1995: BU 5, BC 1
BU wins it going away By Joe Concannon, Globe Staff, 02/14/1995
They lowered the Beanpot curtain for the final time in 66-year-old Boston Garden last night, a suitably nostalgic occasion in the barn on Causeway Street that has staged 42 of the tournament's 43 renditions. The Beanpot has been a town-and-gown occasion in the building through parts of five decades, and this was a night for the 14,448 who managed to secure a ticket to became part of Garden lore before it gives way to Shawmut Center later this year. There was a good dose of deja vu for the Boston University faithful who have been a part of the school's tradition here. The Terriers have been the dominant team in the Beanpot since the mid-'60s. Coach Jack Parker, who won three titles as a player and had been an assistant coach before taking over the reins in the mid-1970s, kept saying how nice it would be to hoist the last Beanpot on Garden ice. So they went out against Green Line rival Boston College and showed why they were the preseason pick to be the nation's No. 1 team, erupting for three goals within 3:34 of the second period en route to a 5-1 victory that clinched the first leg of Eastern college hockey's triple crown.

College Hockey Report, 1995 October 16
On April 1st, BU defeated Maine for the national title. Since then, we've waited, we've bided our time, it's been a long six and a half months, but at long last the time is upon us....it's College Hockey season again. And this weeked Southern California got its annual dose of the college game with the seventh annual Great Western Freeze-Out. The first semifinal, at the Forum in LA, pitted defending champion Maine against the CCHA's Miami University of Ohio. It looked early on like the Black Bears, last year's NCAA runnerup, would dominate, as Maine's Tony Frenette scored just 13 seconds into the contest. But the Redskins wouldn't go down that easy, coming back from 3-1 and 5-2 deficits to close the margin to a single goal. But in the end the Hockey East powerhouse staved them off, as Scott Parmentier scored his second goal short-handed with three minutes remaining in the third to put Maine up 6-4. Miami scored late, but in the end they were one break short of the upset, falling 6-5. The other semi pitted Hockey East doormat Boston College and Michigan State of the CCHA. The Eagles spent much of the first period on the offensive, outshooting the Spartans 12-8, but came away with nothing, as Michigan State led 2-0 at the intermission. Anson Carter made that 3-0 on a short-handed breakaway in the second, but BC came back with Tom Ashe's shorthander, and David Hymovitz scored on the power play to bring the Eagles to within 3-2 in the third. Late in the game, though, the Spartans put it away with two goals in two minutes: Chris Bogas assisted on Richard Keyes's second score and then lit the lamp to ice the Spartans' 5-2 victory.

Goaltender Emery shines in 2nd straight shutout, Senators win 8-0
By Brian Waschman
Staff Writer Seven is the number of different Binghamton Senators that scored. Eight is the number of goals that were scored. Zero is the number of goals that Ray Emery gave up. And two is probably the most significant number for the Sens - it's the number of points they picked up in the standings for the second consecutive night. "It's a big win for everybody," said winger Alex Giroux. "Everybody had a goal. Everybody played well defensively. The goalie had a shutout - everything is positive in the locker room right now." After a 45-minute closed-door meeting with head coach John Paddock and a 2-0 win over the Norfolk Admirals - a team that carried in the best record of the 28-team American Hockey League - the B-Sens kept the momentum going by slaughtering the Canadian division-leading Hamilton Bulldogs 8-0 on Saturday night. "John kind of gave it to us a little bit," Emery said. "We came out hard and we haven't looked back since."

A trade freeze has gone into effect until the completion of the waiver draft that will be held at 4 PM EST on Friday. As I'm sure you remember, the Islanders picked up Chris Osgood in last year's draft. Chances are the Islanders won't pick up anyone as the best player available is the grim reaper, Stu Grimson. One interesting note is that former Islanders Dick Tarnstrom, Ray Giroux, Dave Roche and Ken Sutton are all unprotected. Below is the complete list of protected and unprotected players.
