team for world championships

BEIJING Chinese basketball authorities on Tuesday dumped star center Wang Zhizhi from the national squad for next month's world championships, citing the star's supposed lack of patriotism.
In a lengthy statement on its Internet site, the China Basketball Association (CBA) slammed Wang for not returning to China for national team training following the end of his NBA season with the Dallas Mavericks.
It also cited other offenses, such as Wang's refusal to play for China at the upcoming Asian Games.
"Strategy needs to be closely tied to a high level of collective training, to represent the national team needs a high level of patriotism, these must all be at the heart, the will and the happiness of such a person," it said. "How can we let a person represent this nation if he does not see the needs of the collective training of his country and if he places his own interests above all else?," it added. "Due to Wang Zhizhi's mistaken choices, in the end he will not represent China at the World Championships."

It is a sword that can ordain basketball all-stars, myths and even legends. But for the 23-year-old Chinese giant, this process will need time. For instance, take note of the path taken by future Hall-of-Famer Hakeem Olajuwon of the Toronto Raptors, who is the first player from Nigeria to strap on sneakers in the NBA. After a successful collegiate career with the Houston Cougars, Olajuwon became the first overall pick in the NBA by the Houston Rockets. What separated Olajuwon from the rest of the centers was his unique game. He could challenge you in the post, trip your feet with a cross-over dribble, or step back to rain in 15-foot jumpers.

    Hoop Dreams, Chinese-Style
America's pro basketball teams are jumping at the prospect of signing a few of China's highly skilledand very tallplayers

    By TIM NOONAN Fukuoka
The Chinese men's national basketball team seems to have it all: height, youth, experience and, after many disappointments, a big victory with last week's win at the Asian Basketball Confederation championship in the Japanese city of Fukuoka. That gives China Asia's sole spot in the basketball competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics. But with all that under their belt, a few Chinese players may well have their eye on another prize: a shot at the National Basketball Association.
Consider this: the U.S. currently suffers a dearth of talented players taller than 2.1 m. China just happens to have a pair of world-class giants: Wang Zhizhi (2.16 m) and Yao Ming (2.29 m). Wang, in fact, was drafted by the N.B.A. The Dallas Mavericks selected him as the 36th overall pick in this year's draft. "Wang Zhizhi is ready for the N.B.A. right now," says Dale Brown, who tried unsuccessfully to recruit Wang for his Louisiana State University team. "In Asia, he is a man among boys." It isn't certain that Wang, 22, will actually become China's first export to the N.B.A., however. Mavericks assistant coach Don Nelson and team owner Ross Perot Jr. recently traveled to Beijing to try to secure Wang's services. But the Chinese player's clubthe Bayi Rockets, official team of the People's Liberation Armyrefused to release him. In China, a team has absolute hold on a player's rights. And as the dominant league power, Bayi is reluctant to give up its star. "When we drafted him we understood the challenges of getting him over to play," says Nelson, who also traveled to Fukuoka to scout the talent. "We didn't expect him to join us right away, but there is a strong possibility in the future." Wang, for his part, seems eager to test himself against the world's top competition. "I really enjoyed the game against the American Dream Team III at the 1996 Olympics," he says (the U.S. won, 133-70). But Wang isn't the kind who would leave China without permission.

    Ping-Pong Diplomacy: The Sequel
Wang Zhizhi really is a maverick, and may make his team the most popular on earth.
    FORTUNE
    Tuesday, May 22, 2001
By Bill Powell Remember Ping-Pong diplomacy? Thirty years ago a series of international table-tennis matches helped smooth the way for Richard Nixon to open diplomatic relations with China. Now, in the wake of the spy plane crash off Hainan Island, continued tension over Taiwan, and the forthcoming fights over missile defense, it may be time for some hoops diplomacy. The National Basketball Association is only too happy to oblige in the name of international harmony and big bucks. Professional basketball's popularity is surging in China, the world's most populous country. The NBA, which has long targeted Asia as a potentially huge growth market, is now reaping the benefits of its efforts to get its games televised. This year Chinese basketball fans are able to catch up to five games a week on national television. Ratings for the games aren't available, says Michael Denzel, vice president and managing director for the NBA in Asia, but there's still plenty of data to show how popular the sport has become. Ninety percent of China's young males, particularly those in major cities, report "awareness of" and "interest in" the NBA. Not even soccer, traditionally thought of as the country's favorite sport, has such high numbers.

According to the association, Wang defied discipline, lapsed in professional morals and flouted national interests by refusing to return to China and perform his duty as specified in the contract between his team and the Dallas Mavericks. The association did, however, confirm that it would give Wang the opportunity to correct his mistakes, as long as he genuinely repents and takes appropriate action immediately. Other members of the national team expressed no sympathy for Wang. They believe he deserves this punishment for flouting Chinese athletes' glorious tradition of putting the interests and honor of their nation above all else.

The success of International Players in NBA
    By Pang Cheng Wan
The NBA features 49 international players from 29 countries and territories for the 2001-02 season. With five international players on the team roster of Dallas Mavericks, the Dallas Mavericks team leads the chasing pack of NBA teams in having the most number of international players. The latest crop of international rookies are already making a name for themselves alongside burgeoning superstars such as Germany's Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas Mavericks) and Yugoslavia's Peja Stojakovic (Sacramento Kings). Notably, the only Asian player who has came to ply his trade in NBA and achieved considerable success in NBA, Wang Zhizhi, hails from the world’s most populous country, China. Wang, one of China's all-time greatest basketball players, became the first player from China to play in the NBA when he joined the Dallas Mavericks in April 2001. He was selected by the Mavericks in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft with the 36th pick. With sterling performances in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic basketball games for China, Wang captured the attention of the basketball world. In his first NBA season, he averaged 4.8 points, 1.4 rebounds in 7.6 minutes per game and scored a total of 24 points in five games. His presence in NBA serves as an fine example to many other aspiring Asian players who only dare to dream of playing in the NBA, a dream that can be fulfilled.

It would not only be RP point guard Olsen Racela who will be reliving a terrible nightmare for the rest of his life but also China’s first NBA recruit, Wang Zhizhi. There is no need for us to recall how Racela unwittingly gave South Korea the stunning victory, 69-68, in their semifinal match in the Asian Games basketball championship when he flubbed a pair of free throws in the dying seconds.
Reams and reams of articles, columns and commentaries have been written about those two free throws that got away and allowed South Lee Sang-Min a last-second 3-point shot that broke the backs of the Filipinos’ epic comeback. Racela will carry the nightmare of a victory that never was to his grave. Even now, millions of Filipinos who saw the game on TV last Oct. 12 are still talking about it.
DISLOYAL. The case of China’s 7-foot-1 giant Wang Zhizhi, 25, is a little bit different. No, he was not a member of the China basketball team that lost the Men’s basketball crown to South Korea, 102-100. But had he joined his team in the Asian Games for the sake of his fatherland the result would have been different. Instead, he chose to remain in the United States for the duration of the Asiad to train for the NBA.
