This is the story of Lenny Wilkens, a kid who fought his way up from the Brooklyn ghetto to a place in the sun, not only as a bonafide star in the National Basketball Association but also as a man. It wasn't easy but success, truly earned, seldom is. Lenny Wilkens worked diligently and unceasingly for the things he wanted: to help his widowed mother, to polish his basketball skills, to get an education. And he did it the hard way, with only one brief season of high school basketballtoo little for him to be noticed by collegiate scouts. Providence took him and, in his case, it is more than a play on words. In such a situation there had to be a divine guidance so it also is apt that he was accepted by the college of the same name. Later, as a professional basktetball player, Lenny Wilkens' performance among the giants of the game earned him honors as the most valuable player in the National Basketball Association's 1971 All-Star game. Lenny did not reach the top because of any 'breaks.' He made it because of what he is: a truly great human being, constantly, quietly and step-by-step removing the barriers in his path and never conceding to the obstacles barring the way.
