'India now has its best side
    in a long time'
B etween cricket and football, Indians, quite unambiguously, choose the gentleman's game. But soccer remains the sport that most Indians love to watch, so long as India is not playing. However, one man, who hit the Indian soccer scene about a decade ago, is changing the queer indifference with which the game is viewed in the country. He has himself attained star status and is taking football to new heights of popularity. Meet Bhaichung 'The Scorpion' Bhutia, the face of modern Indian football. Bhutia, who hails from a remote village in Sikkim, stormed the football scene as a diminutive 16-year-old, emerging the 'Best Player' in the 1992 Subroto Cup. His scintillating performance three years later in the Nehru Cup cemented his place in Indian football. Having seen all that had to be seen in Indian soccer, he then looked West-ward, and two summers ago became the first Asian-born player to score a goal in an English professional league while playing for Bury FC. Before joining Bury, the nimble-footed striker unsuccessfully tried his luck with Fulham FC, Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion. Bhutia spoke to M. Chhaya

    FULHAM 2 INDIA
Saturday 22nd July 2000 BY THE BANKS OF THE SPARKLING RIVER THAMES on a scorching July afternoon, footballing history has just been made. Stevenage Road is awash with the rich orange and green of the Indian flag, and Craven Cottage's old red brick facade is the unlikely backdrop for soccer's cultural revolution. On the Putney Terrace, bathed in bright sunshine under a clear blue sky, hundreds of dharma chakras flutter bravely in the slight breeze that provides a welcome relief from the heat, and the golden boy of Indian football, Baichung Bhutia, makes his way to the players' tunnel.

Baichung Bhutia attempts a scissor kick
Karlheinz Riedle heads towards goal Fulham have beaten India here this afternoon with two goals from experienced German international Karlheinz Riedle. Sweeping in the first just before half time after four attempts were blocked by the resolute Indian defence and then, as India's dreams of a momentous victory dwindled in the mid-afternoon sunshine, pouncing upon a mistake by goalkeeper and defender to seal the tie. In all honesty, Fulham were always on top in this game - they enjoyed the lion's share of the possession and never moved out of cruise control all afternoon. Yet India can take a lot from the match, not least the stubborness of their four defenders - Prabhjot Singh, Mahesh Gawli, Daljit Singh and Roberto Fernandes - all playing in front of the agile stand-in goalkeeper Virender Singh - when faced with the sharpness of Riedle and the power of Kevin Betsy. The Indians' impressive rearguard action however did not make for an exciting time up front where Bury's Bhutia met up again with JCT Mills strike partner I.M. Vijayan, only to be denied a clear run on goal all afternoon by a formidable team of Chris Coleman and Andy Melville.

    South Asian Soccer Supremacy
India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Bangladesh and Pakistan battled it out at Goa's Nehru Stadium in Margao for South Asian soccer supremacy, in the South Asian Football Federation Coca Cola Cup tournament from April 22 to May 1. The gleaming trophy was, however, retained by hosts India by outsmarting Bangla Desh 2-1. Scintillating
goals by skipper Bruno Coutinho and Baichung Bhutia earned India a well deserved 2-0 victory over spirited Bangla Desh, to lift the glittering SAFF Coca Cola Football Cup in the finals at the Nehru Stadium in Goa on May 1. Guitars, cymbals, ghumots and crackersthe trappings of the Goa Carnavalwere all there while the crowd cheered, and India applied pressure and dominated the proceedings. Despite the territorial superiority, the Indian forwards failed to connect passes effectively, giving the impression that the vibrant Bangla Deshis, who put a fine display to defeat Nepal in the semis, would carry the day. In the 25th minute, however, India’s mercurial forward Baichung Bhutia, worked his way through the Bangla Desh defence maze and minussed the ball to Bruno Coutinho from the left flank. Bruno, with a penchant for placing himself within the scoring range, crowned India’s first-half dominance with a rasping drive to give India 1-0 lead. Bhutia scored a beautiful goal in the last minute of the first half to raise the tally to 2-0.

    SOCCER Indian Football:
    Yesterday's Promise,
Tomorrow's Glory Noel da Lima Leitao 's prescription for restoring Indian football to its former glory R In India, Football - quite correctly - has always been considered a sport of the masses. Indeed in most gullies hardware was not complemented with any software to maximise its potential. Significantly, the non-availability of football-specific coaching, took its toll on these players and consequently, the game in India was consigned to a back seat in the global arena. dilettante. The fact remains that unless children can enjoy extensive ball contact, they will never develop the skills and field vision required to play the game at any decent level. But even in later years, when the players have established themselves, coaches also invariably ignore the need to polish fundamental skills on an ongoing basis and spectators are often given a less than scintillating performance in terms of erratic passing, heading and tackling. Ever heard a spectator at a football match say about a player that he is not fit? He is probably right since, even on televised matches, we have seen players writhing on the field with cramps, a distinct sign that his physical preparation for a competitive game of football has been less than adequate.
