Kramnik says he is unnerved by the computer's power
World chess champion Vladimir Kramnik is taking on the world's most powerful chess computer in a competition that has been billed by its organisers as a "last chance for human intelligence". The Russian chess master will battle Deep Fritz in an eight-day battle of eight games in Bahrain in October.
Kasparov: Kramnik beat his former teacher last year
Speaking at a London press conference on Tuesday to announce the contest, Kramnik admitted he was "quite scared to hear the computer can see 4 milllion moves a second. I'll be happy to do one a second". The competition, which will be broadcast on the internet, is seen as the sequel to supercomputer Deep Blue's defeat of ex-world champion Garry Kasparov in 1997 in New York. Human instinct Kramnik, 25, is Kasparov's former pupil, beating his teacher last year to take the world title.

Kramnik takes $800,000 from the match
Man and machine have taken equal honours in the eight-match Brains in Bahrain chess duel. World champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia tied 4-4 with the chess computer Deep Fritz. Kramnik won $800,000 for his part in the tournament, awarded by Bahrain's King Hamad. For his opponent, publicity for the computer manufacturer Chessbase is the most obvious benefit. Kramnik: "Totally exhausted"
Had Kramnik won, his prize money would have been $1m. But at least he exceeded the performance of his predecessor as world champion, Garry Kasparov, who in 1997 was defeated by supercomputer Deep Blue in New York. Fatigue takes over Kramnik told reporters after the match: "I'm not especially satisfied with the result even though I had more chances to win than the computer." Deep Fritz, with Black, opened with what the chess champion called a "clever choice" - a Queen's Gambit.

Braingames-World Champion Vladimir Kramnik Russia; born on 25. 06. 1975; Place of Residence:
Moscow World Ranking List Number 2: ELO 2798
Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik has reached the Chess summit. According to his own statement he is not that much concerned whether he now holds an official title of World Champion or not. Vladimir Kramnik was the first human being who could beat the best player of the last 15 years in a match. 8.5 : 6.5 was the final result of the privately organised Braingames-World Championship in London for the 25-year old Muscovite against Garri Kasparov. Nobody doubts it: at present, Kramnik is the strongest player on this globe. Vladimir began the royal game already at the tender age of 5 in a chess club in Moscow. At 11 he was already considered a master candidate and admitted to the legendary Chess School of former World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik, where Kasparov was also initiated into the secrets of chess. Subsequently, young Kramnik had already gained two World titles. He won the World Cadet Championship as well as the World Junior Championship. As early as 1992 (Manila) – only 17 years of age – he was part of the Russian Olympic team and considerably contributed to the final success of his country by scoring incredible 8.5 from possible 9 points. Since 1995 Kramnik has always been among the top 3 on the world ranking list and in 1996 - with 21 years of age - he was even number one. At present, he is number 2. Here, too, he is just about to pass Kasparov. A very special coup was pulled off by the 1.93 m tall giant in Dortmund, place of the RWE Gas AG. The "black giant" won the Chess Meeting five times: 1995 to 1998 and 2000. This incredible run of wins was stopped only once in 1999 by his rival Leko of all people. At any rate, to decide a super-tournament of such quality for oneself has the highest rarity value in the history of sports.

Draw In Last but One Game of Chess Match Between Vladimir Kramnik and Computer in Bahrain
A draw was registered on Thursday in the last but one game of the chess match between world champion Vladimir Kramnik and a computer which is being held in Bahrain. At the beginning of the game, the Russian Grandmaster had a clear edge but the computer, fitted out with the Deep Fritz programme, relaxed tension in the 24th move.

For a month the eyes of the world were focused on the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith where the two grandmasters fought out their silent duel for two million dollars in prize money and the solid silver Howard Staunton trophy crafted by Asprey and Garrard, the Queen's jewelers. It also gives full details of how anyone can enter for the forthcoming Brain Games World Championship qualifier with the ultimate goal of competing face to face against the new world chess champion. sci tech ... Chess master Kramnik ready for super-computer match October 02, 2002, 19:30 World chess champion Vladimir Kramnik says he is ready to do battle with super-computer Deep Fritz, but admitted his "monstrous" opponent has a psychological edge. "I am ready for the competition because the preparation was quite serious. It took me more than one month and now I am ready to play," said the soft-spoken 27-year-old in an interview before the match in Bahrain, which starts on Friday.
"It is a different feeling because there is a lot of psychology in chess; your (traditional) opponent has strong points and weaknesses, and here all psychological factors work against me because I am human and my opponent is not."
The long-awaited eight-game contest comes five years after then world champion Garry Kasparov lost sensationally to the computer Deep Blue in a dramatic contest between man and machine. "It is a battle between human creativity and the monstrous calculating power of the machine," Kramnik said.

CHESS/FESTIVAL OF LEON
Kramnik dethrones Anand
ARVIND AARON VLADIMIR KRAMNIK, the Russian professional World chess champion, has become the new king of Advanced Chess. Not having won any event since July 2001, Kramnik lived up to the expectations of world champions by winning a closely contested match against three-time winner Viswanathan Anand. Advanced Chess, which is an invention of Garry Kasparov, is in its fifth year and this year's event was a part of the 15th Chess Festival of Leon. Players from the Open tournament turned spectators and watched the proceedings of this match. The weekend over which the match was held was dominated by Spain's defeat at the hands of South Korea in the penalty shoot out in the soccer World Cup quarter-finals. Nevertheless, a downtrend in spectator support was evident and the once heralded novelty of Advanced Chess seems to be losing its shine. In Advanced Chess, players are allowed to officially "cheat" and use a computer. They are offered a powerful desktop computer with the latest Chess Base database programme and fitted with chess engines. Engines are the vital programmes that seemingly understand chess and suggest moves in their depth. Anand used both engines, Junior and Fritz, while Kramnik was loyal to Fritz thereby conserving his computing resources. Both programmes are former world computer champions and none of the players used the current world computer champion Shredder.
