Playground Legends Deserve Recognition by William Jones Whitney Young According to the standards of basketball, one is not a "legend of the game" until he reaches the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the image of a player is enshrined forever. Even lately, to reach the status of superstardom, a player must have a hefty contract along with numerous amounts of endorsements from such companies as Nike or Pepsi. Unfortunately, most people who receive such credit for being a legend are only in the NBA (National Basketball Association), even though there are many more legends of the blacktop or playground. These players are so good that some have myths about them as if they were Paul Bunyan. One player of this caliber is the New York Ruckers Park legend that battled the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Connie Hawkins in the 1960s, Earl "the Goat" Manigault, the most famous of all playground legends. However, his heroin addiction cost him a professional basketball career. His domination of players at the Ruckers Park, also known as the 98th Street courts, was so well known that it became nicknamed "Goat Park." He was able to play college ball at Johnson C. Smith University, but fought with the coach about playing time and returned to the Harlem courts. Earl was jailed in 1969-70 for drug possession and again in 1977-79 for a failed robbery, but he later kicked his drug habit and worked at a neighborhood recreation and counseling center until his death due to heart failure. His life became a movie in 1996 on HBO called "Rebound."
