Our Sponsors Unruly Sharks drop another Winless streak extended to four games One of the biggest problems Darryl Sutter inherited when he took over as head coach of the Sharks back in 1997 was San Jose lack of discipline. Sutter has been gone for a little over a month and that lack of discipline reared its ugly head on Thursday night as St Louis took advantage of poor decision making by the Sharks en route to a 4-1 win at Hp Pavilion. Poor judgment by Owen Nolan and Scott Thornton , combined with a brain lapse by Bryan Marchment cost the Sharks against a conference opponent. Things looked rosy for the Sharks early, but things would soon sour. Vincent Damphousse opened the scoring with a power play goal by poking in a deflection off Blues goaltender Brent Johnson at 3:45 of the 1st period after Tyson Nash was sent off for diving. Damphousse was trolling around the crease when a blast off Jim Fahey's stick from the blueline bounced off Johnson and landed just inside the left post.

Four different Sharks scored goals to lift San Jose over the host Blues 4-1. Evgeni Nabokov bounced back from a brutal performance in Pittsburgh with 32 saves to help the Sharks stay out of the Pacific Division cellar. Nabokov would have shutout the Blues had Scott Hannan not redirected a shot late in the 3rd period during one of five power play opportunities for St Louis in the period. Scott Mellanby was credited with the goal after Blues defenseman Al MacInnis fired the puck from the right point and hit Hannan on the skate. "In the end when it's all said and done, we scored the power-play goal that set the game up,'' San Jose coach Darryl Sutter said. "They had trouble with their power play in the first period. Special teams were important tonight.''

"I don't think anyone on this team (cares) who they are," Mellanby said during the off-day practice Monday. "We have in our own media about how we're close to asking them for autographs after the game. I don't think we over-respect this team at all. I think maybe you guys (media) do. They're a great hockey team but we're a great hockey team too. We're certainly not intimidated by them." The outburst might as well have jumped right over the notebooks and microphones into the minds of Mellanby's teammates. If they didn't hear his comments in the locker room they soon read them.
