Here's what CNNSI.com dredged up from the Bay Area: the 1980 trade with Boston that brought Joe Barry Carroll; the trade of Wilt ; the Latrell Sprewell fiasco ; the trade of Nate Thurmond ; the Bernard King-for-Micheal Ray Richardson deal; and finally the

“The Chief” steadily gains respect and recognition
By Scott Ferrell, Shreveport Times Robert Parish never looked for recognition on the basketball floor. He never brought attention to himself with his style of play and he never went out seeking the media after games.
Yet, a funny thing has happened.
Parish didn't look for recognition. But now, with his playing career over, he is finding the recognition that so often eluded him.
He was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history in 1996. Five years later, the former Shreveport Woodlawn and Centenary College star has been elected to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, in his first year of eligibility, on the first ballot, by acclamation the rarest of tributes from state sportswriters. A call from the Basketball Hall of Fame is on the horizon.
“I had a guy from Boston call me who wrote a book on Parish and (Kevin) McHale and them,'' former Woodlawn coach Ken Ivy recalls. “He said, ‘Coach, you know these guys who sit around and wait on reporters and want to talk to reporters and stuff. Man, Robert will have a good game and he'll see those reporters and he's already gone.’ He's not looking for that.

Year 2001 Inductees Seven state sports heroes comprise Hall’s 2001 Induction Class Shreveport native Robert Parish , named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team, headlines the seven-member 2001 Induction Class of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, joining five-time All-Pro New Orleans Saints linebacker Sam Mills and two LSU sports heroes, retired Director of Athletics Joe Dean and football great A. J. Duhe . Also elected to the Hall of Fame were Lin Gamble , a DeSoto Parish native who starred for the USA in women’s basketball in the early 1970s, along with high school football coaching legends Charlie Brown and "Chick" Childress . The group was chosen for induction by the 27-member Louisiana Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame Selection Committee. The panel considered 123 nominees in 21 different categories for this year’s induction class. The 2001 Induction Class will swell the Hall of Fame membership to 208, an average of slightly more than four per year, since inaugural members Gaynell Tinsley Mel Ott and Tony Canzoneri were elected in 1958.

BOSTON Larry Bird's team trailed by a point at halftime when Robert Parish's "00" was raised to the ceiling, the last of the Boston Celtics' Big Three to have his number retired.
"All three of us were just saying, if we were playing, Larry wouldn't be down by one point, he'd be up," Parish said yesterday.
But they're no longer playing, although they stood together at center court dressed in suits instead of green-and-white uniforms and again heard the roars of the Boston crowd.
Bird's retirement after the 1991-92 season broke up perhaps the best frontline in NBA history. Kevin McHale, now the Minnesota Timberwolves' vice president of basketball operations, retired after the 1992-93 season. Parish stuck around for one more season before leaving Boston as a free agent.
He thanked the fans for their backing through it all.
"You have supported me when I was playing well, when I wasn't playing well," he said. "When I was with another team, you still supported me unconditionally."
Parish retired after playing sparingly last season with the Chicago Bulls and winning his fourth NBA title. He played 21 seasons and more games, 1,611, than any player in NBA history, and is the 19th Celtics player to have his number retired.

Simply put, the Chief got it done
Parish's quiet excellence won't be forgotten soon
By Howard Ulman, Associated Press writer
BOSTON Red Auerbach didn't know how good a player he was getting when he traded for Robert Parish in one of basketball's most lopsided deals.
And now, 17 years later, it's doubtful fans fully appreciate the achievements of the stoic center who shunned the spotlight throughout the longest playing career in NBA history.
Larry Bird and Kevin McHale got the publicity. Yet the three championships they won with the Boston Celtics in the 1980s might not have been possible without the 7-foot-1 Parish, the biggest part of the Big Three frontcourt.
"He was always the third man to get shots behind Larry and Kevin and he never raised a fuss," says K.C. Jones, who coached them to titles in 1984 and 1986. "I asked him about that one time and he said, 'As long as we win, it's no problem.'"
Night after night, year after year, the dependable Parish was the anchor of one of the NBA's greatest teams. He ran the pick-and-roll with precision, defended with passion, lofted unstoppable jumpers and slammed down breakaway dunks.
Now all that is in the past.

Louisiana preps birthplace of basketball greatness New Orleans
January 29, 2003 By RON BROCATO The Clarion Herald was pleased to present its list of the 100 brightest high school basketball stars to shine in New Orleans over the last century in its previous issue. We weren't quite sure what the response would be, or if there would be any at all. Well, to our surprise, the result was a clamor for a second list, raising the ante to include the 100 greatest players produced in Louisiana high schools. You gluttons. To select a list of this magnitude, the research had to be extensive. It included perusing through All-State and All-District teams from days of yore and lore to the present. Having attended Top 20 state tournaments since 1967 was invaluable, not to mention the thousands of games covered or watched over the past 36 years. THE OUTCOME was the discovery that our state's production of high school talent rivals that of most states on the Atlantic coast and New England. See for yourself. On how many teams would the great Baton Rouge High, LSU and St. Louis Hawks center Bob Pettit be placed on the second unit?

HISTORY OF THE LOUISIANA BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME The Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame is one of the major projects of the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches. The Hall of Fame was created to honor former great basketball players and coaches from Louisiana universities and colleges. The Hall of Fame is located in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. It contains plaques and mementos of persons elected to the Hall of Fame, along with other historic basketball memorabilia. Individuals are nominated to the Hall of Fame by their respective schools and are elected on an annual basis by a vote of the LABC's Board of Directors. Individuals are not eligible for election until at least five years after they have completed their collegiate careers. Charter members were elected in 1975 and inducted in 1976. They were Bob Hopkins of Grambling; Jackie Moreland of Louisiana Tech; Bob Pettit of LSU; Willis Reed of Grambling; and Cliff Wells of Tulane. Additional individuals have been inducted every year since 1976. Inducted in 1977 were Pete Maravich of LSU; Lee Prather of Northwestern; and Malcolm "Sparky" Wade of LSU.
