Chess Shirov sues the World Chess Council 11 October 2000 Alexei Shirov is taking the World Chess Council (WCC) to court! The Spanish Grandmaster was left without money or a world championship match after he had defeated Vladimir Kramnik over two years ago in a match to decide the challenger to Garry Kasparov. Kramnik got duly paid for the match, but Shirov was promised his prize money in the supposedly following world championship match. Shirov never signed any type of contract for the match, however.
As most of us know, this match never happened, and Shirov has continuously kept the issue in the public eye, demanding his money and a shot at the title.
Shirov is demanding the sum of $1,300,000. The original agreement between Shirov, Kasparov and match organizer Luis Rentero was that Shirov get $1,300,000 for winning against Kasparov and $600,000 for losing. Both Rentero and Kasparov say that the cancellation of the Kasparov-Shirov match was not their responsibility.

Alexei Shirov won his final-round game against Akopian in artistic fashion to win Merida 2000 by a half-point over Judit Polgar, who drew her game.
Hernandez-Polgar was a short draw. Akopian played the French Winawer, Ba5 line. They castled on opposite wings and Akopian sacked the exchange on f3. But Shirov broke through in the center and chased black's king across the board, then deftly exchanged down to a winning king-and-pawn endgame. Shirov was up 3 pawns to 2 and stopped black's pawns with his king, so Akopian resigned after 47 moves, giving the championship to Shirov.

Last year I wrote about my "Bronstein summers" . This year (1998) I'm having a "Shirov summer". I was working my way through Bronstein's excellent book of Zurich '53 (all games, not just Bronstein's), but I got side-tracked. I bought a copy of GM Alexei Shirov's Fire On Board and I have not been able to put it down! There are few novels as compelling as this chess book, and only classic novels at that. This is a classic chess book. It's divided into three sections. The first section is a chronological collection of 82, "best" games. "Best" is an uninspired word to attach to this book. "Remarkable", "thought-provoking", and "brilliant" are better adjectives. The second, smaller, section contains a sixteen games of the Botvinnik variation and the third section has 13 endgames. I am a Shirov partisan, but now that I've got the book I think I can justifiably call myself a real fan. I have a love of the wild and the beautiful and Shirov's games are abundantly wild and beautiful. I feel like I've fallen into some strange world where knights and bishops are worth more than queens and rooks, and where not one of three connected passers can be promoted! It's tempting to say that Shirov is a magician, but the truth is better than that. He's

Viswanathan Anand added a fourth world- level title to his collection this year as he rebounded strongly from a first-game loss to beat veteran Anatoly Karpov of Russia 4-2, in the final of the sixth edition of the Corsica Open chess tournament played in Bastia, France. Over the last three months Anand has won the Eurotel title in Prague in May, followed by the Chess Classic of Mainz title in July, the World Cup in Hyderabad in October and now the Corsica Open. In the final against Karpov, another former FIDE World champion like Anand, the Indian lost the first game but bounced back to win the next with white pieces and send the match into a play-off. They drew the next two before Anand won the last two games played in the blitz format. This was the first match in the knockout stage where Anand had been stretched beyond the normal two-game match. In what turned out to be a thrilling days event, the finals proved every bit an entertainer with both the finalists matching each other in rapid and blitz chess. But Anand showed that he had greater desire to win the Euro 20000 top prize, as he dug in deep to equalise 1-1 after a first game defeat. Two rapid draws later, Anand struck deadly in the fifth game with black pieces and finished with a final salvo mating Karpov in the sixth game.

Dec 07 Day 11 - Men Report Round 5 Game 2 Anand meets Ivanchuk, Svidler takes on Ponomariov Games: Viewer PGN
Defending Champion Viswanathan Anand of India takes on his long time Ukraine foe Vassily Ivanchuk in the first semi finals, while another young Ukraine Grandmaster Ponomariov who stormed into the last four with an upset win over seasoned Bareev, takes on three time Russian Champion Peter Svidler. Anand qualified with a quiet 1.5-0.5 victory over Shirov, while the rest of the semi final qualifiers made it through tie break victories. Anand cruises to semi final, others in tie breaks Shirov, Alexei (ESP) 1/2-1/2 Anand, Viswanathan (IND)
Ruthless !! Its the only word that can describe Vishy's draw with black pieces against Shirov today. If, having seen the "Madras Tiger" doing it in the second round against Dane Nielsen, wasn't enough, Vishy repeated it against a different and stronger opponent with as much ease and felicity. It just takes Anand two matches away from retaining the title he won at Tehran. The French of today, was more of surprise value and at regular intervals the pieces were seen moving out of the board. It should have baffled Shirov, the way Anand went about securing the draw. The double rook and knight ending, was dry as dead wood and Shirov gave up, losing to Anand for the third time in FIDE Knock Outs viz., Groningen, Tehran and Moscow. The Indian waits for the result of the Ivanchuk-Lautier match, with the in-form Ukraine Grandmaster pitting it against the French ace Lautier. Noticeably Chucky didn't trouble Lautier much, and in the tie breaks it could be anybody's game.
