20th Annual Sands Regency Western States Open, Reno, Nevada
October 18-20, 2002
A final total of 376 players divided in 7 sections showed up to amidst an atmosphere that resembled a chess festival. On Thursday, Ken Walker, and George Fischer scored wins and Craig Christian drew among Nevadans that played John Donaldson in a clock simul. Jonathon Reyes scored one of the 3 victories against Andrew Soltis. Frank Gray won the second section of the WBCA Blitz with a 10-1 score after a tiebreak game. Edwin Straver and Arkia Bayata had respectable scores in Section One. In the Open section, David Vigorito defeated Alexander Ivanov. David said he had played him over 20 times and this was his first victory against him in a Najdorf Sicilian. Just before round two, John Trivett was honored for coming to Reno to play and Jerry was presented with his State Championship trophy. In Round 3, Enrico Sevilano drew GM Alex Wojkiewicz. Frank Gray, in the A section was up three pawns, on the rook file and drew his opponent. In Round four, John Currell's brilliant pawn push to f6 won what I thought was a nice game. In round six, GM Igor Novikov drew very quickly to win the Open tournament outright. GM Hikura Nakamura tried to squeeze victory from Ricardo Guzman to tie but finally was held to a draw. Nevadans Ryan Van Reken won the "C" section outright and Tim Connolly won the "D" section outright. Anyone with at least 4½ points won some prize money if you check the point results below.

US-China Chess Summit Match 2001
Round 2: USA 5 China 5
The American team captain Nick de Firmian decided to use his three reserve players in the second duel. Joel Benjamin replaced a rather tired Alexander Ivanov, US Women's co champion Elina Groberman took the spot of Camilla Baginskaite and the youngest player of this event, 13 year old Hikaru Nakamura got the opportunity to play Chinese junior Ni Hua. A few hours into the match all looked rosy for the American team and another victory seemed in the air. The Chinese players defended well and after nearly six hours of fighting a 5-5 result was penciled in on the score board. Half way this competition the US team is leading by the smallest margin possible, a half point.
The round started earlier than the previous one as the players and officials were invited for a dinner hosted by Washington State Governor Gary Locke and his wife Mona. Boris Gulko made sure he would be there in time by having a swift draw with China's strongest player Ye Jiangchuan. Irina Krush followed this example and scored her second half point for team USA. A nice achievement considering that Irina's opponent has 120 rating points more.
