Sports Articles From Rediff.com Salgaocar take full points from NFL opener by Our Correspondent December 12, 2001 Former champions Salgaocar, Goa, began their campaign in the sixth edition of the National Football League with a solitary goal victory over FC Kochin at the Nehru stadium in Fatorda, Goa, on Wednesday. The all-important goal for the 1998-99 champions, who finished sixth out of 12 teams in the last edition of the tournament, was scored by Nigerian striker Glador O'Zaire, in the 47th minute. O'Zaire latched on to a Bello Rasaq pass from the left flank and placed between the feet of Kochin goalkeeper Ali Abubakar. Salgoacar could have won by a bigger margin had they made good even half of the chances that came their way, particularly in the second session. The runners-up of the Goa professional league started off with some quick passing and pressuried the Kochin goal in the initial stages. In the 10th minute their hardworking striker Alvito D'Cunha was well-placed to score but his powerful shot sailed over the bar. The Kerala team came by their best chance in the 31st minute, but Josiah Seton's shot lacked the power to beat Salgaocar 'keeper Kalyan Chowbey.

News January 2003 Kasparov vs Deep Junior
Gary Kasparov (2847), has drawed in New York with Deep Junior (2686), one of the strongest computers nowadays, and one that has the most human play (together with Rebel and Hiarcs).
Junior uses as hardware an 8 1.6Gz CPU 'PC' with 6Gb of RAM!
The score has been 3-3. Player Total Gary Kasparov Deep Junior Bareev vs. HiarcsX In Maastrich grandmaster Bareev (2729) played HiarcsX (2679). Bareev was third this year in Wijk Aan Zee, and first last year. Hiarcs is probably the strongest computer positionally speaking. Only Rebel and Junior come close. Hiarcs runs on an Athlon 2400XP at 2.5Gz CPU with 1Gb memory. The score has been 2-2, with 4 drawn games. In all of them the human managed to get advantage, but couldn't win at the end. Player Total Bareev HiarcsX Wicjk Aan Zee In the dutch city the Corus tournament is under play. This is a very strong tournament with elite players. The tournament has an average rating of 2701, which qualifies it as category 19. Players: V. Anand (2753), E. Bareev (2729), A. Grischuk (2712), V. Ivanchuk (2699), A. Karpov (2688), V. Chess Life Online: Analysis by GM Larry Christiansen
Analysis by GM Larry Christiansen
GM Larry Christiansen , former US Champion, provides analysis and coverage of top news stories for Chess Life Online Final Summary, written July 2
Gary Kasparov soundly defeated Anatoly Karpov in the 4th game of their set in the quadruple round robin Frankfurt Classic "Giants" tournament held June 29-July 2 to clinch first place in the lavishly sponsored event. Kasparov defeated each of his three competitors, Vishy Anand, Vladimir Kramnik and Karpov in his four-game sets with them to score 7 1/2 - 4 1/2 in the g/25 minute evemt. Kasparov has now convincingly won each tournament he has played in this year. Anand and Kramnik shared 2-3rd places with scores of 6-6 while FIDE world champion Karpov trailed badly with 4 1/2-71/2. This is a major embarassment to Karpov who had hoped to regain some respect in s chess world that widely regards him as a hollow, paper champion. In the Frankfurt "Masters" event, Fritz the Computer completely dominated a seven-human one-machine field that included stars such as Vesselin Topalov, Michael Adams Alexander Morozovich and Judith Polgar. Morozovich and Russian GM Peter Swidler were the only players to defeat the dreaded metallic beast.
Posted before the last round of the Frankfurt Chess Classic
One of the most enjoyable tournaments anywhere is the Frankfurt Chess Classic held each year in late June-earlly July in Frankfurt, Germany. The event has evolved from a pure open tournament to a massive extravaganza that features a "Giants" event with the absolute best in the world, a "Masters" event with garden-variety 2700 types (and Fritz the computer) and an open with a massive contingent of high-grade GMs and dozens of IMs. The time control for all events is G/25 minutes which is an excellent control for producing both high drama and low comedy.

Rule India!
Anand's win and the superb show by youngsters
suggest the country will become a chess power By Vishal Sareen You've got to hand it to Vishwanathan Anand. He was unflappable as he dealt with the media and the fans who thronged the hall after his facile win over Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan in the World Chess Cup final held in Hyderabad on October 20. Anand, known for his humility and politeness, answered every question patiently, intelligently, and with a smile on his face. He has shown his ruthlessness only at the board.
But Anand showed he was fallible when he had that astonishing loss to Krishnan Sasikaran in the second round, his first loss to an Indian in more than a decade. "I jogged for half an hour, went to the gym so that I could get tired, but still was not able to sleep that night," Anand said.
Smiling assassin: Vishwanathan Anand talks to the media following his win in the World Chess Cup in Hyderabad
But being the true champion he was, he bounced back and fought his way to the final, albeit with a little bit of luck. He drew his last round-robin match against Hichem Hamdouch of Morocco. "It was a practical move," he said. "Trying to win could have backfired." If Sasikaran had won or drawn his last league match against Xu Jun of China, he would have advanced to the semifinal while Anand would have been on the flight back home to Chennai. But surprisingly, Sasikaran lost and it was Anand who advanced to the semifinal where he knocked out Alexey Dreev of Russia in a thrilling match.

UPDATE: Kasparov wins first World Rapid final
    Cannes, France
    - Garry Kasparov continued his campaign to keep his number one status, even if he doesn't have a world title to his name. He won Sunday's final over Evgeny Bareev, and got a bit more 'compensation' for Bareev's efforts as Vladimir Kramnik's second in last year's BGN title match.
Standings and round summaries can be found here
    UPDATE: Topalov rejoins champs
    Monte Carlo, Monaco
    - Veselin Topalov reemerged at the top of this blindfold and rapid chess extravaganza, with a sweep of ex-world champion Anatoly Karpov, a trick the pair of world champions could not match.
They did manage a steady win apiece though, which was enough to prevent Topalov from sprinting into clear first. Kramnik, Anand and Topalov lead with 11/16, two points ahead of Leko who is alone in fourth place.
