Attention all Fans:
First of all, It's great to finally see that I am not alone as a fan of Slippery Rock Joe. I had three reasons for setting up this site, and we have now accomplished two of those goals.
  • 1)To educate fans about Joey.
  • 2)To bring the fans throughout the country(world) together. And of course the ultimate goal...
  • 3)To have Mullen's number hanging in the Igloo.
I attended the Pens/Rangers game March 19 and mentioned Mullen to Tom Rooney (Penguins COO) in an interview during the first intermission. We both agreed and are pretty confident that Joey will most likely be inducted into the Hockey Hall Of Fame this year. This will be great. The step will more than likely lead to the retiring of his jersey. (Note: The retiring portion did not come from Rooney). Tom Condon sent me an e-mail with a write up on Joey. I decided to share it with you. Tom Condon's Article Thank you again for the support and keep the signatures coming. - Ken

Growing up in the heart of New York City and not having hockey skates until the age of 10 are just a couple of the obstacles Joseph Mullen overcame to become the preeminent U.S.-born NHL player of his era. Joe was born in Hell's Kitchen, New York on February 26, 1957. He was born to Tom and Marion Mullen, who would be instrumental in steering a young Joe through the proper choices in life. He learned his early hockey skills on the street wearing roller skates and with a role of electrical tape in place of the puck. His father worked at Madison Square Garden and would frequently bring home discarded sticks for Joe and his brother Brian to use. Joe finally received his first pair of skates at age 10 and instantly began to flourish. He would play four seasons in the New York Metro Junior Hockey League and during his final season against weaker competition recorded unheard of totals with 110 goals and 182 points in only 40 games. The next season 1975-76, Mullen was off to play for the Boston College Eagles, however, unlike most aspiring hockey players, Boston College was unable to offer him a scholarship and he was forced to spend $700 to get through the year. They money proved to be well worth it though, gaining a full ride for the next three seasons, his final two of which he was a 1st Team All-American. Following his final year in Boston, 1978-79, Mullen had his first opportunity to represent his country at the World Championships in Moscow, recording 8 points in 8 games.

    Joey Mullen
The most prolific scoring American-born player in NHL history received little fanfare when he played in his final NHL game. But that type of exit seemed to symbolize the career of Joe Mullen. Mullen, an ultimate team player who neversought the individual spotlight, retired the same night as Mario Lemieux. Who would have ever guessed that a kid from New York's tough Hell's Kitchen neighborhood would ever make the National Hockey League! He and his brother Brian (who also enjoyed a lengthy NHL career) used to have to carry axes in their equipment bags as a form of self protection. Mullen's 16-year NHL career was spent with the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins. Although never flashy, he was a consistent goal scoring threat and a great team player. A gentleman on the ice, he was awarded the Lady Byng Trophy on two occasions. But he will always be remembered as the first U.S.-born player to score 500 career goals and the first American to record 1,000 career points. Mullen's hockey career began at Boston College where he recorded 212 points in 111 games for the Eagles. He then played three years with Salt Lake of the CHL where he was named the league's top rookie during the 1979-80 season. The following year, he led the CHL in scoring with 117 points and was named the league MVP.

February 2000 UP Close Pittsburgh Penguin Joe Mullen By PSR Joe Mullen played five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins and captured two Stanley Cups. Mullen scored 30 or more goals in three consecutive seasons as a Pen, netting 42 in 1991-92. Mullen was known as a hard-working sniper who paid as much attention to his defensive assignments as he did to scoring goals. Raised in the tough streets on New York's Hell's Kitchen, Joe and his brother Brian took what they learned playing street hockey and parlayed it into successful NHL careers. In March, 1997, Mullen scored career goal No. 500 of his career, becoming the first American-born player to do so, and along with Jari Kurri, only the second non-Canadian player to score 500 goals in the NHL. Joe retired as the leading American-born scorer in the history of the NHL, and now is working in the front office for the Pens. PSR Associate Editor Tony DeFazio sat down with Mullen after a recent Pens' practice at Iceoplex to discuss the 20th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid, N.Y., at the 1980 Olympics, the state of U.S. amateur hockey and Mullen's own contributions to the sport. PSR: How did a little guy from Hell's Kitchen become one of the top hockey players in American history? How did you start playing ice hockey?
