Parents and Students Profiles in Excellence - an excerpt Few disciplines have earned India the kind of international recognition that chess has in the last decade. The credit for this goes to Viswanathan Anand, who at the age of 18, became India's first and youngest Grand Master in 1987. He has had a brilliant career and has reached the top in the world of chess.
Anand was introduced to chess by his mother when she took the eight-year old to a local chess tournament in Chennai. But it was in Manila, where Anand's father was on a transfer for one year, that his interest in chess was aroused.

Muslims in Indian Sport By K. Datta
It would be difficult to imagine the Indian sports scene without the Muslims in it, so enriching has been their contribution. It is 45 years since the subcontinent was divided, but old sports buffs refuse to accept that, or any other point of time in history, as a cut-off point. The Muslims always were part and parcel of Indian sport and continue to be so.
There is hardly a game in which they have not played a prominent part. Hockey or cricket, soccer or wrestling, athletics or racket games, Muslim participation has added flair and distinction.
No better wrestler has lived in the subcontinent than the late legendary Gama. In the 1970s Meher Din was a popular champion famous for his war cry of Ya Mere Maula, when he stepped into the akhara. What a specimen of manhood! In the track and field world Ilyas Babar Has made a name for himself as a coach after his days as an outstanding university athlete in Hyderabad. The great Sriram Singh, Olympic 800 meters finalist, is the best known of the self-effacing Babar Sahib’s many pupils. Even the more ‘exclusive’ sports like equestrianism and golf have been enriched by Muslim participation. Major G. M. Khan of the Indian army made a splendid figure on horseback as he expertly rode his way to a gold medal in the 1982 Asian Games at New Delhi. Ali Sher, a humble caddy, won the coveted Indian Open Tournament in 1991.

The Time Traveller
Gerald Abrahams and the blindfold exhibition "ABRAHAMS, Gerald (b. 15 April 1907) British amateur who in the 1930s was playing master-chess. At that period he was the most attacking player in England." (from The Encyclopedia of Chess, edited by Harry Golombek, Batsford 1977) In the summer of 1933 Gerald Abrahams had finished in third place in the British Championship, behind the famous player from the Indian sub-continent Mir Sultan Khan and Tylor, but ahead of Alexander, Sir George Thomas, Golombek and Winter. He then spent the 1933-34 academic year (or certainly part of it) in Belfast as a lecturer in law at Queen's University, Belfast. He does not seem to have engaged in much competition play while in Belfast, his only really serious game being a victory over J. J. O'Hanlon on Board 1 for Belfast in the annual challenge match against Dublin on the 24th February 1934. He did however play in a friendly match on the 21st April 1934 between Queen's University and C.I.Y.M.S, winning his own game against W. Minnis. The same evening he also gave a simultaneous exhibition, taking on 12 of the Queen's University and C.I.Y.M.S. players and beating them all. A further exhibition was promised, and on the 21st May 1934, Abrahams this time gave an exhibition of blindfold play at the Belgravia Hotel, Ulsterville Avenue, Belfast. He faced four players - P. J. McMahon, W. Minnis, A. L. Davies and S. Coulson. They were certainly a strong quartet. McMahon had finished equal first in the 1926 Irish Championship, before losing out in the play-off and had won the Williamson Shield (and with it the title of Champion of Belfast) for four successive years from 1926-29. In 1935 he won the Ulster Championship. Davies had finished third in the 1933 Ulster Championship, and subsequently was second equal in 1935 and third again in 1936, before finally gaining the title in 1944. Minnis played for Ireland in the 1939 International Team Tournament (Olympiad) in Buenos Aires and was Ulster champion in 1945. Coulson was the weakest of the quartet, but was probably at the time in the top dozen best Belfast players.

A new innovation from FIDE, the world chess federation governing body, has been the introduction of a World Youth Olympiad for under-16 players, which has just finished in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - and the final result could just be a portent of things to come. A total of 28 teams competed in the inaugural event that was dominated by China, who ran away with the gold with an impressive final score of 31/40 in the four-board competition. China, who were seeded second, finished four-points clear of the top seeded Ukrainian team - even although they had the world's youngest Grandmaster, Sergey Karjakin, playing on second board! The result bodes well for the future of China, whose stated aim is to dominate the men's game by 2010 in much the same way as they dominate the women's game today. They took the title on the back of three very powerful performances by Wang Yue (85% on board 1), Zhao Jun (80% on board two), and Zhou Weiqi (80% on board 3). Favourites Ukraine, who are another force for the future (and present!) with the likes of Ruslan Ponomariov and Karjakin being around for a good many years to come, turned in a very lacklustre performance. IM Alexander Areshchenko could only score 60% on top board, while latest chess wunderkind Karjakin, who had arrived in Kuala Lumpur hot-foot from his historic performance in Sudak (see today's game for a stunning miniature he produced there on the way to becoming the world's youngest GM), could only score 75% despite being on the on the lower board.
