Woman's World Champion GM Susan (zsuzsa) polgar Delights All at Boston Universityby Jack Litwinsky, 3/27/97 From chess Horizons, MayJuly, 1997.

Woman's World Champion GM Susan (Zsuzsa) Polgar Delights All at Boston University
by Jack Litwinsky, 3/27/97
From Chess Horizons , May-July, 1997 In a rare Boston appearance (she was in Boston in 1993 and 1985 at the BCC), Grandmaster Susan Polgar gave a free lecture to the students and friends of Boston University. Invited by the Boston University Chess Club to give a talk, GM Polgar chose to present favorite games from each of the Polgar sisters, highlighting differences in their playing styles. Allan Ong, president of the BU Chess Club, introduced the Champion. The talk would not have happened without Allan's hard work and that of other club members and club advisor Assistant Dean Robert Oresick. Many members of the Boston chess community joined the students for this wonderful event. Susan first went over a famous game of her sister Judit which Judit played when she was only 14 years old. The game was played on national television in the then East Germany. We learned from this game that Judit's secret move is a well-timed g4! Well, I think the secret is out, but she still loves to play this move according to Susan. Susan then went over one of her sister Szofia's games. We learned that perhaps Szofia's rating could be higher, but she likes to let her creative nature take over and will play for a beautiful game whenever she can, even passing up more obvious, practical and mundane wins.

Judit Polgar reigns without a crown
``I think that chess is the type of game which belongs entirely to men. In a contest like chess one is trying to assert oneself, to prove the supremacy of one's own ego. Women have a different psychology.'' - Garry Kasparov ``I could cede the odds of a knight to any woman player and still beat her easily.'' - Bobby Fischer JUDIT POLGAR was not born when Fischer said that. She was only nine when Kasparov more or less agreed with him thus. At 15 Judit became the youngest Grandmaster in the history of chess. Who was holding that record for the past 33 years? Fischer, considered by many as the greatest chess player ever. That was something not even Kasparov, the strongest player of all time, could do. She hasn't beaten the great Russian yet, but she did come close on a couple of occasions. She is one player who will be missed in the Delhi championship. What makes this good-looking Hungarian girl special is not just the fact that she is the greatest female chess player ever by a long distance, but that she has proved herself in the extremely competitive men's game at the highest level. Unfortunately Judit is not discussed when we talk about the world's greatest sportswomen, because she happens to play in a less glamorous sport.

"Independen-Objektif-Tanpa Prasangka" JUDIT UNSURE OF PRO CAREER AFTER MARRIAGE SANUR, Bali (JP) : The past ten years must have been a memorable period for top women chess player Judit Polgar of Hungary. In 1991, at age 14, she earned her Grand Master (GM) title making her the youngest chess grand master in history. But then love came calling and soon she might have to consider her future career as professional chess player. The choice must be the toughest one for any woman chess player. There have been seven women world chess champions but several of them never married. Except for one, the others never gave birth while they were world champion. The exception was Judit's eldest sister Zsuzsa Polgar. Zsuzsa, 30, gave birth to a baby boy named Tom, at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City in March, 1999, while she still held the world champion title. She lost her title to Grand Master Xie Jun of China three months later. Judit's second sister, Sofia, an International Master (IM), is married to grand master Yona Kosashvili, a Georgian.

Articles About Judit Polgar June 3, 2000 The Hindu
An Icon of Women's Chess
JUDIT POLGAR is a legendary personality not only in women's chess where she is an all-time great but to sportswomen in general. No sportswoman has been in the best ten of their men's discipline, which is quite unique. She made news by winning the Japfa Classic 2000 Chess Tournament at the Bali Beach Hotel in Indonesia on May 2, finishing ahead of former world champion Anatoly Karpov and the reigning FIDE champion Alexander Khalifman. Scoring four victories and five draws, she totalled 6.5 points from nine games and finished half a point ahead of Karpov and Khalifman. She picked up the first prize of 20,000 dollars. It was one of her career best victories. Judit arrived on the chess world in the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad when she and her two sisters representing Hungary ended the gold hunt of the mighty Soviet Union which was backed by Georgia's tradition. She played the pivotal role in Hungary's triumph. In 1989 she stormed into the No.1 position in the women's rating list which she still holds. The difference between her and the next nearest was at times larger than 100 Elo, an edge Kasparov never enjoyed on the men's list. Her career is dotted with several firsts. Judit is the only girl to win a boy's (under-14) world championship when she did that in 1989. She broke the 33-year record of Bobby Fischer to become the youngest men's Grandmaster at 15 years and five months.

Reviewed by Jeremy Silman I originally ran into the Polgars in New York 1988 (where I played Judit) and, since that time, I have chatted with the whole family in Mazatlan, seen Zsuzsa in Pardubice (Czech Republic), ran into Sophia in Brazil (sorry, the dates are hazy) and chatted with Judit in Monte Carlo. On each occasion I recall being amazed at how sweet and down to earth these famous young ladies are. No superiority complexes, no raging egos, just good and highly interesting people. Over the years I have heard many stories about their family, and lots of gossip about every aspect of their lives. Some of it I found to be true, other anecdotes were quickly tossed into the rubbish bin. It was often difficult to know what was really going on, so this biography of the Polgar family (concentrating mainly on Zsuzsa) was something I read with considerable interest. Let's start with the positive: the book offers an insider look at Laszlo Polgar's training methods. It also gives you a feel of the difficulties the family, and Zsuzsa, encountered in Hungary and in chess circles. Her ongoing war with the male establishment, her tournament adventures, her battle to win the woman's world championship, the many fine (and well-placed) photos, and the annotated games at the end of the book make it well worth the $24.95.
